  1. LOVED that book! I also like Jeffrey Archer. He writes a lot of spy/conspiracy fiction stuff, but I most recently enjoyed Paths of Glory, a non-fiction telling of George Mallory's life and attempts to climb Mt. Everest. ETA: just finished Dennis Lehane's Shutter Island. The movie did not look appealing to me, so I don't know how it compares, but I was pleasantly surprised by the book. It's a little slow at times, not sure where it's going or why, but it all wraps up in the end. Suddenly, what seemed like dry details fit together into a nicely thought out picture. 3. Umm -- guess you haven't checked our weather forecast for this weekend and next week? Saturday is supposed to be good, but Sunday (esp at the DZ) will be crap. Although, as you said, we need it! See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

  5. Do they actually still punish for that or is that law basically still one the books to use in cases of both parties in the military with a rank difference? yeah, it's one of those that's still on the books but rarely used -- I've never seen it as the only charge against someone. In the cases I have seen, it's just one of those extra charges they tack on if they have you charged for some other offense -- usually sexual assault, but they could add it for a fraternization case as well. 7. The Scarlet Letter?[confused] I was a fornicator not an adulterer!! NOT YOU . . . and adultry is also premarital. From Wiki: Adultery (also called philandery) is a form of extramarital sex. It is sexual infidelity to ones spouse. It originally referred only to sex between a woman who was married and a person other than her spouse. I never banged anyone married while I was unmarried and I had no extramarital fuckery so I was only a fornicator. Hmm -- in the military "adultery" is defined as sex with a person who is not your spouse. Therefore, two single people having sex are both committing adultery. In this case, "extramarital," meaning outside of marriage, doesn't necessarily mean either participant is IN a marriage, just that the act does not take place within a marriage. (disclaimer: I'm not a military lawyer, but this is how I've heard it defined/presented in military court) See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!
  8. Currently, as far as I can tell (if someone has another example, please let me know), the military is the last major American public institution where homosexuality is still not recognized/allowed. I see it as the last place homophobes can hide out -- the argument of openly gay military service being a "social experiment" is no longer valid. I think it will be interesting to see how the straight guys start to handle people spreading rumors about their sex lives that they don't like. What? That's sexual harassment? Who knew? Professional behavior is professional behavior. No one can control your thoughts, but we live in a society where your ACTIONS are judged. Personally, I don't care if the men I work with have images of me running naked through their minds, as long as I'm treated with respect and afforded the same opportunities to succeed or fail on my own merit. Keep those thoughts to yourself. Is that really too much to ask? edited for clarity See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

  12. That new MRS one that was added is kinda creepy! I get that the father of the bride is leaning in to kiss his daughter's cheek, but still... the more I look at it, the creepier it gets. Nice try, though. Besides, you can't even see the cup in the photo! Anyway, you got another vote from me. Two more weeks to go! 14. Their 15.3 average at collegiates wasn't an indication? Did they think they were going to get worse at nationals after more training? :-) I'm not hating, the kids did a great job, scored the most points, and deserved to win. But to suggest they didn't know they were capable of a 15 point average and that a 13.1 last year won by a pretty large margin is wrong. They knew. Did you see VTSD last year? Yeah, and they moved up to Advanced this year (and won) as Carolina Turbo XP. Smoked the field. Again. Nice job! See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!
  15. Ah, well if that's the way you're looking at it, I say fuck the Saudi way of life. I don't give a toss if it's "their culture" or "their tradition" - it is unjustifiable to impose those restrictions on people who have not chosen them and do not want them. The interesting point in the article IS that the government is trying to keep the religious zealots at bay. The royal family would like to modernize (for example, they sent the young equestrian to the competition), but the social influence of the hardliner religious clerics is incredibly strong, and the resulting point of view in the community at large has been solidified over generations. The edict to confine fatwa legitimacy to a select group of clerics is the govt's way of a compromise -- don't write off the clerics entirely, but agree on whose opinions will be endorsed by the country (eg government). Consider in the US during an election year. We don't require our elected leaders to demonstrate religious participation, but as a society at large, it's big news when a candidate either does not attend church at all, practices a different form than everyone else before (eg Kennedy), or practices a different religion entirely than those before him/her. The rumors about Obama during his candidacy are recounted as "accusations" of being Muslim, as if it would have been a crime! The societal influence of religious leaders (everywhere) is strong, but I know of nowhere is it stronger than SA. If not, this story wouldn't even have been news. At least in the US, groups like the WBC can't send out their own religious police to enforce their point of view. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

  18. I did a lot of "greets" for my team's tandem students, and I would hear that a lot from the earlier students (I experienced it early on as well). The advice I gave after those first few is the same as if you've had the wind knocked out of you: if you're having trouble breathing in, force a breath out. Every single person has come back to tell me that technique worked for them (as it did for me). Not sure if it's an anxiety thing, or you're not used to that force of wind (or a combination of both?), but for some reason, that technique seems to counter it. 19. Express their needs while also respecting their husband's choices. Resist the temptation to criticize, belittle or dismiss their husbands. Trust their husbands . . . Sounds like how we roll. That's how I try to treat her. Marriage is a partnership, not a contest.

  21. "But as the couple got closer to their wedding day, she took out all the paperwork and it became clear that her total debt was actually about $170,000. “He accused me of lying,” said Ms. Eastman, 31, a San Francisco X-ray technician and part-time photographer who had run up much of the balance studying for a bachelor’s degree in photography." The article is a bit fuzzy - it appears he postponed the marriage, rather than breaking up with her. More crappy writing in journalism. No, photography school girl got dumped. Medical school girl still engaged, fiance fine with probable debt (doc in training not finished, debt COULD go to $250K). Article didn't say how much she owes right now. Article writer also slams the one who got dumped (who didn't really know her balance). See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

Nav 240 (exit weight approx. 175). Yep, student jump. I was supposed to try front riser turns under canopy. I did "try," but wasn't very successful! I did much better under the 220 I jumped after that. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

  25. Two things that occurred to me as I took that walk down memory lane: 1 -- Ethnicity didn't matter. Anyone could be a disco star. 2 -- Guys still liked to go out to dance, AND knew how to dance with a partner. So yeah, there are worse things that could be revived!
