  1. No, I meant the velcro on the risers that the toggles attach to. The hook bit. On the riser.
  2. A rig(a Javelin NJ made in Jan/2001) was brought to me the reserve of which I was supposed to repack. The owner had disassembled the rig himself so he could wash it. He had taken the rig to a dry cleaners', as recommended by the manufacturer. Unfortunately the owner didn't think to cover the exposed hook velcro on the toggles, and he also left some of the hook velcro on the toggle covers exposed. The result: lots of velcro damage on the reserve risers. Photos can be found here: http://www.geocities.com/ernokaikkonen/velcro_damage/ The damage may not be severe enough to warrant replacement of the risers, but I'm not going to re-certify the rig until I know for sure. I've sent email to Sun Path asking for their opinion. What do the riggers out there think? Edited by slotperfect to make the link clicky
  3. Hi Tonto I've noticed that if you have your Mirage packed so that the reserve container gets wrinkled(and then let it sit for 6 months), it's next to impossible to get rid of the wrinkles on the next repack as they've been set into the fabric. So you may be out of luck. Does anyone know if you can iron cordura?(semi-)
  4. I managed to get hold of a digital camera, so here's a picture of one of my risers.
  5. I bought a brand new set of Aerodyne Miniforce risers a couple of months ago, but didn't get a chance to install them until now. I was inspecting the risers when the bendix housing slipped out! All I had to do was apply a small amount of force(less than, say, a descending slider would!) on the top end of the housing, and the bottom end of the housing just came out of the pocket. The only thing holding the bendix housing inside the pocket was three wraps of "Super tack", sewn through the riser and the pocket, and around the groove at the end of the housing(see left picture in the attachment). It looks like the tacking just wasn't tight enough. Also, there was nothing to keep the housing from slipping upwards. I'm probably going to have the risers modified to resemble other brands of "armored risers", with diagonal stitching keeping the housing inside the pocket(see right picture in attachment). I've notified Aerodyne of this.
  6. I'm using Garmin's Geko301. It's smaller(less than half the weight) and slightly cheaper than the eTrex Vista, while it still has a barometric altimeter in it. If you don't need the maps the Geko301 would be worth considering.
  7. Bump. Does anyone know if there's an updated version of the list somewhere available?
  8. Don't take my word for it but I thought NMEA was a real-time protocol.
  9. Hi K2... 1) It's mentioned in this thread that RWS does not recommend hanging Vector3s. 2) Packing the reserve right is crucially important. If it's not packed right, the covers wont stay closed. Period. 3) "Training" the covers just means trying to change the "set" on the plastic bits inside the covers. It can make a difference, if the reserve was badly packed before, and is packed well now. What have you been up to?
  10. Replace the bottom tab on a Pdf-toggle with a trulok pin? You will end up with a toggle with two metal pins on it, so if you're afraid of getting home-made piercings on landing this might not be the best solution for you.
  11. "Whenever someone invents a fool proof system, someone else comes up with a better fool." That said, I think the PdF system is the most secure non-velcro system I've seen. There's actually very little bulk in the toggles. They're not made of type IV like most toggles, but of a thinner and narrower material.
  12. I think a modern canopy would glide at about 2:1 or 3:1. Theoretically, you should be able to get a better ratio in a wingsuit, since you're "all wing", without the parasitic drag of the lines or the jumper hanging under. A recording GPS unit with an altimeter is one way to measure it.
  13. Here is one. Entanglement with the main, cut-away, RSL fires the reserve pilot chute into the mess, reserve never leaves the freebag. I'm sure there are others.
  14. Any chance of getting a separate user interface to the forums to use with PDA's and "smartphones" and such? Like a _very_ stripped down version, with only the essentials in as small a file as possible. Something that would look nice on Opera's "small screen rendering" mode. Maybe just as a premier service?
  15. I found the article on rec.skydiving that you mentioned. However, that didn't shed any light on the one thing I've always wondered about the stunt; Would you care to elaborate on the cut-away/reserve modifications? Some kind of extension on the handles?
  16. And Dwain Weston, October 7, 2003. I'm sure landing on a bridge railing counts in your book. And the "guy with lines wrapped around his feet ", from skydivingfatalities.info.
  17. >Hows about canopy and birdman flyers doing 'canopy' RW...... No dock on this video including Luigi and Jeb doing canopy/WS-RW, but it gives you an idea of what can be done...
  18. 1) Latitude/Longitude in decimal degrees (eg. -65.76978 +45.90890) 60.744722 24.141111 2) ICAO code (this is your international airport identifier) EFRY 3) DZ Name Hämeen Laskuvarjourheilijat 4) Country Finland 5) Airport name Räyskälän lentokenttä / Räyskälä airfield
  19. I know it's not the same unit but: With my Garmin Geko301 I get perfect reception inside a Caravan if I'm sitting on the co-pilot's seat. That has been consistent. Today, I tried sitting on the floor behind the pilot and couldn't get a satellite lock. I didn't get a recording of the first 6000ft of the flight, then the unit found enough satellites, and worked perfectly after that. Mine is on an altimeter pillow on my chest-strap. I thought I might have trouble with reception since my body is blocking the view to the satellites, but no; it's been working just fine.
  20. Perhaps being able to see contrasting thread when doing inspections? Or being able to use the same coloured fabric as the original to make a patch? Also aren't some webbings identified by the coloured thread running on the side/center of the webbing?
  21. Pro-Tracks are most widely used. Neptunes should work too, I guess. I'm planning on trying out my Garmin Geko310 GPS unit as soon as we get some jumpable weather here.
  22. I just read an old BPA magazine that had a link to the same site (http://www.digitaldog.co.nz/wingsuit.html). According to the article: "If everything goes according to plan, Chuck will attempt his project in winter 2002". Now, on the website, it says "If everything goes according to plan, Chuck will attempt his wingsuit-to-snow project in Winter 2004." Well, I'm not holding my breath.
  23. Can't help with the actual volume, but I had a Vector2-v5 myself. It fits a 200sqft F111 main easily(Maverick), and a 220sqft F111 main(Fury) just a bit tight.
  24. Well, it's not working for me either. Opera 7.51, Windows98SE. If use the setting "identify as MSIE6", it works right. If I properly identify myself as Opera, it looks like the attachment. It's been like that for ages BTW. I just don't need the nav-bar that much since I bookmark directly to the forums.
