  1. I watched yesterday and almost couldn't sleep after that... a millisecond more for the chute to open and he'd have a serious hit... A friend of mine told me that one of them died last month in one of the stunts... somehow I wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be true. 2. The ones here in San Diego only let whoever if whoever owns a gun. The buddy rule is valid only if you are renting.
  3. That reminds me of another stupidity (incurring the risk of hijacking my own thread)... I like to shoot handguns, but I don't want the burden of owning one, so I go to the range and rent one... It happens that if you are renting a gun, you can only use the range if you have a buddy with you... they said it's less likely you will rent the gun to commit suicide if you have someone in the lane with you... go figure... There are almost infinite ways to commit suicide...
  4. Hahaha! I forgot about that! Such a nonsense! AND... the assumption is that a skydiving school or DZ would log each and every jump, including deployment altitude.... IN ONE WHITE BOARD!
  5. I don't know if it's from last week or the week before since I DVR'rd it and only watched it yesterday... but somewhere in the plot, the suspect, the adrenaline junkie, works at Skydive Perris... When the two police inspectors say "we have to pay this guy a visit", I thought there would be some skydiving action. When they get to "Perris", it is only a generic hangar at some airport. They arrive at the exact time when the suspect is going to suicide from jumping the airplane. The inspectors came to this conclusion because when searching through his stuff, they found the main canopy in his duffel bag (wtf!?!?).... They run after the guy, and he is on the runway bound to board the airplane.. with an empty rig... no reserve and no main... how stupid is that? I understand that 90% of the population won't even pay attention to that... but it would be sooooo easy to plot something a little bit more convincing, and without spending more on production... just call someone that actually skydives! bla Una volta che avrete imparato a Volare, camminerete sulla terra guardando il cielo perchè è là che siete stati ed è là che vorrete tornare.
  6. Ok, got it last week and had the opportunity to test it during the Elsinore 2-way scrambles last saturday. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J93mzy7gXQ And here are my impressions: Overall: Loved it! I mounted the camera on my fullface RW helmet with one of the curvy double tape mounts that comes in the kit. I'm satisfied with the variety of mounts the kit offers. It is also nice to know that you can purchase the other kits from the manufacturer (I plan on buying the suction mount for my motorcycle and to stick it to the wing of the airplane to film some exits). You can't even feel there's something there, so light it is. Operation is pretty simple and straight forward. I liked the image quality and the colors and contrast. The wide angle is perfect for AFF instructors and coaches. I've heard a rumor in Elsinore that Perris bought a couple for wrist mount on tandems that don't want a full video treatment. Opening the waterproof case after a jump is difficult, I think because of some pressure buildup or something like it. 7. Ok, just placed an order. Let's see how it goes.
  8. Backgrounder: I have a tad over 1300 jumps. Started jumping the sabre 150 with 36 jumps; moved to a batwing 134 with 87 jumps and then to a stiletto 120 with 382 jumps. I've been jumping the stiletto for almost 1000 jumps with wing loading around 1.7 (1.6 is the most recent). This weekend I've done my first 4 jumps with the velocity 111 loaded at 1.8 and I absolutely had a blast... so here's my account before I forget it. First jump I deployed around 7000 to play with the canopy. I feel a much smoother opening than the stiletto, but the velocity doesn't stay on heading, it goes left and right, but in a smooth fashion. I liked it. Then I played with the brakes and I notice that it has more range than the stiletto. Did a front riser 180 and then I experimented what everybody was saying that it doesn't recover from dives... it really doesn't!! It stays going down until you make an input on the brakes. For landing I decided to do what I'm used to do: a 90 degrees left turn using front riser. At the altitude I turned, with the stiletto I'd need to hang on both risers until it was almost time to flare.. with the velocity it wasn't needed. It got me a nice swoop... and the best thing (windless conditions) is that at the end of the swoop I pulled the brakes even more and the canopy took off... The stiletto wouldn't lift under these conditions and I'd probably kill it. Second jump: I'm getting used with the pull out, so my body position wasn't perfect and I didn't throw the pilot chute far enough to be fully inflated... it took a bit longer to start pulling the bag and it opened with a 180 twist. With the stiletto experience, I was already prepared for the worse, but the velocity smoothly untwisted itself... that was nice. Third jump: nothing new Forth jump: hop n' pop from 3000. I had bad experiences with exit and pull, but again, the opening was very smooth this time as well. Since there was absolutely no traffic around, I tried a bit more than 90 and used the two front risers to align for landing. Speed was considerable faster, but with the smoother recovery arch, it didn't feel rushed. I was amazed at how long the swoop was in comparison with the stiletto. I felt the canopy responsive at all times. Since I'm in a very privileged location (san diego, close to perris and elsinore) and there are so many good canopy instructors around, I'll probably take a canopy flight course to start extracting more juice from it in a safe manner. 9. He tried to buy my canopy. I was about to report him here when I saw this.
  10. I had shoulder dislocation on a reserve landing... as per my friend advice (who also had the same thing happened to him), I went to a doctor specialized in sports. No surgery needed, and just with PT and building lots of muscle around that joint and I was back in the air after 6-9 months. It's better to wait a bit more than risk dislocating the thing once more, which makes things even worse. 11. It should be out pretty soon I guess. I know that the main RW events this year are already defined right? Valentine's Meet: feb14 in Arizona Shamrock Showdown: mar20 in DeLand Nationals: oct12 in Spaceland Texas But I agree... it would be nice to know the local competition agenda as soon as possible Una volta che avrete imparato a Volare, camminerete sulla terra guardando il cielo perchè è là che siete stati ed è là che vorrete tornare.

  13. Especially if it is autonomous. I'm developing an autonomous RC helicopter and it is very hard to get autonomous certification from FAA. (I heard even NASA got denied at some point). The exception (which I'm under) is if you fly on a military controlled airspace. (obviously with the military consent) Una volta che avrete imparato a Volare, camminerete sulla terra guardando il cielo perchè è là che siete stati ed è là che vorrete tornare.
  14. I'll be there Sunday! Woot!
  15. What he said... I don't know where you left off, but I returned from an 8 year hiatus. It took me a few jumps to get back where I was (free fall skills), but a couple of months to start getting the swooping skills I had before. So I'd say... canopy wise... be very conservative. 16. Very cool! I guess I was the second guy to own a Batwing in Brazil, back in 1996. At that time I was struggling with bagging the new z-po canopy and I my rigger recommended the psycho pack. And then that's how I pack ever since. Now... I'll have to print this thread and scrapbook it to my logbook - it's not everyday you're called a "dude" by George Galloway Thanks everybody for the reply's. I guess I can psycho-pack my velocity with confidence now.... feel free to hijack the thread as you wish now.
  17. hey dude, I wasn't the one who named it. I just want to know if anybody has already used it in a velo and what's the verdict. Just please don't hijack my thread. If you want to discuss what is psycho pack or if it's good or not, please refer to the appropriate thread. 18. I just upgraded from a stiletto 120 to a velocity 111. Haven't mounted the velo yet. The thing is that for the last 1000 jumps, I've been psycho packing the stiletto (my first "high performance" canopy was a batwing 134) and I've never had problems doing it. The question is: anybody out there psycho packing their velos?
  19. Anytime! I'll be in Skydive San Diego this saturday.
  20. Good to hear that Al! If I remember correctly, you and me [re]started approximately at the same time... the only difference my hiatus was a bit longer (8 years), and another coincidence is that I was able to complete another kind of 300: 1300. Hey, take a look at Perris schedule. They're having a tunnel competition on Dec. 27 that will be pretty cool. I'm going! 23. I was wondering... What is necessary or when will I be able to train my daughter by myself? I used to be a BBF coach, but my tunnel experience is still limited. 24. Humnn... thinking about that, that's right. When I fly half brakes I guess it's even deeper than hands on chest...
  25. So do you release the brakes to loosen the chest strap or you keep'em in your hands? I was thinking that depending on the canopy (high wing load) and time you spend loosening the chest strap, you could stall the canopy right?
