  1. PVD is not like anodizing. While anodizing will add around 2 microns, decorative PVD won't add another 300 nanometers. The tolerances of the parachute metal parts are at least one order of magnitude larger than that.

  2. The only way would be to get ahold of the parts before the manufacturer assemblies it or get a rigger to undo the webbing. You can't put fabric on the PVD chamber.

Now, reading the other posts here I started thinking about TSO. Would a change like that require a new TSO approval?

  3. PVD (Physical vapor deposition) is a metal coating technique used in the watch and tool industries. It doesn't change the structural capabilities of the material except its color, friction (it reduces) and wear (improves).

Question is, if I apply PVD to the metal parts of my rig, will I have problems when I send it out for packing? Will riggers refuse to do it? Do I need approval from the factory?

  4. I'm wondering here, in the land of layers, what is the liability of skydiving altimeter manufacturers if:
    1. The altimeter stops working during a jump
    2. (1.) happens and there is an accident with injury or death.

Can someone claim it was the manufacturer's fault? I guess everyone can claim anything, but any chance this would get any traction in court?

  5. Wow, that's some serious misinformation. 4Hz GPS modules (not .1 seconds, but .25) were pretty common (and reasonably cheap) 10 years ago. I've designed many devices using those chips.

I'm curious, how "atomic clock" and 1Hz are tied together in your world?

enable a audible with GPS, taking readings at incriments of say .1 sec

That is technically impossible. GPS is based on signals sent to the device at exactly 1 sec increments. Think atomic clock measurements. That is how the device works.

  6. They used to. I've participated in several military sponsored events using Bandeirantes, Buffalo and C-130's. People started taking advantage of it (charging for free jumps) and they cut it out.

  8. I have once heard from one of the top 10 RW'ers in the world... buy a pilates ball and stretch your back every day... it's the cheapest free fall range tool you can buy.

How can it be a Brazilian record if it was done in Arizona?

    Sparky

Rules don't specify where it should be done. It's the same as the brazilian ski nationals... not done in brazil as well

  10. Hey Team mate

You were always a cranky son of a bitch, but you were always real, authentic.

Honored to have shared the skies with you bro. Rest in peace.

  11. In some countries (including mine), the military forces let civilians jump from their AC. I've jumped from military Bandeirante (20 people side door), Buffalo (40 people ramp) and C-130 (need no explanation).

I heard there's a boogie going on on Uruguay with one or more Hercules AC

  12. I've known Bonnie for a bit longer than 2 years. I jump at Skydive San Diego. I've personally did business with her and I see the attention she and all her staff gives to all (no exception) customers.

Her prices are comparable to other bigger stores (sometimes you can even get a much better deal), but her customer service is definitely the reason I've elected GG my main shop.

  14. I don't care about the hunting, the problem is that more often than not, the hunting ends in a twist. All of them so far I've been able to undo because they didn't start spinning, but I'm not really comfortable under a canopy that I cannot steer, especially after opening.

  15. Ok, very good responses...

    - first, where can I find the stock dimensions for the slider? I'll compare with mine. I was jumping a velo 111 before this one, but it wasn't as bad as the 96. I bought this 96 used and I have less than 30 jumps on it and one cutaway already. The previous owner said the canopy had some patches done by PD the last time it was relined... so I don't know if they changed the slider.

    - Ian's openings are really nice. I don't think I had one like that yet on my 96.

    - looking at Ian's video, I didn't see him trying to drive the opening a lot... which you can see I am...

    - when I pack the slider I tend to balance it and make the material symmetrical in front and behind the nose... I think I'll try to uncover the nose a bit more.

    Thanks for all comments!

  16. I beg to claim a different point of view. The current USPA regulations already limit the number of "experienced" skydivers (those who've already competed in open before) to 1/4th the size of the team.

So you can only have one player-coach in a 4-way team or 2 in 8-way and so on.

I see nothing wrong with that.

Player-coach is an awesome tool for inexperienced guys to learn faster. Not only because at least one guy in the team is a solid reference point, but also because the coach now has a lot more feedback. He can even give live feedback with one way radio during the skydive.

This weekend I've jumped my velo 96 after a cutaway I had a few weeks ago. I was complaining about the unpredictable hunting openings of the velo to this friend of mine and he offered me to fly his xaos 88.

So here's my impression: MY velo opens slower and keeps hunting for a long time. His xaos opens faster with just a little bit of hunting.

Now one jump is not near enough to indicate any results, but for the more experienced on both... are these typical behaviors of these two canopies?

My malfunction I believe was caused by a toggle fire, because the whole thing was twisted as soon as looked up, but I've been having a considerable number of twists after it opens and is hunting left and right. Good thing is that those kind of twists so far have been pretty tame and don't start spinning, so I've been able to undo them.
