  1. Remember the "Good Old Days" when we could pack without weights? Seriously, don't lie down on the canopy, it can tend to make it slip. Press the air out with your forearms while mummying the canopy to the proper width. A small amount of slack in the lines isn't a problem. Just pull them tight before stowing the lines. And if you pull the container towards you when folding the canopy for the bag it helps to re tension the lines, even if you don't drag the rig while stowing the lines. 3. Yes rubber bands were designed to break for a very good reason. I wouldn't consider John Sherman from Jumpshack to be either ignorant or uneducated considering he is certainly closing in on 40 years in the sport, and has made innumerable rigs over the years. He recommends the use of Mil Spec rubber bands. And has gone so far as to develop (test/certify/) a reserve freebag that uses Mil Spec rubber bands only. Read his article on the JumpShack web site. Before we toss around "inbred" "ignorant" "uneducated" perhaps we should consider the opinions of those who are responsible for the development of modern parachute equipment and have actually tested their inbred, ignorant, uneducated opinions. A reason to get rubber bands over Tube Stoes IS the lower cost. You will replace a "questionable" rubber band without a thought, but will use Tube Stoes long past the point of serviceability just because they are expensive by comparison. My opinions are formed over 25+ years in the sport and 20+ years as a certificated rigger. blue skies I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  4. Maybe I'm getting old, but isn't weighing down your container while you pack a job for your girlfriend? Thats the reason I take mine to the DZ. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  5. QUESTIONS are never premature. DECISIONS can be premature. You're just trying to get as much information about a new and exciting sport. Take the answers you're getting, factor them into your learning curve and make the appropriate decision when you have the experience necessary. And never forget to use your local resources. Your instructors, jumpmasters, riggers. Blue Sky gene I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  6. If ya don't know what super tack is ya might just want to consult your local rigger. Any time you modify your rig you can increase the potential for an unanticipated problem. Quote I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  7. While some "young" children may be able to pack correctly and safely, do they have the emotional maturity to handle a fatality? How do you explain to a 12 or 13 year old that they aren't responsible if a jumper (they packed for) malfunctions, and, for whatever reason, doesn't initiate correct procedures to save their own life? I've seen adults have a awful time handling skydiving fatalities, is it reasonable to put a child in the mix? I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  8. I seem to remember a photo of a wedding dress made from a canopy with the data panal in the front of the dress. Believe that I saw it at DeWolfs loft. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  9. Excaliber 190 brand new, had a built in left turn that never could be corrected and opened almost as hard as my Nimbus XL which was the other bad canopy I've flown. Had to put a taffetta domed slider on the XL to make it open a little softer. Had an annoying tendency to helicopter and twist the lines if you pulled down the toggles too hard. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  10. As a jumper and a police motorcycle officer just tell him that at least skydiving gives you a second chance to survive when things go wrong. Main and reserve, if something goes wrong when he is riding at 150+ he has no backup. There isn't anything he can do until gravity is done with him. The idea that skydiving is the only high performance sport that gives you two chances is one that I have used effectively to shut down the type of person who wants to make it seem as if we are one second away from death everytime we jump. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  11. I thought it was the 5 P's: pain, pallor, paresthesia, paralysis, and pulselessness. Used to teach this in my JM and I courses as part of the first aid section.
  12. Does anyone have any information on memorial services or funeral arrangments yet? I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  13. Agree that you were thinking clearly, altitude aware, and cutaway at an appropriate atlitude, well about the minimums. The ONLY things that gives me minor pause was your statement that you had "tonnes of time" and you holding down the toggle whilst you cutaway. We never have tonnes of time, and I don't want to hold onto anything connected with a canopy that I intend to cutaway, too much potential for a problem in my opinon. Otherwise good job, I assume someone has explained the beer rules? blue skies I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  14. Does anyone have the list of names? A PM would be appreciated. I heard that the toll is now 6. May their flight now be one of eternal peace and beauty. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  15. I've seen people scrape off pepper foam and throw it back at the sprayer. One of the reasons that I don't use it. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  16. I have a 12 year old who shoots quite well. The nature of firearms is such that raw physical strength isn't needed, which makes a 12 year old just as deadly as anyone else. The first rule of law enforcment is "go home at the end of your shift" I have the right to defend myself, and others. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  17. Doesn't the Icon container have one attached? I use one at work, (traffic cop), but I think it's too small for high speed, high stress situations. Too difficult to maneuver in that circumstance. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  18. Are we also going to ban black paint to keep criminals from painting toys to look real? I have been in law enforcement for over 27 years, point something that looks like a gun at me and I will respond just like every other police officer would: Fire until the threat is over. I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  19. This came up many years ago, when the PIA held riggers conferences at the Nationals at Muskogee OK during the nationals. The most popular answer then was make them pay for every repack they had addded to their card. Was wondering if attitudes had changed in the past 20ish years? 20. "Shrimping" is the act of licking or sucking your partners toes for sexual pleasure. Not quite as bad as you thought? I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  21. Got hit on my Police Harley, sustained a left leg mid shaft Tib/Fib. Have a TI "nail" inside the fib secured with 4 screws. Accident was on May 7th. It's now 5 months later, I've been released to duty. Running is still a bit painful, but the doctor says the bone is healed. Is there anyone who is jumping with an internally fixed leg like this? How about opinions as to having the "nail" taken out of the bone in about a year? Any help would be appreciated. benny I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  22. Met Dave at his riggers course, and began teaching for him the next year, did you know that he writes down the punch lines to jokes so he can remember them? My favorite Dave joke was heard after beer 30 at his loft. He heard two jokes in quick succession: "I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous" and "I'm an atheist, Thank God" He bounded up the stairs and said to all and sundry in the kitchen: "i'D GIVE MY RIGHT ARM TO BE AN ATHEIST!!!" We sent him back downstairs. If you get the chance, ask Dapper Dave to tell you the MOM joke. The only joke I know that made him fall down on the floor laughing, (in a resturant). Ask him about Heavy Drop Helen the drop test dummy. And also ask him about the reaction a Static LIne Jumpmaster had to his left hand throwout after his shoulder injury. 23. If you get the chance, ask Dave to tell you the story about jumping in FL with his left hand pull and how a "young" jumpmaster reacted to his freefall and pull. Great story I live with fear and terror, but sometimes I leave her and go skydiving.
  24. Yep, I was in Moberly as well for the Heron, even bought a T Shirt with the aircraft on it. Climbed slower that a DC3 and needed a copilot because it was a 4 engine ac. Door was really small, and to get full altitude they put out a 4 way at about 7500. Came from Lexington MO to jump it. I remember that they tried to get a student out of the door and he refused to go. Held on to the door frame and no one could move him.
