By level 3, a student should be able pull their own reserve if they can't find the main handle, and they should know what to do if an instructor isn't there at pull time.

Shit happens, I signed the waiver, it's on me to save my own life.

By Level 1 / Cat-A they should too!  Eh?  ;-)
All a part of the very FJC EP's training (or should be!)

...because if shits already coming out, makes more sense in my mind for the main side to follow through.

Why? - Please explain to me how in your mind, and where exactly - you'd envision this supposed advantage the main-side would have in being there, riding-out, versus the reserve-side.

  3. It only needs to be sufficient measurement (as you said) to make sure the one side does not release egregiously before the other. How much "difference" are you looking for / expecting / wanting to see?

The correct way to tell, is not by trying to judge a total net measurement difference of the cables, and looking for some certain pre-set "offset", once they are removed from the rig - - - as from rig-to-rig, that net measurement difference can vary widely. Instead, what you want to do, is when you've re-assemble the rig - do a slow-pull of the cutaway, and observe effectively when each cable end, clears the retaining-loop on each side. Optimal result and "answer" you are looking for would be probably more closer to near SIMULTANEOUS than offset on either side, by too terribly much, actually.

  4. MEL gets his sh*t right!! There really is no other way to say it than that. :P

I personally own one of those "rare - tweener" crossfires. Not labeled a Crossfire-2, but not exactly a Crossfire-1 either. Checking the serial # of it on Icarus' own website, then reaching out to them - I got the sense there was real confusion over exactly which lineset to ship. So - I reached out to MEL. "...No problem Grant - get me the canopy, and I'll take full care of ya".

Turns out my canopy is one of the one's made in Spain, right smack in the middle of the transition.

1 vectran new lineset, expertly installed - and the trim is absolutely PERFECT!! 1st thing I noticed when getting the canopy back was that the brakelknes were tacked. Oh no, I thiught to myself... gonna be a pain to adjust - I've *ALWAYS* had to adjust, with factory delivered linesets. But not MEL's! ...Again - - ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!

My baby's now good to go, for another 800 or so jumps, and I couldn't be happier.

You won't go wrong, when it comes to linesets, if you choose MEL.

  5. Maybe you'll get no real-world operational feedback, because there is none? And maybe too... there is a reason for that? ;)

You almost sound like the 100-jump wonder with this... fishing around for that one illusive "answer" - which is only the one - that he really only wanted to hear. :P

Call for Outreach to Congressman Polis

    Dear CQS Supporters:

    1. Please see my letter to Congressman Polis below. You can help by writing a brief note to him also, including the following key points.
    a. Identify yourself as a supporter of Citizens for Quiet Skies
    b. Aviation noise is a growing problem and we need his help to find solutions
    c. Encourage him to join the Quiet Skies congressional caucus
    d. Encourage him to meet with CQS to explore solutions to the noise problem

    Send email to: [email protected]
    ***********************************************
    Dear Congressman Polis,

On behalf of Citizens For Quiet Skies, I am writing to ask for your help to reduce excessive aviation noise in our community.

Communities across Colorado and beyond are facing serious impacts created by aviation activities. Currently, there is no local authority able to adequately address this problem. For example, during the past several years Boulder County residents have been subjected to increasing noise from skydiving operations originating at Vance Brand Airport in Longmont. Skydiving operations are distinct from other general aviation traffic and they create a significant noise burden on the local community. While other planes take off and go somewhere, the jump planes remain within a designated "flight box" over our homes for the entire duration of their flights. Each flight climbs steeply and noisily to jump altitude, gaining 13,000 vertical feet of altitude in about 10 minutes. They operate multiple jump planes concurrently, with peak activity on the weekends. And finally, they operate for more than 12 hours per day, creating nearly constant airplane noise.

Skydiving operations are significantly degrading the quality of life in Boulder County - something must be done.

To date, we have pleaded with the city of Longmont, the owner and operator of the airport. We also conducted a lengthy lawsuit against the skydiving operator. These efforts have been unsuccessful, in large part due to the FAA's presumed authority over all aviation noise regulations. Therefore, we find it necessary to seek relief at the federal level.

Congress is currently working on the FAA Reauthorization bill, which is expected to be finalized later this summer or early fall. I am requesting your support to include the following provisions in that proposed legislation:

    1. Grant explicit authority to the airport operator to adopt reasonable regulations to reduce aviation noise impacts to the community. Examples of reasonable regulations would include limiting the number of operations, limiting the hours of operations and banning certain aircraft based on noise characteristics. The FAA grant assurances presumably allow the airport proprietor to adopt "reasonable regulations" to reduce aviation noise. However, in practice the FAA deems ALL such regulations to be "unreasonable." The FAA has shown no interest in reducing aviation noise at general aviation airports and we find no evidence of noise-based regulations that the FAA has actually approved. In fact, tasking the FAA with the authority for noise regulations is contradictory to their primary mandate of promoting aviation interests.

    2. Require a thorough environmental impact study and local approval for specific aviation activities that create an undue burden on the local community. Two examples of these activities include a.) designation of a "flight box" for aviation activities, which is a geographic area in which aviation activities such as skydiving or stunt maneuvers are conducted, and b.) use of airport property for a Parachute Landing Area (PLA), also called a "drop zone," where parachutists land. The PLA should be granted under the land use policies of the local government, and they should have the explicit authority to deny access to airport property for use as a PLA.

Additionally, we would like to encourage you to join the "Quiet Skies" congressional caucus, which was recently formed in response to the ongoing and oftentimes blatant abuse of citizens' rights with respect to aviation impacts. Other members include Henry Waxman, Adam Schiff and Anna Eshoo, all of California, Mike Quigley (Ill.), Alan Grayson (Fla.), Keith Ellison (Minn.), Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), Mike Capuano (Mass.) and Katherine Clark (Mass.)). With your support, we can move forward with meaningful amendments to the FAA reauthorization bill that will significantly improve the quality of life for ordinary citizens.

Thank you for your consideration of this important issue. I would like to meet with you at your convenience to discuss the situation further. Please let me know what works best for you in the next few weeks.

  7. So... Maybe I've just missed it in all the "din" ) But...

Has anyone ever, clearly determined specifically why Ms. Gibbs apparently has such a hard-on for MH in particular, ans skydiving in general?

I mean seriously - she has now gone well out of her way, making HERSELF miserable over all this. The truly sad part is how she has in her own (whatever it is... delusions?) now also effected, and COST others. Didn't I read something somewhere - maybe it was long ago, and not completely related... but that she may have had either some involvement (romantic or otherwise) with Skydiving in her previous home / earlier life in FL ...That also ended there upon her relocation near MH, in some sort of (unrelated - but now maybe actually causal to all this in the 1st place) conflict?

Has any of that ever been further looked into, substantiated (or not) - or brought out?

    Let's be honest.
The 45 rule came into being back in the S/L days when someone realized that most skydivers can't count past 6 ("look" thousand) and the really smart ones not past ten (with those jump boots on).

It at least gets some people, to maybe even actually look somewhere out the door, I suppose. :S[:/]

I'm not panning to jump a camera anytime soon. I have no reason too. I was just curious how people would respond. The DZ circle jerk came in force as expected.

    Self-Admitted troll. [:/]

We'll keep this in mind when considering to respond (or not) to future inquiries now as well, accordingly.

analog protractors are so old school anyway, only old farts use them, I have a digital laser one. Works like a charm, gives me audible alarms when it measures 45deg, and logs all my pre-jump separations.

Yeah, but you're not typically supposed to always be so separated, from your own group, like that! :P

***Winning and collecting are worlds apart.

I doubt Larry's motive was to collect, rather just to shut down the unethical behavior.

Still - Would be nice to see him levy some serious attachment-type enforcement/collection action here somehow... Even if only to the effect of really F'ing up the doucebag's day. And who knows - if ever actually pursued - could possibly do maybe even a little more?

I am still totally shocked to hear that Hans has (apparently) somehow now, crawled back into bed with this slimeball? [:/]

Hans - you post on here (or at least you used to)... Care to speak up about this in any way, for yourself?

  12. Maybe it's time for Larry Hill to execute direct levy on his multiple judgments against this scumbag - and obtain attachment to the (now combined with Hans/SDtF?) business asset/receipts from these quite tangible/verifiable assets/revenue flow?

This is truly disconcerting on multiple levels to hear, if true - that Hans has really, actually now crawled into bed with this total SLIME OF THE EARTH!! [:/]

  13. Thanks Yoink... Yeah, I suppose that anyone with real longevity here, and an inclination to go searching, can probably dig around to find things like this as you have, right in here. My concern though now is less so for that profile, than the eager "newbie" who may be scouring these forums (and topical ones especially - like incidents!) to try and learn from them & see his proclamations (escalating even it seems to be much less "self-proclaimed" i.e. "BS Evident"!!) as this latest one he now so directly and unabashedly, did.

I know it's gone now... But did you see it? There was no "self proclaimed" disclaimer about it! Nope. This time / now he is (was) stating it, as if with real force of some sort of authority, that (paraphrase): "As president of the Tandem Passenger Association of Australia - I regularly see XX Dropzone routinely practicing the correct safety protocols, where others may not. ...This is why we reccommend only the following 2..." etc. - or something like that.

No "Self-Proclaimed" (this is meaningless) tags or disclaimers about it!!
And that - to me, is most definitely herein now - CROSSING THE LINE! >:(
