  8. Sometimes, I embarrass myself, by not knowing people's names as well as I know I should.... This is one of those moments..... It was only when I took the time to view that nice picture that Sandy posted, that I remember a great guy, a great jumper, a great personality! It was nice knowing you, all those years. And, as everyone has mentioned, you were a really good guy in this sport! Thanks for setting a good example of how one should live their life!!! Check's in the mail..... 9. Wow, what a well written piece.... I cried inside, as I read it. I choked up, and finally cried real tears, as I barely got through reading it to my non-jumping girlfriend.... Damn few things make me cry..... Peace be with you.... She is with good company now, as a member of "The Infinite Freefallers".... Check's in the mail........... 10. You have made an assumption that it was in 'plain sight'.... WRONG! I carry it in my Ga Tech laundry bag, with only one strap poking out the opening, to 'carry on my shoulder'. So, take your theory elsewhere..... I have only had problems, when dealing with idiots.... The only time the idiots have won, was leaving Sydney... There was one time, in Milwaukee, when another idiot refused to let me past a security checkpoint. My plan was to go the the Northwest World Club, which was in that concourse. I said, "OK', and walked to my departure concourse, where I was allowed to pass. Sitting on the plane, in 1st class, wearing a coat and tie, drinking coffee, chatting with the attendants...., this dweeb came on the plane, with guards!!!, saying he wanted the parachute!!! The captain intervened, saying he had no problem with me carrying it on board. The dweeb said, "It is not YOUR plane, until the door is closed!"... The guards told him to, "We have seen enough here. Shut up, and get back to your concourse." That ended that one.... Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... And, give money for Mr Douglas! www.mrdouglas.org
  11. Apparently, the 'security' people in Australia get a boner whenever they see a parachute... Although it was pre-911, back in 1995, I was forced to hand over my rig to "an airline agent", who promptly wrapped it in red, airline packing tape, and put it in the plane's baggage hold..... Never mind the Cypres 'sample X-ray' card, and instruction manual... The idiot security 'boss' said, "What if it opened on the plane!!!??? That is why we do not allow parachutes on board!".... Coming back from Christ Church, I had cards from everyone, but the airport manager in NZ. The baggage X-ray guy there even called everyone over, to actually "see what a sport parachute looked like on the screen". So, I was carrying it off the plane, thinking I would go from that plane, to my BA flight out of Sydney. But, a security checkpoint greeted our arrival. The very guy that was ordered to take it from me... was surprised to see me, coming off the flight, with the rig over my shoulder. I showed him all of my airport security biz cards from NZ. He said, "This is Australia. We could care less about NZ officials." I told him I was NOT giving it up, this time... He put a 'guard' on me, for the walk to the BA flight. The guard asked the BA attendant if I was allowed to carry it onboard. She said, "Only if I can use it, if the plane goes down!" The folks in the line laughed. The 'guard' walked away.... I am very glad that Australia is no longer a part of my skydiving trips.... Two years ago, the TSA folks 'pulled my pins', NOT the handles, the PINS! I found out, after arriving in Europe.... That cost me $80, for a foreign pack job...... AND, of course, I had to have it repacked, upon arriving back in the States... Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... 12. He helped me... Then, he hurt me..... But, we finally made up........ It was great jumping, and always learning, from him again.... I shall miss both......... Check's in the mail........ 13. Sunday, 26May13:reposted today.... Oh, this really sucks.... We had to put down the cat, yesterday. And now, this.... It is comforting to know that it was quick, and he was enjoying life to the fullest. For several years, he has asked me to jump with the SOS folks....lol, (I just turned 60 in 2013). He was my plane captain at my first SOS record jump, just last month. I am very surprised at the apparent reason here..... Grrrrr It has always been a pleasure knowing you, Larry! Now, you join the Endless Freefaller Society.... EFSMF! Check's in the mail.... Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... And, give money for Mr Douglas! www.mrdouglas.org

  15. Peas.....aaararrrrrggggggg (Sound of Homer Simpson drooling....) Whatta cool idea you had! I wonder if there are still a few there... That would be a nice bypass, and scoop-up, when I head down to Deland for POPS WR2011.... Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... And, give money for Mr Douglas! www.mrdouglas.org
  16. 'We' were on the way to altitude, riding Sugar Alpha at Warm Springs. 'We' had gotten run off from Westwind, for being the original "Tree People"... We caught the news from the pilot... Todd was sitting beside me, knowing that either Carol, or his mother, (the other load organizer for Cowboy),... would not be around anymore... That next week of funerals marked the last funerals I have ever attended.... And, it was almost 26 years, before I jumped another Caravan.... Even then, it felt kinda strange..... I carved the N551CC on a 'memorial rock', overlooking Skydive Hawaii... In 1987, I dropped by Jeff's gravesite, and 'talked' with him for a few minutes. It is not far from the former DZ, (now a neighborhood of big houses..). I was returning from Z-Hills... I turned to go back to the car, and some local guy was standing there. He said, "I have never seen someone do what you just did. I hope it helped you." It did..., a little. Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... 17. Karl taught me how to 'hacky-sack', as well as several tips on skydiving. Carol was very special.... GGGGrrrrrrrr Damn you, Cowboy! Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... And, give money for Mr Douglas! www.mrdouglas.org
  18. I used to carry the rig on with me, until the rent-a-goon in Austrailia refused to allow it onboard. It came off the belt, in New Zealand, wrapped in sticky packing tape... On my return, the New Zealand officials were great. But, when I got off in Sydney, there was the guy that was told to take it from me.... After I protested, since I had just carried it off that plane, he allowed me to proceed straight to my BA flight out of Austrailia, protected by a guard... The guard asked the stewardess if it was ok to have the parachute. She said, "Only if I can use it, if I need to."... He left me there... That was in 1995. Things are worse now. The airlines do not consider this as 'special baggage'. But, I doubt that would have kept this person from doing what they did.... TSA has been into my gearbag in the past. But, they have never messed with my parachute! Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... And, give money for Mr Douglas! www.mrdouglas.org
  19. The TSA guy that searched my gearbag decided to pull both the main and reserve pins on my rig. This was checked baggage, not carry-on. The agent had to remove the rig from the gearbag, to open the reserve flap. The reserve handle was sitted in the webbing holder. He put it back in the gearbag in a completely different way. I never found the lead seal. There was only the usual "we were there", orange card..... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Practice random acts of kindness, and senseless beauty... 21. >I'm not so sure Chet had to pay for those tandems in DeLand. That sounds like something Bob would do. I had the pleasure of jumping in a 'several-way', with Bob taking Chet as his tandem passenger, on his 85th birthday. I still have the video, and enjoy watching it, remembering the great vibes of that day. I still have the metric altimeter, bought from Chet, along a many T-shirts over time..... I never questioned the price of anything from Chet. He was always the first to open the hangar doors, and the guy that ran you out, in order to close them.... I saw him all over the country, enjoying the DZ life in the van..... A cool dude! And, as Bill Booth related those last few minutes with Chet, whatta nice way to exit this planet... 22. >I've never met you, but by these posts and your patches >and stickers on skydivers and the aircraft, you must have >been one fantastic person. It's has taken a lot of time to read all the responses to this tragic bit of news... You put it best, for me... Yeah, I never met you Shannon. But, I felt so sad, when I saw the 'GirlFallDown' heading. It was a feeling not so unlike when the blue light comes on in the rear view mirror... Then, there is nothing you can do... 23. >tranny shop, skydivers, California, my mind went someplace else entirely! Whew! Good to know it wasn't just me.... Sick minds think alike... I see you in my mind, every time I drive down to Deland.... I think about your part in my Freak Brothers Jump video, just to make me smile, (inside and out......). At the POPS/FL jumps, I thought about you on every climb... It made me try to be an even safer jumper! Those that knew you, will always be safer..., because of you... 24. >I'll never forget walking in from the landing area with Burt and JP after completing a 100 way. We were all full of ourselves about it. Burt said to JP "Not bad for 98 white guys.' < Wow, that flashed me back to jumping with the two in Z-Hills... Never had a bad jump, always had a fun time, with Burt. I'll probably think of him, during the climb, on future big-ways... So, be careful JP! I want to do some more jumps with you. Check's in the mail.... 25. Well, that sucks! I've enjoyed many a jump with Pat over the years.... I think I first met him in Z-Hills.. He was a good person, as well as a great skydiver.
