  1. The lovely lady I am seeing now didn't know I carry until our 4th date when during a drive to the mountains I asked if she would like to go to the range the following day. She asked if I ever thought about getting a concealed permit lol, I informed her that I always carry. She was very surprised that she had not noticed. concealed means just that
  2. Im not seeing your point here, its a passive detector and does nothing till it detects a gunshot - there are no legitimate uses of a firearm in the city other than defensive. If I use my firearm I will want help there just as fast as they can get there... Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  3. as a present day self appointed canopy Nazi my jump from the 170 to the 135 was stupid, fully square to elliptical and a 35' drop in size is not a good way to do it - but self assessment can be difficult at times and like many of us I suffer from "I can do it" syndrome looking back, jump # 155 and 156 were on a triathalon 135 and I am sure the impression those two jumps on that canopy gave me was why I felt ready to try the stiletto of the same size - triathalons fly nice but big - they feel larger than the square footage which I know now - don't get me wrong, they are nice canopy's but they are a little on the docile side - then the stiletto which has a crazy fast response to any input - fast, very fast and I was unprepared for how the canopy seems to anticipate your every move. After more than 800 jumps on my crossbraced canopy I have purchased another stiletto 135 which is a 60' increase in size - I want my canopy ride back - to be able to flip and spin to dance across the sky - the xbraced was fun but I lost that, deploy at 3000' - two 360's and I was setting up for my swoop - not much canopy time. I want the whole skydive back
  4. Veterans day at the parade this year We got to the street a little late - just about a minute before the first vehicles reached us, just enough time to squeeze in - it was the best turnout I have seen in a long time. Next to us was a family of six, all the kids but the youngest were wearing hats, baggy pants gangster style - hats backwards, or cocked to the side. The color guard was nearly to us, I was standing behind Conner - he's young and only about 4' tall - "Dad whats this" he asked and then tried to use his offhand to twist a finger over the others and do what looked like the spock at the same time. where did you see that Conner? he did it to me he said pointing to the oldest kid. Means he's an idiot Conner - don't ever let me catch you doing that and turn your hat back around - never mind, colors are here off with the hat and show respect, doggone it Conner stand up straight ( he did know to put his hand over his heart ) Walking home after the parade I explained why I salute the flag and he puts his hand over his heart then told him what that hand signal meant and also the definition of poser Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... 5. a skydiver is no longer a tourist on his 10th anniversary but welcome, sounds like ya got the bug
  6. not sure if he is trolling or not. he kind of sounds like me back in the day. moving sucks, always lose something, but one of three missing log books has been found - my first one
  7. DOH!!!! lol, well now you have real motivation to keep one Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  8. lol, ok. maybe unconventional would be a better word than sneaky. The lady was typically a level headed person, a former student, friend, packer, she wanted to become a rigger and an instructor - she had just over 100 jumps and had several low pulls - the aad should have fired on the last one - she had been talked to previously by the dzo who overruled me, he didn't want her grounded - but on this one I nearly had a heart attack, the spot was great and she would have impacted very near, the canopy ride was short... when I get scared I get angry and usually do something stupid - this time I just stomped into the dz shack to give myself time to cool down - I could immediately hear everyone -packers, other instructors, the dzo berating her - heh, they were really going at her in loud voices and I could hear her excuses and could tell she was angry, I'm sure she scared herself - nobody listens when they are angry and defensive. I had to meet the plane for a tandem video so I geared up and met the 206 on the ramp still thinking on how to get through to her on how dangerous it really is, figured I would sit down and talk to her and ground her for this one if the dzo didn't. I landed and video'd the tandem landing - as I was picking up my canopy the TI and student were walking in I could see her stomping out to the landing area obviously still mad - I am sure the whole staff was going at her the whole time we were climbing to altitude, she came up to me and in an angry voice said "I suppose you want to jump all over me too!" I just put all my gear on the ground stepped close and gave her a hug... which she did not return. and quietly said in her ear: I have lost two friends in this sport... don't make me watch you die. that was it - her anger immediately gone - her lip started quivering as I looked into her eyes and the tears started she was sobbing out I wont, I wont, I'm sorry - and now I got my hug
  9. lol, right there with you John! Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  10. oh that's priceless! When I was working at Richland Skysports the co-dzo's suddenly one day dumped the job on me and made me the enforcer - thankfully we had some very heads up jumpers and I didn't have to do very much enforcing - just once with a lowpulling newish jumper which I handled in a very sneaky way and a couple of unknown jumpers with mains way too small for their experience who were given the option of using rentals for free or not jumping. that is a great solution! Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  11. this scenario is why I never advocate open carry - even with a retention holster it could be stripped from you too easily - keep the weapons hidden. but in this case a weapon was not called for and not having it (and having quick reflexes) worked just fine. Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  12. microphones to detect gunshots - I like - if there is a gunshot in the city its either an illegal offensive use or a defensive use of a weapon and the faster the police can get there the better. THC breathalyzer - I like - driving while impaired by anything is not good, I watched a man die when I was age 6 in front of our truck who was impaired, if the turn light would have changed at the wrong moment and we pulled out he would have killed all of us instead of just himself, the telephone pole, tree, and the house he came to rest in. I am very against driving while impaired by anything. Intelligent surveillance camera's... not so much - imagine shopping or just living in a big city and circling the block to find parking to go into your apartment, or dropping a package off at a friends house or shop at the door - could get you a very hostile visit from some very well armed men. although I don't really like the idea of the surveillance camera's I could see how they would be good for area's where large crowds gather like times square, statue of liberty - things like that where detecting a package bomb could mean life or death. Brrrrrr..... How Orwellien we are becoming Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  13. I agree with you that it is a serious problem - one that ends with a gun but does not begin with it - Its the lack of respect for a persons own self and the right for another to exist. I am not trying to brush anything under the rug. I just cannot see how disarming law abiding citizens will do anything to stem the murder rate - and yes I do realize that legitimate gun owners have snapped and killed others - but disarmament will only lead to victims without the means to defend themselves - does anyone really think that by disarming the law abiding people that criminals wont have firearms? I quite honestly don't have the answer, but I do know that disarming us isn't it. Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  14. just for the record - I really am trying to see your point of view and I know sarcasm, frustration and typing all don't really get the point across nearly as well as face to face but if I take what you write to mean exactly what you mean I cant see where disarming law abiding citizens makes any sense... How is it cowardly to insure I have the ability to protect my son? I realize your angry and frustrated over this incident and others like it - trust me, gun owners are too. it would be awesome if the world was nice - where there were no people who would kill you to take what is yours or merely for the fun of it. But anywhere anytime something horrible can happen - it doesn't just happen in bad neighborhoods... - a stop for fuel in a nice neighborhood could leave you or your family the victim of some insane/drugged out/ or bored person with a weapon - be it gun/knife/bat/ or merely their fists and boots. - is it rare? sure, but it only takes once at the wrong place and time. A firearm is in most circumstances the best force multiplier - no matter your size or physical health it gives you the best chance of overcoming an attacker - if you see the attack coming - nothing can protect against something you didn't see. lack of Training is where I believe many of this type of accidents stem from - there are those people who believe that one trip to the range a year with a box of ammo shooting at a static target makes them proficient... it doesn't even come close. If this lady who died at the hands of her child would have had a competent instructor perhaps she would still be alive with this accident never happening - and she wasn't stupid by any stretch of the imagination by what I have read about her - a competent instructor would have stressed the importance of maintaining control of the weapon at all times - on the body carry or locked up in the gunsafe at home. I carry concealed on my body, in a level III retention holster - you would never know by looking, I don't advertise - I don't want anyone to know its there when I am out and about - its an ace in the hole that I hope to never need. I am sure you have read or watched the news when they talk about the killings in countries that have made private gun ownership illegal or insanely difficult to obtain - it happens there as well. Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  15. Its sop for the anti-gun crowd to stand on the graves of the dead. This woman made a mistake that cost her life. Its a tragic accident that training would have prevented - purse carry is one of the dumbest ways to carry - even in a purse designed with the concealed compartment. Carry on your person or leave it at home - never out of your control - a purse doesn't meet the criteria of "on your person" Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  16. dats what happens when you mess with someone with a direct line to the almighty!!! your bullets miss - his don't!!! Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  17. personally with the people I have known who have claimed line overs with a canopy that showed no damage when inspected - I am inclined to think that their line over was a misdiagnosed tension knot. I am not saying line overs don't or can't happen, I just believe they are more rare than everyone thinks - the tension knot I had on my first stiletto 135 took the brake line above their cascade to the a-b cascade on the front right and it pulled the tail in and the nose in, if I hadn't had the altitude or been able to stop the spin and really look at the problem and see the birdsnest I would have probably would have chopped and thought it was a line over from the look of the canopy. 19. ahh - the good old days of f-111, when new they opened hard and landed soft - then as they aged the two reversed a tad bit. Glide path... were they all noted for hard openings? my Arial 170 fractured my back on my very first tandem video - I was thankful to still be able to walk and that my camera didn't rip my head off. Every time I hear Glide Path its come up in a convo about hard openings...or the Nova Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  20. I have a 120 micro raven and have had one opening on it - yes its overloaded. yes it opened fast - but it was not any harder than any of the others I have had on swift, tempo, and phantom (round) a terminal opening usually tends to smack you pretty good - the swift+ really rang my bell at terminal - the tempo at terminal was a little softer but still hard its a reserve, its packed to open subterminal or terminal FAST. 400' has been the farthest I have travelled before having a reserve over my head. couple questions: 1.Is it her first reserve ride ever? 2.did she tip head down while pulling the ripcord? 3.not that its related to the opening but has the SB been performed on this micro raven? 4.is it possible that the leg straps were unevenly tightened or one had slipped during opening shock? which would make turning one way easier. the micro raven is a slug to fly - slow turns and a rediculously short stroke on the flair when overloaded - but it gets you to the ground in one piece. It opened, it saved her life, you are owed a bottle

  22. they cleared out the mental wards... they will get around to doing that soon enough I am sure They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  23. that is a very interesting idea - I am not a rigger but did train as one with two different riggers before I decided I really didn't want the responsibility. lineovers are kinda rare and when we were doing test drops trying to create them we failed even packing with the tail way out in front of the nose which was pushed way into the pack - which made us all wonder... what really causes them... bad luck coupled with bad packing? As we really tried to induce them. All I have done for quite a few years is clear the nose then wrap the tail. knock on wood... no lineovers yet They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
  24. Try a pocket slider at the very least, no reason to put up with hard openings. I put a pocket slider on my arial 170 years ago, it helped a bit but I would still have the occasional slammer - the last one fractured two vertebre in my mid back then was sold, I couldn't take those openings since then I had an oversized slider put on every canopy even my stiletto - yeah I know they have a rep for soft openings but after cracking bones I was a little apprehensive. my FX opened hard and after the first month had an oversized slider made. both give extremely soft and predictable openings. I don't remember the dimensions on the stiletto but the fx slider was I think 1 1/4" wider and 1" more front to back (offhand) but do call and talk to the manufacturers - no need to be a test jumper if your smarter than I was I really should have called - but my rigger is much smarter than I am and may have done just that.
