That is interesting video. The early manned spacecraft depended on reefed rounds of course for crew survival. I heard 2 Apollo guys, at least, mention that of course there was some concern about the chutes, but they didnt worry about it until it was time to do so. No sense in worrying for 12 days, you know. They always seemed to work, though on Apollo 15 they did get a burned and collapsed chute before splashdown. It seems to me that a reefed round is indeed reliable, but of course so are the current day square reserves.

When my daughter did a tandem, they showed the students an okay video. But if it were up to me, I would show a video ( slowed down ) with narration and telling the students to not a). stick their legs out front in freefall b). dont be reaching back at any time but especially under canopy. I have seen enough scary videos... if I were a TM I would emphasize a few points such as these before the jump.

Hard to believe he would even consider landing that canopy, from what I know. His instructors need to sit him down and ask him why he did that, in my view, not merely laugh and say, hey don't land that thing next time. The guy has an issue realizing the situation he is in on every jump. That is the big gap in this incident. If he has more than, say, 30 or 40 jumps he should really know better. He needs some additional instruction no matter how many jumps he has.

I have a cousin who is now age 66. He spent many sessions in the county jail, never ever worked other than short term menial jobs ( not very many ), did check fraud, DUI's..... I will leave off the rest. I don't wish him ill, but I don't really care, either. One way or the other.
