  1. Well, looks like the FAA figured out the need for this (hopefully not because I annoyed them asking for the data to keep my database updated) so they've added the rigger seal lookup to their airmen inquiry page.

You can search for any FAA issued rigger seal code at the bottom, no other fields are necessary.

    https://amsrvs.registry.faa.gov/airmeninquiry/

I'll probably be decommissioning my search now that it's completely obsolete.

No rigger data was compromised, just the secret location of how to access it.

  3. Hey everyone, after an unfortunate leak of information which brought this application to a large group of skydivers/riggers, I've decided to make it available for everyone.

    https://www.theonlyski.com/rigger.php

I will remove access if it starts getting abused, I've kept a pretty close circle of people that have had access to it and it's great for looking up a previous rigger to get in contact with them. If it starts getting abused for anything more than making contact with the rigger one on one to discuss work, I WILL remove it from public access.

    RIP my bandwidth allotment.

***Just curious if any other's have run into these issues. Replacing The FAA won't let me hang a water cooled LS3 and use it commercially. OK fine. I'll play along. ?

Never seen it get off the ground but I'm not holding my breath to see it. The left turning engine would sure be interesting on rotation.

I know the camera probably didn't pick up as much as a human eye can (especially when the eyes are adjusted for night driving), but there was damn near zero reaction time available. I bet 7/10 if not more people would have hit her just the same if they had full control. The driver was looking away but I don't know that she would've been able to react in time.

  7. But, how do you even log the time in it? SEL? RH? Multi? All of the above?

I think it's a cool idea, but I really just cannot see how they plan on integrating with the US NAS. Most of the general public has no idea about the rules and regulations involved and even if they're flying low altitudes, eventually the weather is going to crap out or the systems will glitch and the people inside are going to need to take control and save their bacon (also wouldn't surprise me if they put a BRS in it).

Flight instructors are authorized to act as PIC to instruct under BasicMed (and have been able to with a third class).

Can I flight instruct under BasicMed?
Yes. The FAA has stated that “flight instructors meeting the requirements of this rule may act as PIC while giving flight training without holding a medical certificate, regardless of whether the person receiving flight training holds a medical certificate.” The FAA considers the flight instructor who is acting as PIC to be “receiving compensation for his or her flight instruction” under instructor privileges but is “exercising private pilot privileges while acting as PIC of the flight.”

The CDNs don't typically "push" to you and it would be kind of hard to do with your computer behind a NAT and not using port forwarding on your router.

And...you would need a browser that listened on a port for incoming connections.:D:D:D

Yeah, I forgot about the whole browser part. :D

  12. I think something on your PC must be downloading an update. There's not likely going to be an easy way to stop it from happening without seriously breaking some other things.

If you are really concerned with it, you could set up a local DNS server and blackhole all of the domains... but good luck with using the internet with that enabled.

The CDNs don't typically "push" to you and it would be kind of hard to do with your computer behind a NAT and not using port forwarding on your router. A device on your network is most likely requesting updates. On Windows 10 (maybe 8 as well) you can set your connection type to 'metered' and that's supposed to stop it from doing background downloads but I've never tried that.

Go to the Amazon web site and neither of these conditions are covered in the pull-down menus. I mean, if Amazon KNOWS a package was lost in transit, couldn't it provide an automatic "Resend/Cancel" option?

Pull up a web chat with them, tell them what's going on and I'd be surprised if they didn't have replacement orders on the way as fast as the system could process it.

  14. I was pretty confused when I went back to Texas for a trip after having joined the Army and left for several years. Turns out, the tow trucks there were authorized to run amber and blue lights.

Not sure when the laws started to change but I think it was in response to people not moving over for tow trucks (which is pretty dangerous for the truck operator).

Although I only have 37 hours in a Cessna 152 (a long time ago) I believe you can maintain altitude in a turn if you are flying a powered aircraft. Also, going near the surface of the water at (reported 5 feet) is (I think, not a big deal) if your airplane is amphibious. That is probably how you practice landings. Now, going that low at high speed - I don't know.

You can maintain altitude in most turns but there's no free lunch here. Depending on the bank angle, you likely will need more elevator back pressure (need more lift due to the redirection of your vertical component of lift) and in a steeper turn, more power (to overcome the additional drag from the extra lift you're generating). If you load up enough G forces, you can also raise your stall speed (due to increased load factor) sufficiently to stall the aircraft during the turn (not a good thing to do during low altitude operations).

It's also interesting that the FAA doesn't require pilots to demonstrate an accelerated stall for their private (which I believe Roy held) certificate since they're considered 'demonstration stalls'. The CFI is supposed to demonstrate it during the training for the student however it's possible an instructor wouldn't bother demonstrate it since many stick to the PTS/ACS maneuvers required for the students certification.

If you are skilled enough and in control it seems like that is simply another way to have fun/to play.

The problem is that even if you're skilled enough, sometimes things don't go well anyways and being at low attitudes doesn't give you any room for error.

    http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/accidents/pilot-killed-in-plane-crash-at-tampa-executive-airport/2185491

I've flown with Ki, in the accident aircraft. He flew it somewhat aggressively (but not as hard as and it just happens that this one time, it didn't work out. That's all it took. He flew the plane nearly daily to-from work at the airport I learned to fly at.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't fly low and enjoy their aircraft (it sure as hell is fun to see the ground screaming past you some times), what I am saying is that there is an increased risk in doing so and something that would be so benign as an accelerated stall at 3,000 AGL has a whole different set of issues when it happens much lower.

This guy, Dr. Bruce Chien, can fix this with the FAA if it can be fixed. He is Da Man when it comes to hard case medicals. Contact him and be excruciatingly honest with him, he can smell BS from a mile away.

If you know anyone that is an AOPA member he is well known on the Forums there.

Yep, Bruce is awesome. You do have to tell him everything or he will cut you away like a spinning main.

Very reasonable price too, he just wants to help people and I am positive that he put in far more work than he wanted payment for.

  19. I started off as a fun jumper then eventually became a rigger, AFF and Tandem instructor and actually jumped full time for about a year or so. I never expected that my main source of income would be skydiving, but it did for a little while (I wanted a break from the job routine).

I've never gone crazy small on canopies, only non touching CRW, no base or wingsuit either.

It is what you make of it. Consider your personal goals, set your personal limits and stick with them.

IIRC, in Bahrain, they were two for 1 BD. SOO good! Then I saw a place when passing through Pensacola that advertised Shawarma. So NOT good! [:/]

I also learned they are made a little differently in different countries anyway, so not sure whether I'd even like the ones from Kuwait. Bahraini ones were definitely spectacular, and yeah, thanks guys -- now I crave one! >:(

I want some, have been thinking about them off and on for months actually, but never went to any place that sells them because I know it would just be a disappointment. Lebanon had a good shawarma too but I ate far more in Iraq and I think I liked those more. Doesn't get much more legit than a food shack on the side of an ASR. If you would have told me 15 years ago that I'd be sitting on my couch missing Iraqi food, I would've laughed pretty hard at ya.

I never had any from Kuwait (or any of those other countries I "visited") but I would love to find a legit place in the area as a supplier.
