That's a quite paradoxical statement considering the overwhelming vast majority of the best wingsuit pilots in America have never once step foot in that tunnel. I've flown with the current world record holders for speed, time and distance (it's not the same person for all three) and we have discussed the tunnel to which they have responded to me they have no experience flying in it.

I haven't been in the tunnel myself so I cant say from direct experience, but based on the countless videos it appears they are using a low airspeed and forcing slow, high AoA flight which if true that is the complete opposite of what you want to be doing when flying a wingsuit in the sky or in the BASE environment.

The tunnel does look fun, but the value is not there. When you take into account flights, hotel, all that the sky ends up being less than half the cost per min of flying, and you're doing the real thing vs a wind tunnel.

I don't know if you have seen but the tunnel now can change both airspeed and angle of attack, guys working there are doing some silly stuff in big acro suits like freaks/Hogs and judging by how quick people progress I do think that it will be same story as with free flying and vertical tunnels. It is also a great tool for begginers, I did FFC with 2 people who first did 30 min in wingsuit tunnel and they aced it, really smooth flying.

  2. My friend jumps with one, send me a PM with your email adress and I can send you a link to a raw file of one jump so you can make your own judgment how it works in freefall. I think the stabilisation is sick but it gets confused sometimes and quality is not as good as a Go pro. As long as it doesnt crash as often as GP7 it seems like it will be a good conteder.

  3. There is a video somewhere where a group of wingsuits get out and fly in line of flight, one guy jumps after them and is supposed to do a high pull but instead takes a long delay and flies through wingsuit formation. Sure, they could have turned away from jump run as soon as they got out but shit happens. Plus one big factor winth wingsuits jumping last is that everybody can jump closer to the dropzone, we won´t have a problem getting back from a long spot unless the pilot made a massive mistake :P

Thank you everybody for taking the time to answer me. It's really appreciated.

This helps me with my decision. I'm going the Swift 3 route. :-) I do realize the suit is... swift and that it will be quite a change from the Indy. I plan on depowering it for my first jumps. Do you have a recommendation for the power level for the first jumps ? It's seems to be graded from 1 to 10. Anyways, I 'm placing my order in the comings days and I'll probably put 15 to 20 more jumps on the Indy (we rent them freefly at my club) before I receive it.

You dont have to depower anything, if anything it will make the suit fly worse. I started with Swift 1, moved on to Swift 2, never touched the zippers in the beggining and never had a problem, tried few times to open up the zippers just for fun and I felt it was harder to fly it. Let it inflate and do its job. And I agree that funks are slow as hell, I also always had to fly in brakes in my swift 2 in formation with a Funk. It could ofcourse be the pilot but I'm not so sure.

I wouldn't expect the Freak to be faster than ATC, if sth than otherwise as bigger suit introduces more drag (e.g. my Swift 3 is much faster than Freak 2)

I guess there is something to it, Yury won advanced class during Tony suits Performance Class in ATC leaving Freaks and even a Colugo 3 behind him.

    https://skyderby.ru/events/79

Ofcourse a lot depends on the pilot but I remember Amber kicking ass in her ATC in Speed competition last year. Anybody have jumped both ATC and Freak 2 with flysight enough times to compare the two?

  6. Nothing to see, you guys were right. Elevation on flysight data goes up by few feet but what I did not check was all the other data, first of all the alltitude gain takes like half a second, second my vertical velocity is around 20-40 miles/h at top of the "flare". I jumped with a borrowed flysight and got excited when I looked at the graph quickly :P

  7. +1 on a Thriatlon. It seems to work very well as a WS canopy. Used ones are dirt cheap, I have a 120 that I load 1.6-1.7ish, it has around 800 jumps on original lineset and it works pretty damn well after I dialed in my packjobs. Jumped it mostly with Swifts but had good openings when trying Freak and ATC once I figured out deployment during flaring. When it ends up in linetwists, it flies straight. What I like the most about it is that it's super easy to pack, the material almost feels like F111 even though it's not. It also works ok for normal terminal jumps, you can pack it for super soft openings. The glide is pretty bad though but it might be only at higher wingloadings, not sure. I personally think WS specific canopies are a bit overkill unless WS is the only thing your gonna be doing anyway. but I understand why people get them to upsize. If you figure out proper deployment technique any 7 cell will do just fine and you will be able to use it for normal jumps too.

  8. I did menage to gain alltitude in a Swift 3, only like 10-15 ft but I only hade few jumps on it, never could do that in Swift 2 though, I guess Swift 3 has airlocks helping keeping the suit pressurised when you flare? It was super fun though, I got the same feelings in the flare as with ATC or Freak, just obviously not as much alltitude gain.

  9. Best trackers can sustain 1.6-1.8 glide ratio in PTS from what I gather. Hard to max out your suit without reference points, I think the only way to see how good your tracking is actually base jumping same exit point over and over again. But then again, base tracking is more about how you can get most horizontal distance by playing with your AOA through the alltitude window you get, gaining speed, creating lift, bleeding off speed to fly as far as possible. Skydiving will not get you very far

    Hi,

I've done about 100 flights in my Prodigy 2.
I know, the Prodigy is a very small wingsuit but I really feel comfortable with it.
My exits are good and clean, my flight planning is good and compared to the Paralog performance database https://ppc.paralog.net/selecttracks.php?select=equipment my performance is also quite good (I manage a glide ratio of about 1:1.5 up to 1:1.8 - 1,5 meters forward for each meter downward).

So now I'm thinking about upsizing:
The DZ's where I usually jump are kind of small with not many wingsuiters around, so I'm focusing on performance and not so much on flocking with others.

Is the step up from my prodigy to an intermediate suite like the Squirrel Funk 3 or ATC too big? Or is it ok?

And should I choose a suite with grips (ATC) or a gripless /hands-free (Funk 3)? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
I think, the performance might be better on a suite with grips (ATC) but pulling might be easier/safer on a hands-free suit?

I did maybe 15 jumps on prodigy 2 and didn't really like the suit so I sold it, 2 years later I started jumping with swift 1 and thought it was actually easier to fly it plus performace was way better. Prodigy felt more like a tracksuit to me. I did over 100 jumps on swift 1 and 2 before I tried ATC, I think going straight from prodigy would be a big step. I think doing some jumps on swift 2 before getting in ATC would be the wise thing to do. Plus learning backflying in a smaller suit would probably make you learn faster than doing that in ATC which is VERY powerfull suit compared to prodigy. Also, deployment will be completely different and more challenging in the beggining than what you are used to, I hope you have a WS friendly canopy. So my advice would be, borrow a swift, do some jumps in it and then go for ATC if you feel comfortable, even a Swift will surprise you with how much more performace you will be getting.

Why not just loosely wrap the top skin instead? For the PD Horizon, PD recommends very light wrapping of the top skin and leaving a small gap to let air through at the tip of the cocoon. I do a single wrap on the tail all the way at the bottom and that is it for WS jumps. I would think that effectively accomplishes the same thing you're trying to do, except it doesent leave the grommets exposed to get moved out of place while bagging the canopy (or extraction).

Once I started packing this way, my openings improved a lot during WS jumps.

  12. Any tips? How effective can you back fly with no backfly inlets,? Any chance being able to fly next to others with decent forward speed or you need to go steep to keep the wings more pressurised? I'm a begginer with Swift 1 and have not tried it yet. Anyone tried retrofitting their own inlets?

  13. Anybody jumping with a Triathlon? I use a 120 loaded at 1.5, only few jumps in a Swift 1 and so far and the openings were...hmmm interesting:PIf I roll the nose it seems to snivel a bit longer, if I don't it opens pretty damn hard. And it pretty much sinks straight down if it's windy :P Anyone have some experience with them?
BTW, here you can see my worst opening so far :P

  14. I have lots of tracking/angle jumps, both with and without tracking suit and with a tight fitting main canopy and never had a problem even without dynamic corners. My first wingsuit jumps were also done without dynamic corners. If you plan to wingsuit alot then sure, get them done, if not then its a bit of a over kill. I bet its just your body position. Also, when you pack, make sure that the lines between the last line stow and risers are same lenght on both sides.

  15. Was it made for your? My friend had a Swift that was way to big for him, he had no problems flying it but he did notice a huge difference when he actually flew a Swift 2 that fit him well. I have a second hand Swift that fits me well, with my very limited experience as someone new to wingsuiting, "unstable" would be the last thing to describe my experience. I do feel that the arm wings are to big compared to legwing and its easy to end up flying to slow, give it some gas and it flies super nice. I see what they did there with making arm wings smaller on Swift 2, people that own it love it. I think 99% of wingsuit fliers will be happy with whatever manufacture they choose as long as the suit fits well, all 3 big manufactures make quality products. Brand wars are gay and unproductive, I have seen you post about squirrel before, please share if you really have any meaningful information for people on the market looking for a new wingsuit, if not, STFU:)

******Well, i've made my pick, i would order stuff i havent even seen from only one of those manufacturers you just mentioned. But i'll leave the guess to you! :)

Since you are such an expert I guess you jumped suits from all the manufactures multiple times? Tell us more about it

my expert-opinion is costly. too bad you cant afford it!
Your expert opinion is not even worth getting for free unless you have 500 jumps on different wingsuit models. I doubt you have ever flown a squirrel suit.

  18. Well, don't want to sound like an ass but you are the one that made a decision to buy and use a fully stowless bag that was not approved by the manufacturer of your container. You should take responsibility for making informed decision when buying stuff. The fact that he blocked you on Facebook is a different story...
Every time I packed a fully stowless bag I thought it was a very bad idea[:/]

  19. We had a similar situation on our dropzone few years ago. I'm not 100 procent sure if I remember the details correctly.
-rushed pack job, two packers worked on the rig to make it quicker, flipped 3 rings on the right side which they didn't notice
-tandem instructor was already waiting by the plane when the rig was driven to him
-the white loop broke from the opening shock
-now the pair was under a streaming canopy at near terminal velocity
-TM could not locate cutaway handle
-TM dig out the yellow cable with his finger, cutaway and deployed the reserve.
This was a very experienced TM with 5000 tandem jumps at the time.
