  1. Not all wingsuiters live to buzz tandems. I personally don't buzz them. The greater concern I have is the degree of precision used to write the BSR. It must be written to increase safety and decrease liability. The preliminary wording prohibits flying a wingsuit within 500 feet of a student. It does not include 'while the student is under freefall or canopy', nor does it define anywhere what is considered to be a 'wingsuit'. What about camera suits with wings? This BSR might be increasing liability if a videot flying outside video bumps into a tandem student. I hope this is addressed in the final BSR. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  2. I haven't seen the actual BSR, but I hope it is written with more precision than what has so far been shown. In addition to adding 'while in freefall or under canopy', it should probably clarify what a 'wingsuit' is. A camera suit has wings, and I am pretty sure more camera flyers have bumped into tandem students than wingsuiters. I think to the general public (and legal counsel) any skydiving suit with wings would be classified as a wingsuit. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  3. I guess the only rationalization is zero tolerance for additional unnecessary risk to tandem students. You don't want to screw the pooch. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  4. I agree the wording should include something like '... of any student in freefall or under canopy". What if the pilot of the plane is learning to skydive and doesn't have his 'A' license yet? I know it is silly, but the BSR as written will not allow wingsuiters to leave the plane. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  5. As much as I'd like my opinion to be known, I cannot participate in a poll without a 'boobies' option. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  6. FAR 91.17 bottle to throttle only pertains to someone acting or attempting to act as a crewmember of a civil aircraft. It does not pertain to skydiving operations. It is a judgement call based on the 'appears to be under the influence of' clause in sec 105.7. Most professionally run dropzones consider skydivers to be under the influence of alcohol if they have any amount of detectable alcohol in their system. I know if I had a beer at my DZ for lunch, I would have to blow a 0.0 on an alcohol test to get to skydive. They actually check at my DZ. If you want to drink and jump - become a base jumper.

  8. They were civilians, but according to Wikipedia, " President Jimmy Carter signed legislation #95–202, Section 401, The G.I. Bill Improvement Act of 1977, granting the WASP corps full military status for their service." However, none were eligible at the time of their service to receive any of the following the following decorations that would qualify for an inground burial: Medal of Honor Distinguished Service Cross (Air Force Cross or Navy Cross) Distinguished Service Medal Silver Star Purple Heart So I voted no. 9. Did you get to play on that cool slide?
  10. A dwarf escaped from prison so he could fulfill his dream to go skydiving. (Skydiving is when you jump out of a plane with a parachute to slow your fall) .... Sorry if that was a little con descending. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  11. In Part 105.3, the FAA defines the TI to be 'parachutist in command' and the student to be the 'passenger parachutist'. In pilot training, if the student pilot is not acting as pilot in command of the aircraft, then the instructor must have a commercial license which requires a 2nd class medical. It would logically flow that the FAA will someday require TI's to have a 2nd class medical. Given that todays TI's are not licensed by the FAA, they don't care and don't require any medical. Someday they might. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  12. Be careful. I had a UPPP operation done a couple years ago to help with sleep apnea. They removed my tonsils & uvula. I ate so much ice cream while I was on painkillers I didn't realize I was 'burning' my throat until I came off the painkillers. You are better off drinking fluids than eating ice cream. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  13. I think it is covered automatically in 91.117.d (d) If the minimum safe airspeed for any particular operation is greater than the maximum speed prescribed in this section, the aircraft may be operated at that minimum speed. Having said that, I don't know of any aircraft where the safe KIAS is above 250 knots. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  14. +1 I was wondering when an airplane owner was going to put things in perspective. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  15. You could always wait until you already have a ridiculous amount of time and money on your hands and then it won't be a problem. I am only half kidding. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  16. I have purchased all of my gear through DZ.COM and haven't been ripped off yet. It does happen, but I believe it to be rare. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  17. The only bullfight I have ever been to was Pamplona. I gave the bulls the opportunity to kill me during the 826 yard run. Even doing that, it was still a net negative karma experience. Watching animals being slaughtered for fun is not something I ever plan on doing again. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  18. You are correct. I am not harmed by other people believing in extraterrestrial intelligence. As of 1993, no government funding is used for the NASA SETI program. Prior to that, they were spending up to 2 million dollars a year looking for Little Green Men. I am not harmed by people who believe Hitler, Elvis, the Easter Bunny, or Xenu are alive. Life is short, believe what you want. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  19. I'll take the bait. IMHO, it is very likely some form of life (bacterial, single cell, multicell) exists elsewhere in the universe. But if you believe there is intelligent extra terrestrial life, the burden of proof is on you, not me. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  20. In a perfect world, that may be true, but given that the wingsuiters and TI's are all experienced skydivers, they should be able to agree on a plan and stick to it. (Starting with no buzzing of tandems). My DZ runs two caravans, so it is nearly impossible for me to wait for a load that doesn't have tandems. I just don't feel obligated to buzz them, so the issue is avoided. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  21. Apples and Oranges. Diver's Alert Network offers travel and medical insurance. It does not solicit donations for injured divers nor is it set up as a 501(c)(3). For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

  23. The IRS basic rule is commuting from home to any place of business is not deductible. The only mileage that would conceivably be deductible is if you drove from home to a dropzone in the morning, then drove to a second dropzone. The mileage to that second dropzone would be deductible, but the mileage from that second dropzone home would not be. If you have a FEIN, and it is associated with a Sub-S corporation you created, the DZ does not have to file a 1099. (you are probably not doing this - you would be filing an 1120S to notify the IRS of income and expense). For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  24. The exact same thing happened to me in 1978. Those are 5 seconds I will never remember. I don't know that many first time jumpers or any tandem students understand the risk and complexity involved in making sure their carnival ride goes smoothly. AFF-I and TI's are unappreciated. Get used to it and leave the newbies alone. If they stay in the sport long enough, they will learn to appreciate the skill and effort. Having said that, I fully understand not sugar coating debriefings. The people who are making you feel bad for doing something wrong are trying to save your life. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  25. If you are anywhere near mid Ohio during the week, start Skydiving has a $18 special to 13K for fun jumpers on Wednesdays. That day is pretty popular. Every other weekday they have one or two caravans running with mostly tandems and a couple fun jumpers. Sometimes they close on Mondays to give the staff a day off. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
