  1. "Blows the GP out of the water at 4k" I think we're talking about different cameras? I thought the prime doesn't have 4k...
  2. Any news on this one? I don't need 4k and I really like the price and form factor compared to the other stuff on the market, but it would be nice to get a jumper's review.
  3. The Bernette 812 has the rotary hook mechanism
  4. Sometimes on the ADHD inter-tubes you've gots to fill in the ____ with logic when people are less than precise with their words due to the nature of the medium. But for the sake of clarity: I have the option of buying two machines. One is a rotary hook design and the other (different) machine is an oscillating hook design. There is a slight premium for the machine with the rotary hook design, and I am wondering if there is any reason to pay extra for the feature. Although if you're sure what I'm asking, then just I'm not sure why you expressed confusion in your post ;)
  5. Would you pay extra money (~$70 more) for a rotary hook bobbin over an oscillating bobbin? If so, why?
  6. http://replayxd.com/product/prime-x/ I guess this went fairly unnoticed with the Hero4 coming out. It seems like they're trying to differentiate themselves with lens quality rather than 4k. DSE - how much of the CinePrimeX lens stuff is advertising buzzwords and how much of it is useful?
  7. I started jumping in Wisconsin (-25 is common there), and I have a few hundred jumps in those kind of conditions. I actually kinda prefer jumping in a harsh winter because then you know everyone dumb enough to be on the plane is hardcore and really loves the sport ;) Do I have to get a taxi to get to the tunnel? Is there public transportation between the DZ and Moscow? I'm thinking that I might spend a weekend jumping and a few days during the week at the tunnel so I would only be making a couple of longer trips and I don't mind if it's super inconvenient. Is it possible to spend half a day at the tunnel and then travel to Moscow for the rest of the day and stay in Moscow for the night using public transportation? Or should I plan on just staying near the tunnel?
  8. I just found out that I have to use up some vacation time before the end of the year, so I'm on the hunt for an affordable dz and an affordable tunnel within a few hours flight of where I'm at. As best as I can tell Kolomna fits those bills better than any other place, the only question that remains is how much jumping goes on in the brutal Russian winter?
  9. Of course there isn't - but there is a problem with viewing the necessary training as an annoyance and not giving the process any thought.
  10. If you had any future in proximity flying, you would have known to use a hamster as a test dummy first. The dude above me summarized your options well. The only thing I would add is that people who just can't wait to "get their first 200 jumps behind them" tend to be shitty skydivers (and therefore shitty base jumpers) because they don't have an attitude that is conducive to building a good foundational skill set.
  11. Kinda sorta... I'm the communications officer for a nonprofit. But my services are definitely still for hire if it means I get free schwag from one of the wingsuit manufacturers. I don't care which one - I'll happily shill for whoever is the highest bidder... (Although now that I think about it I might be partial to Squirrel just because they are basically a one stop shop for everything. So Gerdes! If you're following this thread - I'm offering you full rights to use the slogan "so little drag even Fred Phelps approves" to advertise for the colugo2 if you give me a strong light, an ibex, a C2, a funk, a sumo and one of them epicenes. And throw in a few copies of the great book of base so that I can be extra prepared to take all that free schwag off a cliff.) And wow. The whole internet. I'm speechless. I guess I'll put it into my trophy case next to my varsity curling team memorabilia from high school and numerous baton twirling championship plaques from college.
  12. Actually, everything Squirrel makes is stitched together with thread woven from the plucked pubic hair of playboy centerfolds and their leading edge has so little drag that it's the official wingsuit of the Westboro Baptist Church (apparently they don't know about the pubic-hair based E-thread). A little known feature of their Rapid Arm Deployment is that it automatically forces your arms to correct off heading openings, and each suit is magnetized opposite the hemisphere in which its owner resides in so that it actually repels the ground, making proximity flying in a Squirrel suit much safer than the in competition (if you're jumping in the wrong hemisphere you can still benefit from the magnetic repulsion feature by back flying any particularly gnarly proxy lines). So yea, you're wrong. Squirrel FTW!
  13. I use the manual setting to get the exposure within the ballpark at a fairly narrow aperture and a fast shutter speed (f9ish at 1/1000ish) and then I leave the ISO on auto so that it can adapt a little if clouds come in and change the lighting. Focus area is set to wide and continuous focus. The only other thing to think about is that 11 frames per second can overload the buffer fairly easily so make sure you get the fastest card you can get. My SD card is rated to 95 mb/sec and I've found that shooting 12mpxl JPEGs lets me shoot freely. You can also up the resolution to 24 mpxl if you slow the frame rate down to the medium setting. Does anyone else do something different? (Edit to add: I use the 16mm pancake and exit equipment switch as well. As far as I'm concerned there's no reason to jump a DSLR anymore)
  14. Hi people. I have absolutely no idea what has kept this thread going for more than 2100 pages because I haven't really read any of it, but I was reading XKCD's webcomic this morning and I think it might interest you all that he has come up with an answer that will end the debate and uncertainty once and for all: http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/d_b_cooper.png You're welcome. (if you haven't heard about the cult classic movie "The Room", read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room_(film) and watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYRydundnt8)
  15. For me it's mostly a matter of workflow inherent to filming tandems. At this point the go pro produces higher quality footage (which is generally irrelevant because as far as I know most places edit and burn the video to standard definition DVDs anyway), but CX series cameras are better in the tandem environment for all of the following reasons (in no particular order): 1. I can flip open the screen and properly frame my interviews. 2. I can get a bigger, high capacity battery that lasts all day and saves me all the worry the rather anemic go pro battery life causes. 3. It uses a full sized SD card that is more easily accessible and much harder to lose track of than a microSD card. If your DZ is busy enough, being able to write your name on your SD card and not have to fumble with opening a go pro case is really important when you are in a huge hurry and halfhazardly tossing your chips at the video editor. 4. I can easily review footage. 5. I can control the camera and see it's recording status via a Hypeye. 6. The menus are way better on the CX cameras. 7. The microphone is better on the CX cameras. Now go pro might be getting to a point where some of these concerns are reduced. You could get a go pro, buy the LCD pack, wait for that new indicator from Hypoxic to come out, keep your cellphone on your person all day to easily navigate the menus via the app, buy a bunch of batteries and an external charger and just switch things out on every jump for peace of mind, and just be careful with the micro SD cards, but that would probably cost you around 800 bucks, probably more. Alternatively you stick with what works and can probably just pick up a CX150 for a hundred bucks off ebay and invest another 200 or so in a cheap mount, a hypeye, a lens and a couple of spare batteries.
  16. It can definitely be done, but osteoporosis is a concern with paraplegics and there is a huge difference between a paraplegic who has remained fit an active and a paraplegic who hasn't been strengthening his/her bones via exercise, diet and stressing the tissue. Age is probably a factor as well. I'm fused L4-T12.
  17. I don't know - 90mph is fast and look at what ski jumpers can do with similar speeds. If he's tracking through his swoop, wouldn't it make sense for him to de-arch?
  18. I'm not sure that I'm reading this correctly, but it sounds like you're saying that he's essentially tracking through his swoop. That's fucking crazy, and very cool if it's the case.
  19. It's my experience that I actually see this a lot with bigger groups with mixed experience levels. The leader is usually on his/her back, spending the first ten seconds doing an intentionally pathetic track and focusing on heading/levels before gradually picking up the pace.
  20. Are you using it for stills? How do you rig up a bite/blow/tongue switch to it?
  21. Put up a review whenever you switch to the A6000, please. It's only a matter of time before everyone switches to mirror less, but it seems like everyone's been holding back because what's out there still doesn't quite offer all the features a free fall photographer needs. What about the A6000 made you change your mind? Just the superior autofocus? Does it have a minijack for a biteswitch or does it need to be modded? Edit to add: Also, is there a way to easily turn off both viewfinders in order to conserve battery? According to DPReview it's only rated for 420 shots on a charge - that may not last very long if you're the spray and pray type.
