They had yet to do a suspension base jump yet, and Stas was still pretty new to base jumping and skydiving. I think he had about 30 skydives and 10 base jumps at the time He also had some crazy homemade russian base canopy. The canopy was some old nine cell skydiving canopy that they had cut the two end cells off of to make it a seven cell, then they put a couple of vents in it. It was fucking crazy for sure. Anyway we hung out together in thailand for a few months with some other highly experienced jumpers and riggers who tok them under their wings and got him some better gear and helped him progress with his base jumping. We spent a lot of time discussing the possibility of doing a suspension base jump and how it could even be pulled off. I think by the end of it we had concluded that the safest way to do it would be a direct bag off a bridge using a round canopy, with one of those lanyards that keep the risers together incase one disconnects (think these were common on belly mount reserves? if anyone know what I'm talking about) Then have another lanyard connected to a climbing harness as a back up in case one or all the hooks ripped out of the skin. my experience is that I have about 800 jumps on safires, currently loaded around 1.5 on a 129 and really, doing 270s on that is kind of scary. You really need to be right on the money to get a good swoop on it without any inputs, but it is forgiving and recovers very fast when you find yourself low. Is it though? Yes. We have previously been lulled into a concept that Ebola, while amazingly deadly, is also very self limiting since it kills the victim before it can spread too far. That kept it contained within small villages when it broke out there. Entire villages died, but that's where it stopped. We had gotten to a place of complacency with that thinking. Now that it has spread farther, it CAN spread farther still. IMHO thats exactly what the planet needs. Something to knock the population back a few billion people. Do what makes you happy. Fuck what everyone else thinks. My story is pretty similar, except that I have little interest in ever working full time as a jumper. I had a 6 figure job at the age of 23, as a welder. I wanted to jump all the time and travel more. So I did it. I just chose to work less, live within my means, and do whatever the hell I wanted. Having a trade makes it easy to pick up short term well paying contract type work to keep the finances somewhere above zero. In the past 12 months I have travelled around the world jumping and doing other fun stuff having only been employed for 4 months total. I can't afford to do as many jumps as I would like to do but thats part of the sacrifice. I am also homeless, have zero financial liabilities, no car, no rent, no student loans. I am very happy with my lifestyle choices, I have a lot of fun and have experienced a lot of things I would never had the chance to do if decided to stay in northern alberta working in the oil patch. ONE thing I really wish I did differently when I was young and stupid was to set up some kind of a passive income, like having a rental property. MY advice to you would be to do everything you can to get you house paid for in full, destroy all of you debt.
