  2. The good ole NRA. Yes I have noticed the power they have.. even on Fox news.

... Surely though if your on a no fly list you should not own a gun

and every gun owner should have background checks (no gun show exemption)

........... and why the need for civilians to have military style ie M 16s etc

We prob go too far the other way here we cannot even have a taser at home or pepper spray at home for self protection.

So we have baseball bats and hammers under our beds.

Having said above I have never felt unsafe in the USA Disneyworld Vegas etc. Memphis was little seedy but felt safe around Graceland.

Do most of you folk on here own a handgun ???

  3. Then why was my jumping ended at Skydive Nagambie in Australia by the CI Don Cross for asking as to why the student rigs did not have Skyhooks. I expected support form Mr BOOTH over this but got nothing. banned from ever jumping there !!! (For asking questions)

I was ahead of my time.. again Soon skyhooks will be on every student rig. Like in 1981 when jumpers laughed at me when I said automatic opening devices will be standard on rigs... AAD mandatory in Australia now !!!

  4. As I am australian I will not vote but am amazed with a country of 300 million folk you could not come up with better candidates than this. You have many fine people over there(I know I have traveled to the USA 8 times)

One thing I do not get is why are you scared of free health care(works here OK)

and why pay your minimum wage $7.50 more like $20 here. Maybe if the minimum wage was raised you could get rid of that awful tipping gratutity practice. GREAT PLACE TO VISIT love yanks

  5. when your laws will not even ban folk who are on the no fly list or terror watch list from buying guns there is no hope.

When you have background checks but they do not apply to gun shows there is no hope.

When you allow folk to buy Miiltary style guns to keep in the suburbs there is no hope

I understand the self defence thing in the USA but some common sense should apply. I carry a hand gun at work for protection of myself and the community in Australia and would not have it any other way but you folks in the USA have to tighten laws at least.

  6. To jump out of a plane.. period everything else was a bonus. Met some really good good people... and a few dick heads but that's the same every where.

First jumps in 1981 in a club environment (read not for profit) took a long time to be accepted in that format but once you were in .. you were really in.

Again jumped again in 2008 in the era of commercial skydiving. Different experience..(Yes safer and better equipment and training) I thought the CI and staff cared about me and welcomed me with open arms but in reality it was only to get my money. (largest DZ in Victoria) as I did a lot of tandems. They dropped me like a ton of bricks cause I asked about skyhooks. Got told by email I was banned from AFF... not even the courtesy of face to face or a phone call.. very disappointing. !! (AFTER 19 TANDEMS)

My faith was returned when I went to Australian skydive and found CI Ralph.. a kind and generous man who really cared.

My story the way I saw it, others will disagree (squeak)

  7. Enjoy yourself mate. If ever in Victoria try Skydive Nagambie or Australian skydive near Bendigo. I did some jumps at both and both are great Drop zones with l good people and CIs(Don and Ralph) Enjoy your adventure

  8. yeah me just did not fit in. Did ok with jumps but folk took a set against me cause I happened to have an opinion. It was fun but nil interest in ever doing it again particulary at my last DZ (skydive nagambie)

For me it appears to me a single persons sport. The amount of money it cost and time it consumed I do not know how one can maintain a decent marriage (unless married to a jumper). Selfish to spend that much money when one has a wife and kids. Nothing to show for it except memories and the odd video.

What finished it off for me was I got pearl harbored from by CI (banned for asking too many questions) it was the best of times and the worst of times ) Still supporting skyhooks

  9. sounds like the experience I had at Skydive Nagambie Australia.. ay Don

ieEach time I ask questions I kind of get the brush off and questions are left un-answered or I get treated like I'm stupid for asking certain questions. Yes people are nice and if engaged they are polite but that is about it. This has made it very difficult to get the training and support needed.

  11. Read books, ask instructors questions, watch other students land (and make mistakes), learn about their problems, and learn more than just enough to get by.

I did that!! read lots of books asked lots of question and then got banned from AFF (me thinks I researched equipment like skyhook too much) its a fact that if you ask too many questions its easier to just get rid of you..(At NAGGAS anyway) AM I RIGHT DON !!

***Hi! Total newbie here. Four tandems last year. AFF & A-License this year (Hopefully!).

Through my DZ's Facebook group, I've been able to I would encourage you to become a student of skydiving, instead of a student skydiver.

What do I mean? Make it your goal in life to understand (as much as possible) what you are doing before you go out and do it.

Not long ago I was visiting a DZ and heard someone ask for a gear check. The person giving the gear check asked a question about the RSL. The jumper could not explain what it was or when it might need to be disconnected. I don't know if the jumper was a solo practicing student or a newly licensed jumper. In either case, they should have known what the RSL was and how it might save them or kill/hurt them.

If a person was equally ignorant about how to fly and land the canopy (as much as this one was about the RSL), the odds of such a person getting hurt would be much higher than the average. Don't be like that.

Read books, ask instructors questions, watch other students land (and make mistakes), learn about their problems, and learn more than just enough to get by.

    Have fun.

  12. Congrats Bill. Unfort my devotion to your invention skyhook ruined my jumping at skydive nagambie in Australia. (got banned at AFF for asking some uncomfortable questions like why no skyhook on student rig ?) never got an answer to that one.

But thanks for inventing it !!!

  13. What lies mate all true !! It may surprise you that i still like and respect Don and Louise. Just did not agree with Dons decision.... thats life !!

  14. I did 19 tandems before AFF. That was way too many. I reckon about 3 is right. By then you are used to getting out a perfectly good plane and free fall holds no surprises. I wish the place I went too insisted I do AFF after 3 tandems rather than take my money... but business is business I suppose... and they did nothing wrong.

I went to another melbourne DZ the boss (Bridgewater)... Ralph, said he never lets customers do more than 2 tandems. I kinda wish I went to Ralph in the first place.... things may have turned out different. too late now.

***It seems that there are a few fatalities every year caused by someone getting fixated and losing track of time/altitude. Trying to fix a spinning line twist malfunction is another one that people way too often get fixated on and end up low with limited options.

About a dozen years ago, I witnessed a skydiver who dislocated both shoulders falling on a building formation. He's walking the earth today because he had an AAD. I and a couple of other "old school guys" installed AADs in our containers shortly thereafter. Such a change of mindset over the last 15 to 20 years such that it almost seems irresponsible jumping without an AAD. The reasons why not to have one went away with the introduction of digital processing units, other than the cost. You simply can not plan for every scenario, something totally out of your control can render you unconscious or otherwise unable to deploy a canopy.

    Exactly......couldn't agree more.

At the DZ I jumped at (Skydive Nagambie in Australia .. a good dropzone) AADs were compulsory. Might be time everyone followed that. A reserve is compulsory so should an AAD. I remember at ist jump course at bridgewater we were told an Australian champion was saved by AAD. Seems she could not find her reserve handle after cutaway. if that sort of thing can happen to such an experienced jumper it can happened to anyone.

obviously the swoopers need a special aad. Compulsory AAds and RSLs would save many lives every year.

However you good folk in the USA have a fear about the government telling you what you must do.. but thats a different story. I love the USA and its people by the way.. visit often. but you have a different mindset over there.

  16. very sad. he was great !! Cannot get my head around it but I never walked a mile in his shoes. Some celeb you feel like you know. Was gobb smacked when I heard the news..... just like when I heard Elvis and John LENNON died as well. Entertainers are such a big part of our lives (or most of us anyway)

Thanks Robin for the great entertainment ( I hope you knew how popular your are in Australia )

    Just hard to fathom !!

  17. For me it was easy. The decision was made for me. Did not fit in which was my fault. Made enemies on line. (mainly my fault) It was meant to be. Did 66 jumps without a scratch and met some really good folk like Ralph and Patrik.

Happily retired with good memories... nil interest in jumping again. A couple of folk i would like to get even with. but not worth the energy. It was fun and a good experience. Thanks Ralph Patrik Wooka Boo to the max Don Sarah and KGB (but they would say the same to me)

It is my belief and the statistics support this belief - Skyhooks are a very good thing for the majority of the people in our sport. They save lives and more and more people are getting on board with them. And that's a good thing.

    ^This.

So I have been right since 2008 when I started promoting them.. and paid the price (esp at nagambie Australia) But its nice to be right! Will be as common as AAD in a few years !!
