The silver plate is from "MARKSTRÖMS GULDSMEDS AB K G" silversmiths (KGMGA/B) in Sweden (1913-1992). It was made in 1927 (A7) in Upsalla, Sweden. Hj is a Swedish Abbreviation for the first name 'Hjalamar'. I have no information of a town of Bred in Sweden, but it translates to wide-ranging (babylfish). Discrepancy in the dates may be due to teh plate being made later and added to the item, with the silversmith merely dating his piece of work. There is only one side being told because we, as an organization, cede the 'big media' space to whoever is doing the reporting. The folks at Lodi could have contacted local media, who would likely love the opportunity to get their reporting national distribution. They could have contacted the national networks and made a statement. USPA could have done the same. Silence from our side of the fence is just as bad as the incomplete reporting that has become the norm in main stream media. The sacrifice of the complete story to be the 'first' with the news has become the norm. To try and make it touch the primeval fears to get people to watch is an effective means to increase viewership. With this environment, those responsible for providing media with the fodder for this type of incident have to be proactive in letting the organization governing the sport know the full details and likely media reach of each incident. That way USPA (or CSPA or FAI) can be knowledgeable enough to become a source to speak on incidents to the media. Without our reaching out to the media as an organization, they will not look to us as a counterpoint source and keep writing whatever will sell papers. Hiding it from 'public eye' is precisely what will sink us in the end. Like any other industry, there will be screw ups. The key is to be open about them and let folks know how we dealt with the issue to restore trust in the industry. I did the sky-ride (no relation) thing a couple years ago throwing a rig on the back of the bike and riding off for about 5 weeks. I'd ride until I hit a major highway, flip a coin and keep riding in a random direction for a while them look at a map and see what was interesting and where I could jump before sundown. Sometimes it was a landmark or museum and a night under the stars, others was riding up just in time for sunset and night jumps. Keep an eye on the weather and let that help ya choose daily locations and camp sites, tho, skydivers are great folks and I found myself on many a new best skydiver buddy couch when rains closed in. Take pictures, get names and contact info in your log book, find someplace you never thought of seeing before, forget schedules and just enjoy being on the road.
