  1. The International Skydiving Museum & Hall of Fame is proud to honor the 100-Way Canopy Formation World Record Team with the museum Path of Excellence Award. The presentation will be made at the 2019 Hall of Fame Celebration at Skydive Perris, Perris, California, on Friday afternoon, October 18, prior to the Welcome BBQ. There will also be a tribute jump honoring the awardee. Many groups, companies and teams have played a prominent role in the growth and development of our sport with their exceptional contribution in the form of innovation, performance and/or competitive excellence, leadership, education, safety, sponsorship and/or philanthropy, aviation, design/invention and/or manufacturing, sport promotion, and photograph/videography. The Path of Excellence Award is specifically for entities – groups, companies, organizations or teams for significant contribution(s) of enduring high value to the world of skydiving and is a prestigious award in both name and distinction. Award nominees are voted on by supporters of the museum including ambassadors, counselors, trustees, members of the Hall of Fame, and major donors. On November 21st, 2007 the world’s largest canopy formation was built over the Florida Skydiving Center in Lake Wales, a record that still stands today. The formation was so large that the Miami Air Traffic Control Center monitored the formation on radar to keep other aircraft from coming into close proximity to the formation. The formation weighed 20,388 pounds and was 290 feet tall and 175 feet wide. In comparison, a 747-400 jet is only 231 feet long and the Wright brother’s first flight was not quite one third the distance as the formation is tall. Even though the 100 way formation was built in 2007, the journey to this record started 6 years earlier. It all began at the end of 2001 when Chris Gay was talking to a couple of friends about the last world record of 46 skydivers back in 1994. The conversation started with questions of how difficult it is to organize such an event and ended with an agreement to organize a 50 way canopy formation the following year. Little did they know this would lead to a 5 year road to the 100 way Canopy Formation Largest Formation World Record. The first event was in 2002 with the goal of setting a new US record. With the help of Betty Hill of the Florida Skydiving Center and Paul Fayard of Fayard Enterprises, the organizers had an outstanding place to host the event and a great fleet of aircraft to jump from. When not only 1, but 5 50-way canopy formations were built during the same day and an unofficial world record 56-way, it was realized with proper design, training and organization that the elusive triple digit 100 way canopy formation could be possible. The most difficult part would be convincing the canopy formation community that these ideas were necessary. However, following such a successful event gave the leverage and credibility that was needed to convince the community that changes were needed in technique and equipment. Even so it was an uproar when the announcement was made for standard slick jumpsuits, line sets and a given wing loading of 1.30-1.375 based on your position in the formation. It was explained for the safety of the group anyone wanting to be on the 2003 64 way world record attempts would have to sign and abide by a contract. This event was, once again, a complete success of not only multiple 64-way formations in the same day, but a 70-way formation the following day as well. After that success, the group saw the importance of correct engineering of the formation, proper techniques and standardized equipment. During the next couple of attempts, the design and engineering of the formation was critical in order to have a stable formation upon its completion. This meant it maybe quasi stable during part of the build and would require the jumpers to learn to fly it during this phase. This was achieved by using tight jumpsuits in the center of the formation and baggy jumpsuits on the outside of the formation. Also, standard line trims and lengths were required. Lastly, learning where to place the older and slower canopies versus the newer or faster canopies. A better way to communicate the starburst breakdown to the jumpers was also needed and for this task Kirk Vanzandt volunteered. Performance Designs help in keeping their PD Lightning demo parachutes available and also assisted with quick turnaround for repairs that were critical over the years and during training and the actual events. Rusty Vest inspected and assessed each Lightning parachute at these events to place each canopy in the best place in the formation based on wear and age. The above changes along with newer training and docking techniques and standard wing loading helped build great flying 81 and 85 way canopy formation in 2005 and a 100 way canopy formation in 2007. The 100 Way World Record utilized five aircraft, the first aircraft dropped 9 jumpers from 20,000 feet. The second dropped 27 jumpers from 18,000 feet. The third dropped 29 jumpers from 16,000 feet and the final two aircraft dropped the remaining 35 jumpers from 13,000 feet. The formation took approximately 11 minutes and 30 seconds to build and was held for 12 seconds. It was completed on the fifth attempt and captured on HD video by seven videographers from around the world. The formation consisted of jumpers from 14 countries including 56 from the United States, 7 from Australia, 7 from Germany, 6 from the Netherlands, 6 from Great Britain, 5 from Russia, 3 from Canada, 2 from Brazil, 2 from Egypt, 2 from France, 1 from Argentina, 1 from Belarus, 1 from Belgium and 1 from Finland. Special thanks to Kirk Vanzandt, Betty Hill, Paul Fayard, Rusty Vest, and Performance Designs for their support and assistance with this journey to the 100-way. The videographers that captured the incredible images that showcased the 100 Way CF World Record to the world were Bruno Brokken, Gustavo Cabana, JC Colclasure, Norman Kent, Keith MacBeth, Pam Pangburn, and Bryan Scott. 2002 US Record 50Ways and Unofficial World Record 56Way Organizers: Chris J. 10. Sorry! Completely missed this thread. We've done #2, but number 1 is a bit of a challenge - due to the design. But I'll take a look and see whether perhaps we can pull through the newest threat title to below the forum title and see how it looks.
  11. The vampire sukhoi 3 (SU3) has been designed for pilots who want the maximum proximity flying performance combined with high powered glide and speed. The SU-3 is a high performance continuation of the tried and tested vampire series. The wing profile on the SU3 has been optimized to allow maximum glide, while still having the same free range of movement and agility vampire users are used to. Its a suit purpose built for basejumping and proximity flying. The leading edge has been further refined to allow for maximum control, with a new airlocked inlet on all wing surfaces, and a newly designed method for pressurizing the tail deflector. The wingroot has been altered in location to allow for better low drag characteristics and handling, without any changes in the actual size of the overall size of the wing, compared to previous models. A change in the design of the inner ribs in the wing optimizes the wing shape to form the cleanest profile possible. In terms of ease of use, the suit has also seen a change in zipper layout and length, allowing for easier gearup, together with new optional storage pouches on the suit, for the more demanding Alpine jumps. Also see our more specific Alpine model for even more tailored climb and fly solutions. For BASE jumping, the suit is designed for short starts, with great glide, also making it the ideal choice for performance and agility races. It also offers optional added storage space for those more demanding alpine jumps. The smooth leading edge, thin wing profile, and low drag optimization make the suit easy to fly, with a level of agility not before seen in big surface wingsuits. The addition of the exclusive Phoenix-Fly Fins give the suit a real edge for jumps demanding the highest levels of control with steep banking and carving turns. The arm wing and tapered sleeve design allow for a good accessible pull, making it suitable for use with normal BOC deployment. Meaning you can deploy at any speed, angle or dive, with or without a flare. The SU3 is the follow up in the successful Vampire line. The suit features a unique rigid, 3D shaped leading edge, unlike any suit currently on the market. Specially designed booties and fins, formed with a special low drag profile, enhancing maneuverability. The special inlet hole creates an improved lateral stability that allows for sharp carving turns, flying the suit like its on tracks. The suit has a fine tuned balance, optimized for glide and speed. Setting various records as well as winning various BASE races across the globe in both speed and precision, the SU3 is currently the fastest and most agile terrain flying suit on the market, and can be found roaming the forests and mountains near you. Due to the large wing surface area the SU3 is not suitable for low experience pilots. We recommend a MINIMUM of 250 wingsuit jumps before trying the SU3 and experience on intermediate class suits.

    Rafale

Phoenix-Fly is proud to announce the Rafale A unique new model, exploring new ground with large surface wingsuit acrobatics. A suit designed with high performance flying for both skydiving and basejumping in mind. Offering users a single platform for short start, high agility, high performance flying in base, but also having the range to play around with acrobatics, ppc, backflying, flocks, flares and XRW in the skydiving environment. Constructed with knowledge gathered from over 10 years of domination in the acrobatic arena. A hybrid suit, stemming from design features derived from the SU II and Strix have created the most agile ‘large surface all rounder’ on the market. The combination of increased surface area, perfect streamline, tight fit around arms/legs/body and aggressive pitch, create a suit with a naturally high speed, but ability to also perform well when flown at lower forward speeds. High internal pressure creates a perfectly inflated and clean airfoil that performs well at any angle. A pre-formed leading edge, as pioneered by Phoenix-Fly, creates the smoothest airflow, and most responsive flying, while still allowing for a clean and trouble free deployment. Custom designed grippers allow for a perfect grasp on the wing, with the wrist at a comfortable angle, to create a merge of body and wingsuit that allows for most feedback and control. Especially in backflying the Rafale will raise eyebrows with its rock solid inflation, and ease of control. Rolling and transitioning like a small wingsuit due to the wing following the movement of its pilot down to the small details, due to the suit fitting the human form like a second skin.

    Strix

The Strix 2 is aimed at advanced wingsuit pilots who want a high performance all round suit for skydiving and basejumping. The strix is a hybrid design based on our experience with the vampire range. Offering high agility, but also offering backflying and basic acrobatic flight characteristics. The Strix offers a good balance of performance and fun, ideal for those wanting a wingsuits with a bigger surface area, yet still retaining the flight characteristics that make a suit easy and fun to fly. The surface area of the Strix was designed with speed and performance in mind, while retaining the agility Phoenix-Fly suits are known for. Proven top of its class in high precision flying. On the Strix 2 we added to the inflated cells with an improved airlock system. Like its predecessor, tailwind inflation while backflying remains rigid and without flutter, regardless of angle or speed. We also modified the internal foam leading edge, to form the ultimate knife edge, cutting into the relative wind while providing maximum lift. A 3 degree change in arm wing sweep gives the suit a steeper angle of attack, resulting in a higher flying speed and increased flare capability. An overall increase in flying speed and handling without an increase in surface size. Notable the foam edge does not inhibit deployment or limit access to the BOC in any way. Safety is always top priority. Never letting customer safety take a backseat in our design philosophy. The suit offers smooth flying and trouble free inflation on both belly and back. For base the high performance, as well as smooth and easy starts make the suit an ideal choice for those looking for a big surface all-rounder. The Strix has a lots of range at the high end for when you want to fly fast and flat. Optional air locked back vents together with a carefully balanced suit, ensure excellent back flying performance. The Strix is also the perfect platform for camera flyers and/or XRW pilots who are looking to expand their range. Be it on belly or back the suit is easy to fly, at incredible forward speeds. The Strix is made to the same high standards as all Phoenix-Fly products, utilizing high grade materials and robust double stitching seam construction (as used for canopy manufacturing). Like all suits in the Phoenix-Fly range, The Strix will be custom made to order, tailored to your measurements. It comes standard with chest pocket, backfly inlets and performance foam. Optional are 5/10 base soles and tail, leg and side pockets for (alpine) base and equipment storage during flight. We advise a minimum of 200 wingsuit jumps for those interested in flying the Phoenix-Fly Strix, with transitional experience on intermediate class suits recommended.

    Magister

The phoenix-fly magister is a wingsuit designed specifically for both lighter wingsuit pilots, and suitable for formation flying as well as more dynamic acrobatics. It’s gripperless design makes it ideal for more agile forms of flying. In larger flocks the Magister will enable lighter pilots to fly comfortably with others in intermediate sized suits on both belly and back. Featuring a small arm wing profile and the larger legwing sized like the Havok Carve, the Magister provides an increased forward drive, without the added drag a bigger suit usually presents for lighter users. This provided a perfect solution for those who have battled to choose between a Shadow and the Havok Carve. The Magister comes into its own with dynamic aerobatics. Featuring a slightly steeper angle of attack than the Shadow due to the larger leg wing and increase armwing sweep, it generates impressive power to support dynamic flying, and is particularly suited to freefly-inspired acrobatics. We advise a minimum of 35 wingsuit jumps for those interested in flying the Phoenix-Fly Magister.
  15. The phantom has long been the best all round wingsuit available on the market for both skydiving and base and is designed with formation flying and progressing pilots in mind. The suit has an incredible performance range, easy to fly at any speed in a formation, solo or while doing agile acrobatics. Optimized for safety with the progressing wingsuit pilot in mind. The suit wing surfaces are designed to put the pilot in right angle of attack for maximum performance, meaning minimal effort for maximum results. The suit features dual inflation, meaning it’s also a great choice for backflying and acrobatics. From the day it was released, the Phantom has been creative ‘go to’ suit in everyone’s gearbag. For the new Phantom Edge 2 we refined the armwing with more finetuned aerodynamic wing shape, providing more lift, and giving the suit a distinct edge in performance and agility. We have further changed the zipper length for easier access. The suit has an incredible performance range; and is docile and predictable whilst flying with the formations, making close proximity flying easier. At break off the suit can be trimmed out and offers excellent forward speed with a very flat glide, helping to guarantee you have clear airspace to deploy your canopy, or get maximum distance from the cliff you exit from. The suit comes standard with performance foam, chest pocket and backfly inlets. Optional are 5/10 Base Soles, camera mounting hole, and various stash options for base such as side, bootie and tail pockets. The Phantom Edge 2 is an intermediate wingsuit, suitable for pilots looking to progres onward from their first wingsuit flight. The suit works as an ideal learner and step up to bigger suits, but even moreso, as a platform for formation flying, flocking and entry level wingsuit basejumping. Easy acces pull. High quality construction. The Phantom Edge 2 offers expert performance at entry level ease of flying.

    Shadow Edge

The shadow edge wingsuit is extensively used by athletes at the artistic flying wingsuit competitions and it is the premium acrobatic-machine available on the market. The phoenix-fly acro wingsuit was the very first true acrobatic wingsuit available on the market, featuring rear inlets for back flying and rw style leg grips for docking. Our 2015 update from the tried and tested Shadow 2 features refined aerodynamic wing shape and improved inlet design, giving the suit an edge in performance and agility. Today our acrobatic wingsuit offering is the Shadow Edge and it builds on the incredible versatile Phantom 3 platform and lessons learned with the Acro design. Packing all the power of the Phantom 3, the Shadow Edge provides the pilot with optimal agility and manoeuvrability due to straight line wing lines and hands-free flying position. The Shadow Edge allows for very intuitive flying, performing sharp turns, solid carves, rolls, dives and swoops. While directly targeting the acrobatic flying discipline, Shadow 2 also offers limitless opportunities for pilots interested in flocking, freestyle flying and B.A.S.E. The suit is easy to control during exit and flight, and the gripperless armwing design make for an easy pull. The Phoenix-Fly Shadow Edge is rated for all experience levels and suitable for use in first flight courses.
  17. The Alpine 3 takes the best from the SU-T and SU3 platforms, be it with the classic front leg zippers for easier unzipping or added performance increase with the PF unique deflector hole and Fins, but specifically tailored for high alpine jumps. It has our unique Ultra/Ultra Light material, creating the lightest big surface suit ever. It has 10 custom storage pockets all over the suit, allowing the transport of large amounts of ropes, clothing and additional climbing gear. The suit has airlocks for max pressurization, and extra large inlets to allow fast pressurization at higher altitudes. The Alpine 3 comes with a custom strap inside the bootie to allow for the use of big climbing shoes, while retaining tight fit and control also when wearing normal footwear. Always providing the user with a tight fitting bootie on exit and during flight without any risk of slip or unwanted movement. The suit also features a thicker rib design, creating more volume, and resulting in less arm fatigue while maintaining its easy pull characteristics. For those wishing less pressure inside the armwing, there are pressure adjustment zippers. The suit features a wider sleeve design, with a thinner leading edge to accommodate for mountaineering clothing, yet retaining the accessible BOC.

    Epicene

The EPICENE is specifically designed to deliver consistent and reliable openings while wingsuit skydiving. For us, this parachute has been a game-changer, and is now overwhelmingly the parachute of choice for the world's best wingsuit pilots. The EPICENE is based on the same design tenets that make BASE jumping canopies reliable. Released in 2014, it now has a proven track record and has gained a reputation for the best openings in wingsuit skydiving, period. A common sensation during the opening process of many parachutes is the stage when the parachute seems to be "searching" for the final heading that it will settle on. The EPICENE opens with minimal yaw-axis search, and delivers the most consistent heading performance of any parachute we have tested. We believe the EPICENE concept is the future of wingsuit skydive parachute design, and some of the world's best skydivers agree: Andy Farrington, Noah Bahnson, Mike Swanson, TJ Landgren, Luke Aikins, Jeffro Provenzano, Katie Hansen, Petter Jönsson, and the Squirrel Team all jump the EPICENE by choice.

    JFX 2

Maximise the good times and minimize the risk with a super playful crossbraced wing that cranks the fun up to 11. The JFX 2 is the go-to canopy to start your swooping journey or do-it-all wing with power for days. The original JFX is already so good at what she does; opens beautifully, is fun to hoon around in the sky, and gives you the choice of a gentle straight in landing with lots of flare power or a full blown hissing swoop. Version 2.0 hasn't been a radical redesign. The JFX 2 stays true to all the things you love, but now has all the kickass features you know and want: Powerband, mini-ribs and sail loaded ribs. Think crossbraced performance with Crossfire type ease. Cranking turns, raging swoops, gentle touchdowns...the JFX 2 can do it all and do it well. For pilots wanting to expand their skills, and those flying small elliptical 9-cells who couldn't be bothered with a crossbraced canopy before now - this is your wing. You'll want to load her up slightly (think 1.8 to 2.8) and she'll let you throw her around in the air and on the ground. Her perfect combo of effortless control and go-anywhere performance is sure to put a smile on your face.
