  1. Well that's a bit disconcerting. I am planning my first rig from here in Baghdad. I had decided on a Smart Reserve and Pilot and was considering a straight Aerodyne rig. Then, I contacted them about a military discount and they told me to go to a dealer. Not exactly solicitous, but I understood. Now, I find out I might get unresponsive customer service? I can't drive there and poke them in the eye like I could if I was in the States. I have to reconsider my options at this point. Glad I read this post. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
  2. I'm interested in how this detailed analysis of small points of possible contention obviates the hundreds of eyewitnesses on location at the time of the event and the hundreds of thousands who watched it live on TV? 3. I was really impressed by McCain's VP pick. The best thing I saw in the announcment was this: they spoke about what she has done in office. That is what I have been looking for since the elections began. Obama has spent his time as a Senator running for President. Likewise Clinton. If you look at their voting records, there are way too many NV designations beside their names. That means 'No Vote' or 'didn't do my job' (my characterization). Biden and McCain are long term Senators who have said nothing about what they have done for this country in the decades they have been in office. Nobody seems to have done much; so they want to be promoted to President. Now, we have a VP candidate who has all of the executive experience and quickly points to what she has done during that time. Wow! I like. Now, I have to vote for McCain just to boost his VP's chances of taking over. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. 4. Sorry, friend. Same thing happened to me. I just wanted to mark it off the list. Now, I am collecting my own equipment. For what it's worth, I just wanted to try hang gliding and I now have three gliders in my basement. The hard part is deciding which air sport to do when the weather is right for it. Good luck! 5. Nice. Any estimate when the canopy packing video will be finished? I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
  6. I looked at other DZs before selecting Skydive Alabama. Nobody had anything bad to say about them and there is a reason. They are good people who love the sport and want to help others in the sport. The coaching has always been top notch. There is no doubt they know their stuff and can communicate it well to others. The jumpers there are friendly and helpful as well. I am very happy with my choice of places to train.
  7. OK. That was something stated by another in the thread. I had not actually seen it. If the BSR has no such altitude requirement, I would think a plain language reading would indicate any kind of jump counts (including military). Also, someone was kind enough to PM me about combat altitude jumps. The 800 feet is correct. The 1,250 I quoted is schoolhouse. Many thanks for that. 8. I am curious about the ruling on the military jumps. Someone provided a link to another thread that quoted a response from the USPA. That quote said that all jumps count. No qualification that it had to be within the BSRs. While I agree that being within the BSRs would be good, I can't find where that is specified in the SIM. It isn't even something one can point to as common sense. I have an instructor who went too long attending to a student in peril and had his AAD catch him. Was that not a jump? He made no attempt to deploy his main or reserve. He deployed at 1,000ft. Military combat jumps are doctrinally 1,250ft and often are slightly above that. (Let's face it, the 50 in 1,250 is rather silly) Now, I know this is the lawyer in me, but if all definitions are subject to some other definition, it should be stated. What I mean is, if jumps only count if conducted within all requirements of the BSRs, then it should be stated. As I have seen 'jump' defined within this thread, the commercial airline pilot who puts passengers in emergency parachutes and throws them out the door at 500 feet has just started a skydiving school if the survivors log the jump. (I know there are probably lots of other requirements for a school and the pilot is not an instructor. Don't be tiresome about this.) Personally, it never entered my mind to count my military jumps. Now that I have thought about it, I will probably make a note in my jump log. I made notes of my tunnel time. It is all a record of my experience. I do not, however, intend to argue that my military jumps should count towards my A license. To me, the license is a record of a milestone acheived. It is not some kind of end in itself. In this sport, the journey really is the good part. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. 10. Thanks, guys. I knew someone on here would have the intel. Dave. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
  11. Thanks for the input. Looks like I need to buy a book. Dave. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
  12. Someone from my DZ told me Wings and Mirage offer military discounts. I checked with Wings. They have reduced their 50% discount to 40%. I was told Mirage offers a 35%, but haven't verified that as yet. Does anyone know if others offer a military discount? What about canopy manufacturers or suit manufacturers? Obviously I am a new guy trying to build up his gear. Thanks. Dave. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. 13. I am looking for something instructional on the basics of canopy control. I can't find anything that tells me about using risers for control and what to expect. Any help? Many thanks. 14. Item number 250213065347 Are there any DZs that have a wind tunnel as well? Seems like this would be a great match for training purposes. I would think a ground school that included tunnel time would be pretty popular all by itself and naturally lead to the next step. Maybe someon has tried it and it didn't work. Anyway...there is one for sale on ebay. Just thought I'd throw that out. Dave. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. 15. My daughter and I had a great time. I did a ten minute package and she did four minutes. I was prepping for my first jump. Javier was a great instructor. Everyone there was very helpful and friendly. Top notch operation. Anyone able to tell me how to get the video into a format to post? Thanks. 16. Hey! I just did the tunnel at Orlando. It was prep for my first jump. I have a video. How did you get it in a format to post on youtube? I can copy mine, but haven't figured out how to get it into a more friendly format. Thanks! I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. 17. Newbie question. Why are reserves so often smaller than mains? I would think that if things have gone wrong, one would want the assurance of a larger, more docile canopy. I am thinking that smaller canopies might deploy faster and that might be part of the reason, but am not sure. Thanks for any responses. Dave. 18. I am going to the Orlando area to hang glide this week. I wanted to hit the Orlando tunnel while I am there. I have done groundschool and am an Army parachutist, but the wind has prevented me doing my first true dive. I am looking for suggestions for using the tunnel to make my dives more successful. I have sent this same request to Mr. Bowen. He is listed in the sticky as being the manager of the Orlando tunnel. Basically, I am thinking of purchasing a ten minute block and working it in one to two minute increments over a couple of hours. I have been told that trying to get several minutes at once will make me sore the next day. If it helps your response, I am 40, but in excellent shape from weight lifting, aerobic activity and martial arts. Thanks for any suggestions. Dave. 20. Thanks much for the help. I had some indications that they were the correct answer, but wanted confirmation from someone in the sport. Looking forward to meeting some people at the DZ. Dave. 21. I haven't started AFF yet. I got distracted by hanggliding first. I have a choice of two schools. Both are near me in Alabama. One is Alabama Skydive Centers. The other is Skydive Alabama. Thoughts? Thanks for any help. Dave. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..
