  1. I believe this was also used on older atom PdF rigs. Search the forums for more info. I think they stopped doing it for a reason but can't remember the exact details.
  2. I jump an Xaos 88 27 cell at a wing loading of 1.77. I original wasn't going to go crossbraced when I got it as I didn't thing I be loading it enough and I didn't want to go any smaller in size. But when I test jumped a 98 the openings were so sweet I was hooked. I'm probably not taking advantage of everything that the Xaos has to offer performance wise but I never noticed any downside to flying it at this wingloading. Openings are sweet, stable in turbance "or at least as stable as any other canopy I flown".
  3. I have gotten the "forturn cookie" deloyment quite a few time on my Xaos 27, but it never caused it to spin up on me. I found a posting here suggesting that when your packing just before you wrap the tail around make sure the centre cells comes out further than the slider. I started doing this and while it hasn't solved the problem entirely it has reduced how often it happens. Side note, the xaos 27 is the only crossbraced I ever jumped but it is the nices opening canopy I have every jumped.
  4. As a side note a bigger slider doesn't mean a slow opening. If the slider is to big then more of the canopy when it get out of the bag can inflate before it has to work against the slider. You get a very hard snatch force but the rest of the opening will be quite slow.
  5. You do need to be careful. There was a fatality a while back when a woman in australia had Parachute De France risers on a Javelin container. When she had a pilot chute in toe and because the rings as attached further down on a Javelin the risers didn't release when she cut away. In general you can swap riser but in the case of reverse risers on a javelin and a pilot chute in toe its not good.
  6. I would consider a Double malfunction is where both the main and the reserve are unlandable and the reserve malfunction is not as a result of an entanglement with a malfuncting main. I.e. the jumper performed the deployment procedure and resulting emergency procedure correctly but both canopy malfunctioned.
  7. downsizing the canopy will change glide angle. Canopys are design to have the same characterists over all there sizes but they do vary. A better analogy would be to keep the canopy the same i.e. a saber2 170 and increase the weight under it. Ideally without increasing the surface area of the weight. In this case "from my understanding" the glide angle will remain the same but the forward speed will increase.
  8. Have jumped a 135 and later a 107 for a while, flyhi's description is bang on of my experience with both these canopies. Once they're open they fly nice the trick is to be working constantly during the openings otherwise it will get out of control quickly.
  9. I chew gum the whole time. Although I know I chew it in the plane and after deployment I'm aware I'm chewing again but I have no idea what I do during freefall. Guess I'm too busy trying to fly right to pay attention, but find out sometime though!!
  10. That was kind of my point. I was lucky I was trying to apply the rear in an ideal situation and not trying to correct for anything otherwise it would have bad. I have tried push out since and am a little more confedent that this might help but a good pair of gloves for the job would do any harm either.
  11. Does anybody have any suggestions on a glove type/material that would give better grip on rear risers, as I kind of need gloves on one hand for protecting a bad finger. Already had one close call with my hands slipping down the risers instead of actually pulling on them, was pretty lucky I wasn't trying to dig out of anything!!

    FF vs. Swimming

    Only if the water was moving past you in a constant stream would you be able to maneuver in the same way as you do when you are in Freefall. When you are swimming you have to push again and again to perform a 360 but when you are free flying all you have to do is redirect the air to start and continue you a turn. A pool is really very helpful for learning turns but it’s a comfortable place to practice basic body positions. E.g. You can practice keeping you shoulder and hips in a straight line like you need to do for fall straight down the tube on your head.
  13. "Standard" works for the great majority of skydivers, but it's not what a small group of people interested in building up the greatest amount of speed are looking for. Thinner linesets (HMA), longer risers, and various and sundry other little tricks are what gives the top one or two percentile that little edge in competition. Chuck But surely if the top competitors i.e. the ones on factory team, want a longer recovery arch they would ask the manufactures to lenghten the line and not just stick on longer riser?
  14. II get why longer risers will lengthen the recovery arc and that regular jumper may not need this. But when it comes to jumpers using cross braced canopy where the jumpers intention is more than likely get the best swoop, aren't the canopy’s designed with the riser length in mind. I.e. if the canopy performed better with a longer recovery arc "than it’s current one" it would be manufactured with longer lines? Obviously a jumper can adjust the recover arc length by changing the riser but this effect is due to moving the suspended weight further away from the canopy. The same can be done by lengthening the lines, which from what I understand would also have the effect of allowing the canopy to spread out more. This is something jumpers try to maximize by loosening their chest straps. So I suppose my question is does lengthening the riser just improve the swoop distance for a jumper who’s technique better suits the new flight characterises over the original? “This is meant as a shot at the technique of jumpers with longer risers”.   15. How long did it take to get it? Just ordered a G4 myself and am curious if the 6 to 8 weeks is accurate.
