  1. welcome brand new jumper. out of curiosity, do you feel that this question may have been asked before on this forum ? Perhaps multiple times a month ? if so, a SEARCH function for "First Rig" would reveal pages and pages of info. here's a link for you http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=search_results&search_forum=forum_6&search_type=AND&search_string=%22First+Rig%22
  2. In order of importance, priority factors are safety, durability and performance. Color choice is dead last. If a color I wanted compromised the higher priority items, I wouldn't get it. I'm not saying that black lines don't meet all those criteria. I'm just saying that you shouldn't just order them because they're "cool". You should also ensure that the other factors are also suitable for your canopy and flying style. Look around the dropzone next time you are around. How many of those rigs/canopies/jumpsuits you see were bought with "color is dead last" attitude ? many rigs out there are worth more than a decent used car - you better believe that color is important. Just not from the safety standpoint :) yeah....
  3. I have had this happen with a really ragged out (1000+ jumps) PC and a PC that was too small.
  4. we want proof. or proofs. bring it !
  5. mainstream you can get (I am sure there are more choices than I list, but these are the ones I am aware of ) Dacron : White/Red/Black Microline : white hma : regular (yellowish), black, blue (sometimes called Technora). kevlar - no idea
  6. Here's the quote from : http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3085909 "A straight stitch is used when the sewn area of the loop comes in contact with the canopy fabric on most containers. " the closing loop passes between the folds of the round canopy as you lay it in the container - no freebag or sleeve is used, just like packing a round in a sport packtray.
  7. certain Pilot rigs specify a 301 straight stitch on the closing loop - that's about all that I *think* I heard. I believe the reasoning was that the zigzag does more damage to the canopy, as the loops are seated in the backpad.
  8. From experience I will tell you that it will get a lot worse. When the pile of canopies started touching the ceiling I converted the basement and now all is well. PS - can you explain why you felt that the last two threads you posted needed a fully capitalized title ?
  9. so whats my option :) go to ski shop and get fog cloths? your option is to be a tough russian. but otherwise see what snowmobiles use - they quite fast in damn cold temperatures.
  10. put that stuff on the visor, then stick teh helmet in the fridge for 30 mins - if it hold then it may work :) I doubt it will though, as it will probably freeze on the visor and you'll be looking through stained glass
  11. Butler has been using a Sombrero slider for awhile now too. and show some pretty intense stuff on their site. http://www.butlerparachutes.com/ also a pretty cool video of a C9 with and without a slider : http://www.butlerparachutes.com/C9/C9slider.wmv

  13. just a follow up - craigslist is meant to be a LOCAL classifieds - thus if you use it as intended (and look at the warning on top), your chances of getting scammed on a face to face transaction will be minimal...
  14. good experience. about 3 transaction a year (buying)
  15. you were cited for "creating a hazard or nuisance". That was the statute. but you are still a tool :)
  16. try BadDog. http://www.baddogservices.com/ http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?username=baddog;
  17. Unless there was something that I missed, BASE jumping is legal in all 50 states and the territories. and it has the same legal status in all the other countries that you mention. For example, I have jumped from my friends condo 39th floor balcony in Miami, and landed on public beach. I did that at 4AM with noone present. I doubt any charges would have stuck. People have gotten stopped for jumping from hotel rooms that they rented - the cops usually let them go as there's nothing to charge them with. Basically, it's just an activity that most people are not used to, and the sensationalist media blows it out of proportion causing the "common folk" to have a very skewed opinion. It is 100% legal in Twin Falls, and 100% legal in Moab. The only difference is that the city of TF doesn't cite us for jumping from their bridge which has a pedestrian walkway, while some other cities seems to have an issue with it, while others have "no throwing objects from the bridge" signs. I don't believe TF or IDOT has BASE jumping written in their books - it just does not prohibited it. Ya know, 3 levels - Legal, NOT illegal and Illegal ... The bottom line is that I don't think that there's a single citation written out with a charge of "BASE jumping" . The closest one is probably an Aerial Delivery charge in a National Park, which if you are not familiar with it, is absolute BS invented in the 60s for stopping aerial resupply of squatters.
  18. both skydiving and BASE jumping are bastard children of parachuting. As the overwhelming majority thinks of parachuting as a last chance means of escaping an aircraft :) but like they say : don't BASE jump at the dropzone, and don't skydive from BASE objects. Skyding centers are either businesses or purpose built clubs - for skydiving, NOT BASE. Thus positive attitude towards anything but skydiving should be appreciated, but not expected :)
  19. That is a great reply. With your background, can you give us YOUR stance on the situation ?
  20. In the true heart of "do a search" threads ongoing... DO A SEARCH. Only one pops up - Seville, Spain. Fairly well known dropzone. http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=Seville+skydive
  21. dear Opinionated Statostar. just what percentage of new jumpers with 42 jumps know how to hook up their pilot chute ? And overall, last I checked most modern gear has the PC sewn on the bridle, and the bridle attaches to the canopy. Is it common sense ? Well yeah, if you have been doing it a bunch of times. If you have never looked at it, it may seem a bit more complex. as tbrown is calling everyone SKYGOD for telling people to do a search - YOU my friend are right now acting like one. I will be happy to admit that at 42 jumps while I had a basic idea about how my gear worked and was configured, I certainly had not a fucking clue/skill to put a canopy on risers and be convinced that I did it right.
  22. yes. Because I know they will work and have proven themselves over time. such choices are personal. The OP asked for opinion and reason for the choice. I gave him one.
  23. Dear Tbrown. your rant is as narrow minded to me, as the "do a search" responses are to you. you know why ? Because you are bitching about a personal opinion (preference). The fact that this is a skydiving forum doesn't matter. It can be a AV forum, a MX forum, a BDSM forum - a person will get bitchslapped with "do a search" on ANY forum for asking questions that keep repeatedly getting discussed. I believe what we have for the most part is complacency and lazyness. Why do I think that ? Because I use the search function on daily basis on this, and other forums I frequent. And it works well. And the timers I dont get my answer, or the information seems outdated - I make the post, sometimes in the old thread, sometimes in an new one. And to this day nobody ever seemed to be a dick or told me to do a search. Imagine somebody standing in a store, right next to the price sign and screaming "Can I get some help here ? How much is this item ?"
  24. I'm going to get rather merciless about this. "Search" is a euphemism for "go away kid, you bother me". If this OP's question bothers you, simply refrain from adding your worthless opinion. Nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing you to answer.. it seems like you have as much of a problem with people who tell others to use search about a topic that gets discussed weekly, as those people have a problem with the people who are unable to use search. funny. But given a choice, I'd rather be proactive than complacent. so yeah, OP should have used search. No chew me out, tbrown.
  25. when did they not have a stated life span ? I was not around back then, it'd be a nice fact to know. I do believe they initially stated 10 years and then extended to 12. Anyone ? As far as what I would pick ? Another Cypres2. Just makes me feel more comfortable.
