if you got a 3, it would save me driving to eloy. i need one in my log book if not a 3, why not try for a pac or kodiak? be good for getting things going in the morning, and a novelty for a lot of folks. regardless, i'll be back with co-pilot Jon. and "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." August 2-10 2014, the 47th Annual Lost Prairie Boogie
kingbunky replied to NWFlyer's topic in Events & Places to Jump
i won't make it this year , but if anyone comes across my phone at the fire tower, i'd still like to get it back. it won't work, but i'd like to have it back anyway, it had a nice case on it. Big air sportz canopies (Brian Germain's air locked lotus/samurai/jedei) do quite well in turbulence. Best bet is to stay out of it if you can though "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001

Last stage AFF the hop and pop
kingbunky replied to grumpylittleman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
IAD is instructor assisted deployment. basically the same as static line, but instead of a static line your instructor has your pilot chute in hand and deploys it for you as you leave the aircraft. good for small dzs that don't have static line gear, you just use a normal student rig. Putting together a new (to me) rig, so confusing!
kingbunky replied to mereanarchy's topic in Gear and Rigging
if you are buying all new gear (which i wouldn't recommend for a first rig), you could spend a couple hundred more and get a 253 pd optimum reserve, which would pack as small as a pd 235 (perhaps even another size smaller, but don't quote me). the smaller reserve container size would probably get you into a smaller main container size. but like someone else mentioned, if you call upt, they would be more than happy to help you out. these guys (blutracker.com) have (had?) a good looking product, seems like it would be perfect for skydiving. haven't seen any updates lately though. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001

a friend of mine went to Dubai, and since he didn't have a lot of jumps either (~200-ish i think), he wasn't allowed to jump into the palm islands dz, he was at the desert dz. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001

study the hell out of the sample tests and read all the testing material that you got from Dave. there are quite a few questions on the test about old canopy construction methods, and other general weirdness that you won't see on modern gear, and it covered only briefly during the course, but the FAA thinks it's important to know. you can take the test more than once if needed, but it gets expensive. knee pads. and don't get a cheap pair either. i found that volleyball pads work nice, fabric covered padding and a nice wide elastic to hold it in place. i took the deWolfe course, and i think he preferred that you have no prior packing experience. that way you didn't have to unlearn one method to learn his. i put ~400 jumps on one, at a wingloading of 1.3 or so. openings were snivelly, probably 800 feet or so. the direction i would end up going was pretty random however. never violent spins or line twists, generally 90-180 off heading though. packing was no different than any other zero-p canopy. it will pack larger than a non air-locked main. flare was great, long recover arc so timing it was easy. landing, see flare. windy days can be fun with an air-locked canopy, since they don't like to collapse on their own. using a toggle or riser to get it on the ground helps. i would then walk up the birdle to keep it from reinflating while i gathered it up. turbulence wasn't an issue. on days when others were getting rough rides and 'accordioning', i would just ride through. please note, this is not a reason to go looking for turbulence, or jumping on a day when you wouldn't with a non air-locked canopy. edited to add: very heavy on front risers compared to a my current sabre2 150. couldn't hold it for very long, or very far down. Racer main SpeedBag in Infinity container?
kingbunky replied to skydiverek's topic in Gear and Rigging
okay, thanks. that explains the difference. i have a party bag in my infinity, but i have very little experience with racers or it's speed bag. i have since looked up the speed bag, and while it looks like it will accomplish it's mission (preventing line dump), i don't get why they call it a speed bag when it would take a little longer to close, and probably not any quicker to open. oh well, it's just a name. if it does what you want it to, go for it. Racer main SpeedBag in Infinity container?

maybe this is a stupid question, buy why not get a party bag from vse? you know it will fit right. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001 -
Lost Prairie Boogie 2013 (Aug. 3 - 11)
kingbunky replied to TallGuy's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Made it! Had an awesome time too. Good fun, beautiful scenery, too much heat, awesome food. I did , however, manage to lose my iPhone at some point on the trip to the fire tower. If anyone comes across it, gimme a yell, please and thanks. It was last seen in or around bounce's truck. Might have lost it getting in or out. i like to lay the canopy out as if i was going to pack it. then gather up all the brake lines on one side and run that to the slider. once i get to a grommet, i keep the brake lines on top and the suspension lines under, in one hand. run this to the riser, and if it is properly oriented, hook it up. repeat on the other side. then i do a full continuity check to double check. as mentioned above, the shipping and customs charges are a killer. if you live near the border, (again, as mentioned above) check out kinek.com to get a us shipping address. if you are heading sourth over the winter, most dropzones will receive shipments for you, but call ahead to confirm.
