  1. POPS, POPS, POPS! POPS members all know that infamous traditional POPS call to duty! The dynamic duo, Jim Shorter (aka Rock) and Steven Love (aka The Bald Guy) have teamed up to organize/establish the first Delaware POPS record during the Skydive Delmarva/Skydive The Point Halloween Boogie. There isn't a Delaware state record on the POPS web site so it has to be at least a 9 way. The 40+ passenger Caribou and Delmarva's Otter will be available. Contact Jim at [email protected] if you're interested. He needs a head count ASAP. The dates for the record attempt will be Saturday October 29th or Sunday Octover 30th for a weather out date. If you're interested and over 40 and want to become a POPS member go to http://www.thepops.org/usa/joining.php and sign up. Your POPS number will be required for proof of membership and to qualify the record prior to the record attempts. There is a $20 POPS record attempts fee which covers: - Organizer - Videographer - Water, snacks, misc. Note: there is also a boogie fee. Click here for more information and to register for the boogie.
  2. Two dropzones are teaming up to put together an incredible Halloween Boogie this year! The 40+ jumper Caribou will be here along with Skydive Delmarva's Twin Otter. The Skydive Store will be here with demo rigs and canopies. If you want to try something in particular contact them at 866-Y-SKYDIVE (866-975-9348). Early registration is $30 and includes: - RW and Freefly organizers. - Beer Friday night and Saturday night - Ice luge Saturday night - Dinner Saturday night - Band on Saturday night. - Hooping performance on Saturday night by Kelly Jo of http://www.radianthoops.com - Boogie T-shirt. The deadline for early registration is October 14th. Starting October 15th registration will be $35 for Jumpers. Nonjumpers can register at any time for $15. Please register early to help us get a headcount. You can register online at http://www.skydivedelmarva.com/halloween.php or call 888-875-3540. Weather/Refund Policy: If the weather is so bad that it is obvious no jumps will be made over the weekend or if the boogie is cancelled for any other reason, we will not bring the Caribou in and all registration fees will be refunded. If the weather is good enough to bring the Caribou in there will be no refunds of registration fees.
  3. I want to get some clear plastic sheeting similar to what is used to make the pouch/window in a rig for the AAD control unit. Can someone tell me what that's called and where to find it? Thanks!
  4. This thread was at the top of the bonfire and it was abbreviated "How does one go about finding head..." Thanks for luring me into this boring thread
  5. Sorry to hear that the dropzone has been closed. My wife and I jumped there a few years ago and had a great time. The staff and fun jumpers were very welcoming and professional. I signed the petition. Good luck! I hope to return there some day.
  6. Water training will be held Saturday July 2nd in the Nanicoke River near the dropzone. We will meet at the dropzone at 6PM and take two boats to the river. Please bring swim wear, a towel, $5 to help cover gas and some beer or your beverage of choice for when we're finished. Water training is required for your USPA B licence and a B license is required to jump at night which we'll be doing July 16th. If you want to come please call manifest at 888-875-3540 or email [email protected] so we'll have a headcount.
  7. I think you guys are being tongue in cheek about this and this is a little off topic but I encourage people, especially newer jumpers, to watch me inspect and repack their reserve and ask questions because I think it's a valuable learning experience. I remember watching a reserve I&R when I was a newer jumper (thank you Kruse!) and feeling more confident in my gear knowing how it was all put together. It may take a little longer but I don't charge more.
  8. We have scheduled night jumps for July 16th. A USPA B license is required to jump at night. With that in mind we'd like to schedule water training for a Friday evening at 6 near the dropzone. Please let manifest know if you are interested and when you can make it. You can call 888-875-3540 or email [email protected]
  9. I did report it using the procedures outlined by Google months ago. I got a auto reply from them but nothing else happened.
  10. Does your dropzone do observer rides? You can offer her the tandem and if she says she's not up for it, offer her the observer ride instead. Skydiving is definitely not for everyone so I would present it as a choice more than a gift. Something like "no pressure but I'd love to give you a tandem skydive if you think you'd like it. If not, why not come to the airport with me one weekend and take a plane ride"
  11. Here are some more details about the Brian Germain Canopy Course this weekend: -Please show up at 8:30 on Saturday morning and if you are new to the dropzone stop by manifest to fill out a waiver. -The course will start with a discussion of canopy theory that will go until about noon. -Next Brian will brief a jump, video your canopy flight, debrief that jump then repeat as weather and time permit. -Sunday will start with another discussion. Weather permitting jumping will start earlier than noon. -Jumpers in the course usually make 2-3 jumps per day.
  12. Just a reminder that this is coming up this weekend. Also Delmarva jumpers Dan and Michelle will be celebrating their recent wedding by bringing a keg and cake to share with the DZ on Saturday night. So come share in their marital bliss
  13. I agree, all the dropzones mentioned in the thread are great places in their own ways. The nice thing about living in DC is that there are so many dropzones within 2-3 hours. The bad thing is that they're all 2-3 hours away I just wanted to give my biased opinion of Skydive Delmarva (biased because it's my home dropzone and I instruct there). We have free RW organizing/coaching and plenty of free fliers and wingsuiters to jump with, incredible views of the ocean and Chesapeake Bay from altitude, wide open landing area with plenty of outs, a bonfire every Saturday night and we're close to the beaches. All that said, you can't go wrong with Orange, Skydive the Point, or Chambersburg. I would also add Maytown to the list -- a very cool 182 dropzone with very experienced CRW guys. Also Cross Keys isn't too far of a drive and is another great place to jump.
  14. The course targets parachuting skills as the primary subject matter, from the perspective of a parachute designer, avid canopy piloting enthusiast, and transcending fear specialist. Brian will, however, adapt the class to incorporate anything the hosts believe to be appropriate, as well as shaping the subject matter to fit the needs of that particular group of students. The cost of the two-day course is $195. Please call 888-875-3540, email [email protected] or go to manifest in person to reserve your place in the course. A deposit of $50 is required to reserve your place.

  16. Thanks for the replies everyone. We're going to stick with the 143 and encourage our lighter member to drink more Thanks also for the tip about adding weights to the rig. That should make things more comfortable for him.
  17. Is a Lightning 143 any more compatible with a Lightning 160 than a Lightning 126 would be? The reason I ask is that we are getting Lightnings for a 4 way team. Three of us weigh around 200 lbs. so we're getting 160's. The fourth weighs 150 lbs. We're wondering if there is any advantage to putting him on a 143 and having him wear weights vs. putting him on a 126 without weight.
  18. Apparently Skyride has been setting up Google place pages for fake dropzones and hot air balloon operations all over the country. Now that Google strongly factors proximity in its search results, these place pages are becoming very important. Here's one example for "Skydiving Baltimore": http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=2596522180058965488 It even has an address at Martin State airport which is very close to Baltimore. Of course there is no skydiving operation there. I called the airport just to be sure. I called the number listed in Google and the operator answered as Thrill Planet. I asked if this was "Skydiving Baltimore." She said well that's just our website. I asked if the skydive would be in Baltimore. She said no, it would be in Manassass, VA. From what I can tell Google strongly factors the number and quality of reviews when ranking place pages. Skyride has apparently figured that out too. "Skydiving Baltimore" has three 5 star ratings from Hal, Chelsea, and Faye. All three of these users have multiple 5 star ratings for other Skyride places all over the country. Here's a sampling of Chelsea's reviews: In 5 days she did 2 tandem skydives and took 3 hot air balloon rides in 5 different cities, 2 of them over 2000 miles from each other! What can be done? I reported "Skydiving Baltimore" to Google. I hope they take it seriously. Maybe you could take a few minutes and find out if there are any of these "places" near you and if there are report them to Google. At the very bottom of a "place" page there is a link to report a problem. I would suggest calling the number listed to be sure it's not a real dropzone first.

  20. Plan now to participate in this 2-day, 6-jump, 3-event meet for mixed experience level jumpers organized in teams of four. Commitment for both weekend days of the event is ideal. The first-day final registration and briefing will begin at 0800 (8 o'clock) on the creeper pad. The FSE-4 formations and exits will be announced and demonstrated, the teams will be formed or finalized, and a safety briefing accomplished. Be ready for a 20-minute call ½ hour after release from the briefing. Events | Scoring and Awards Minimum 75 jumps and USPA "A" license required; no exceptions. Teams should be composed of the following experience levels: 1 novice jumper -
