  5. I've known and jumped with the TM since he was in AFF. If I were to choose someone to take my mom or sister skydiving he'd be at the top of the list. He's one of the most humble people I know. He loves his job as a TM and has dedicated his life to it. Over the years I've watched him grow personally and professionally. He takes the responsibility of making someone's first skydive a safe and fun experience very seriously. As a new TM I know the feeling of wanting to hold on to your passenger (male or female) during the deployment. Because the risers are attached to your harness above the passenger there is a forceful feeling of them falling away from you as the risers pull you in the opposite direction. It's illogical to think that the harness won't hold them and that your arms will but there is still a subconscious reaction of wanting to prevent them from falling away from you and it sometimes takes a conscious effort to stop yourself from grabbing them. The major safety concern and the reason it is so important not to reach in front of the student is that it puts your arms in a position that they can be trapped by the student. The reaction to hold the passenger though is instinctual and has absolutely nothing to do with copping a feel whether the passenger is male or female. The OP's girlfriend's sister loved the experience of her first skydive. Her sister's public Facebook post dated 9/14/13 reads: "My father, my sister, and I went skydiving today! It was my third time, their first, and we all had an absolutely excellent time, so thank you [OP], [TM], [other TMs & videographers]! :-)" I've worked for Skydive Delmarva for 9 years now and the TM is a close friend of mine but I'm not just sticking up for my home dropzone or my buddy. I'll stake my personal reputation on saying that this TM is safe to jump with and that the issue of reaching in front of male and female students during deployment has been addressed and corrected. -Gregor Weeks

  9. Skydive Delmarva's Otter got new engines over the winter making it a Super Otter. This means more people per load and faster rides to altitude! It will make its debut at Safety Day on March 8th. We'll have safety day seminars for experienced jumpers on Saturday morning. Weather permitting we'll start jumping around noon. Details at http://www.skydivedelmarva.com
  10. 11. We've had a deaf jumper go through AFF at Delmarva before. Her boyfriend at the time is a regular jumper who knows sign language and helped with the instruction. If I recall correctly we used flags in lieu of a radio and everything worked out ok. Let me know if your friend would be willing to make the drive (probably about three hours). If so I can talk to the DZM and the fun jumper who knows sign language to see if we could make it happen.
  12. I just inspected a Reflex and found that the support tapes of both the main hand deployed pilot chute and the reserve spring loaded pilot chute are sewn on the block of the fine mesh portion (as opposed to being sewn on the bias). I remember reading this post by Bill Booth saying that sewing the loading tapes on the block is not correct because it could allow the skirt to stretch below the apex thereby lessening the effectiveness of the pilot chute: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=132976 I don't have much experience with Reflex rigs so I'd like to hear from people who have more experience with them. Is what I found an anomaly or are all Reflex pilot chutes sewn with the loading tapes on the block? I'm especially concerned about the reserve pilot chute. The main pilot chute has been used hundreds of times and the owner hasn't said anything about hesitations or bad openings. The reserve pilot chute has never been used but the rig has been inspected over 20 times by several riggers. If there are no other issues with it can it be considered air worthy?
  13. That was a fun night! Yeah we're still at Delmarva. It fits us like a glove. Kid and dog friendly (yeah we have both now) and a laid back but safety conscious atmosphere. Tracy and Martin haven't been here since '05 I think.
  14. Hi Noelle! Some of my favorite posts were from Dan Rossi about his experiences as a blind skydiver, especially the one about the origin of "flare when you hear the crickets." Anyone know if he's still around/jumping? I also remember someone in true rec dot fashion posting long lines of nonsense to confuse his speech synthesizer
  15. The Caribou is scheduled to arrive first thing Friday morning! Friday looks jumpable and Sunday looks great so we'll get some good jumps from her. Yeah the party might start early Saturday but the weather forecasters have been wrong before so we'll just have to see what we get

  22. That would be awesome. Unfortunately I don't think it will ever happen. There are dropzones who get most of their business from skyride, they don't read these forums, they're not part of USPA, and they're perfectly happy with skyride.
  23. Good news! Google apparently did listen to the complaints from me and others and removed this listing
  24. For those of us who couldn't make the boogie, is there a way we can donate to the cause? Thanks!
