1. I would call Sonic at the Ranch that's where I got mine. I thought the price was good and the service was excellent.
2. L&B Optima. Very accurate, small will fit inside your helmet. It has 3 high speed audible settings for free fall and 3 low speed settings for under canopy. So for example you can have an audible set at 4500, 3000, and 2000 and also have another set of audibles for 1000, 600 and 300 that will go off under canopy. Not to mention the best customer service in the industry.
3. My first rig was also a G4 both handles were soft handles w/ hard inserts. The person who sold me the rig (I bought it new) is also an S&TA highly recommended soft handles for a couple of reasons. The two that convinced me was, his multiple stories of reserve handles getting snagged on something either in the airplane, or in free fall. The second is while using hard housings on the rig and risers which handle has the greatest probability for a hard pull? The cutaway. You only have to pull the reserve pin about an inch. I was also confident that even in a high stress life or death situation I would pull the right handle first as I have practiced it that way so many times, even with my low jump numbers at that time.
4. Jeb Corliss announces he finally has a real plan to do a wingsuit jump with out a parachute. He just needs the funding. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/12/12/earlyshow/leisure/celebspot/main3609758.shtml
5. Z-hills... I was on a load this past weekend with 2 wing suits, 3 tandems, 2 aff, 1 student solo, 2 way freefly, 3 way freefly, 6 way rw. This is a pretty normal mix, the only jumpers missing on this load was the hop and pop swoopers.
6. I would agree with you here. Did a 3 way on jump 30 and it was not pretty. Reached to make docks, hard time matching fall rate, bad exit got on top of another jumper. Reached to make dock with wrong hand. Broke up the formation. Got on the ground not feeling great at all. The two other jumpers were congratulating me on a great skydive. I thought they were nuts. As they explained to me I did a lot of things right and most importantly we had a safe skydive. I recovered quickly from all of my mistakes and turned and tracked flat at the right altitude. They both told me having more solo jumps probably would have made matters worse as you can pick up a lot of bad habits when you do not have a point of reference. One of them asked me to make another jump and things went a little better. They both told me jumping with other people takes some getting used too and encouraged me to continue to ask them and others to make jumps.
7. My instructor, constantly drilled into my head. STOP! Arch, Relax. He would always tell me whatever you are doing is not working so "stop!" This not only works when you get yourself into trouble but helps with anything you do in freefall or even under canopy.
8. I bought an Altitrack about 2 months ago and recently the housing cracked.I really have no idea how this happened as I am very careful with my Alti. Below is the e-mail conversation I had with them. Larsen & Brusgaard I bought this altitrack new about 2 months ago from the Sunshine Factory in Florida. I have used it for 21 jumps. I do not recall dropping it or hitting it against anything though it is possible I did, but did not realize it at the time. As you can see from the picture the housing is cracked. Is this something that would be covered under warranty? If not can it be fixed and how much would it cost to fix? Thanks for the help. Ryan Anderson Their Response Hello Ryan, I am sorry to hear about the problem with your Altitrack. It's the first time we see a cracked casing... 9. Was wondering if there are any good skydiving magazines other than Parachutist and skydiving magazine?
