  1. if cossey managed to get that 28' canopy into the smaller nb6 container he likely had a very HARD pull.possibly even a NO pull.
  2. i really doubt that a 28 ft canopy would fit in the smaller nb6 container. i have packed nb6's and i gotta tell ya its tite.extending the container so a 28 would fit would not be legal as an emergency parchute.the faa approves military personel assemblies for use (i dont recall the wording in the f.a.r.s )but unless the container was built with extensions at the factory and there was a military drawing/ contract #, it would nt be legal for use as an emergency parachute. of course if cossey DID somehow manage to put the much bigger (ABOUT 200 sq feet) and bulkier 28 ft canopy into the smaller nb6 container ,then cooper would likely have had an extremely HARD pull .remember, this was back in the days of cones(which the nb6 and nb8 containers had 4), NOT closing loops. rigs with cones exhibit higher ripcord pull forces than the same container with loops.
  3. thats why i said he would be under canopy for UNDER 8 min 20 sec.(i.e. less than).. rate of descent "over 20 ft per second" would apply ( i assume ) at sea level .at higher altitudes rate of descent is faster.
  4. flying scares me. when i was 7 we lived next to a g/a airport. saw a plane go in from about 100 towing a glider. still see / hear that crash.
  5. i guess nobody got that i was being SARCASTIC when i said SUPPOSED retirement age. lighten up.
  6. i just got an email from dan poynter. he believes the 26 ' navy conical rate of descent with 230 lb exit weight would be over 20 feet per second.(his exact words were "ouch")that means that at sea level rate of descent would be over 1200 feet per minute.if cooper did a hop n pop (not likely) he would have been under canopy for under 8 minutes and 20 seconds ,not 10 minutes as is being thrown out here.this will affect the landing area.
  7. glad he is ok. yeah wal mart is startng to get on my nerves with this cheaply made chinese CRAP. towels, blankets etc. we have bought there (chinese made) fall aprt after just a few weeks. my daughter bought some blouses there that started to come aprt the first time they were worn.
  8. 230 lbs ouch! that opening HAD to hurt (if he opened).can anyone do a computer simulation for the jump w/winds and all the other factors plugged in?start w/ different freefall times,as well as different times for the jump.
  9. whether you believe it to be bull shit or not ,the fact is there IS a difference in rate of descent, which would affect the landing area based on a significant difference in the amount of time under canopy.
  10. once again, if cooper used an nb6 he had a 26 ft canopy NOT a 28 '.lets keep the facts straight, PLEASE.
  11. Cooper's reply was"It doesnt matter ,they can file it in the air" can one presume from his statement that cooper had at least a rudimentary understanding of pilot procedures and thus may have been a pilot as well??
  12. i agree with rob. retire the canopy. its at the supposed end of its service life anyhow.
  13. the picture shows an nb harness attached to an nb container. the giveaway is the side flaps that wrap around the corners and over the top and botton flaps.
  14. the nb series never used anything but the quick ejectors shown in an earlier post.so doubt that there could have been a b12 snap involved. please note that the quick ejectors on the leg straps are adjustable(while the one on the chest strap is non adjustable). while adjustable b12 snaps were made, most harnesses using b12 s havea non-adjustable b12 snap hooking up to an adjustable V ring.
  15. 26 ft navy conical is NOT lo po.it is 80 to 120 cfm vs 40 to 60 for the lopo 1.1. NOT F111
  16. the 4 line release was an AirForce mod.the navy never (to my knowledge ) used it.however a civilian rigger could have.but i find it unlikely .the 4 line release did not really gain a significant foothold in skydiving till about 1973 or 74. what was more common was the single doghouse(or blowhole as some called it).just a single window about 36 inches high cut out of the bottom end of the rear center gore. not real effective.the canopy will still oscillate , and turns /forward speed are almost non exsistant.could also have have a tri vent (3 dog houses) which was only marginally better than 1.26 canopy with a 4 line release is possible, but rate of descent is much higher than a 28 with a 4 line. thing about the 4 line release is , you have to have some knowledge of what it is in order to activate and use it.(unexperienced person probably would not activate it )
  17. nb6 stands for NavyBack26 ft.i Seriously doubt you could get a 28 ft canopy into an nb6 ,it is just too small a container. a 28 ft canopy goes into the NB8. also did cooper open the nb6? it would have been difficult for him to reclose the container without special tools anyone familiar with the navy back(NB)containers knows that the #3 locking cone is actually in the base of the pilotchute.when packing the NB series of containers one must compress the pilot chute till the cone is showing thru the grommet in the top of the pilotchute, then you must use a temporary pin(in the lower of 2 holes in the cone) to hold the p.c compressed.usualy a tube like tool is used to line the cone up with the grommet and to keep fabric out of the way as the p.c is compressed. but i would think it is almost a necesity to use the temporary pin, otherwise closing the container is really difficult.
  18. if i recall, ckret said coopper jumped with an nb6 which is a 26 foot canopy.
  19. which one did cooper use, a 26' or 28 ' canopy??i have seen both mentioned here.which is it??
  20. i thoght it was discussed that cooper had an nb6(26 ft conical. but now i am reading it was a 28 ft canopy?
  21. once had a guy go thru the roof of an industrial bldg .decapitated him. he was put in the morgue,,still wearing his rig.next day the dzo (accompanied by the faa guy) had to retrieve the packing data card (this rig was a jumpshack racer... anyone familiar with the location of the packing data card will appreciate that this was kind of a messy retrieval)
  22. Good for you. preserving our history is important.
  23. anyone know if coopers chute was steerable(single doghouse, tri vent ,single t ,etc),or was it just an unmodified 26' navy conical?probly wouldnt make much difference, but maybe it would influence his landing area if he knew anything about canopy control.
