The consequences of jumping in turbulence (pics)
humanflite replied to mik's topic in Safety and Training
Cumulonimbus can cause turbulence... in a big way! The one and only time I jumped when their was some monster cumulonimbus in the very near area to our exit, I had a canopy collapse at about 400 feet, straight in approach, very hard diving turn induced to the right was the result . Luckily I had more height than the poor guy shown in these scary pictures and just managed to level the wing out prior to a downwinder which was my only option as I was so low andf freaked out. (I love downwinders usually but not like that!) *I stopped the turn at about 90 degrees but the canopy was still diving* Now I have no hesitation to pull myself off a load in uncertain weather conditions. http://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/Cumulonimbus -
Thanks Dave will take that route then I think

Stiletto 120, about 7-800 jumps, unknown line age. But in trim and flies well. rigger certified as airworthy less than 6 months ago. Ive noticed that at the bottom of one of the lines what I would describe as a weak spot or worn bit of line where it has noticeably thinned.... its approx 8 inches up from the riser attachement loop (not sure if thats the right term) Is it possible to get one line repaired without having to have a full reline? (all the other lines are in very good condition) and yes, I am going to get my rigger to take a look at it but until then am seeking some advice, to know if I will have to send it in to PD for a full reline thanks

Asking another jumper to 'keep an eye on it' in freefall will be b*gger all use if you have a premmie while in a sit that cracks your spine. What everyone is saying basically, is, the Vector 2 is not suitable for FF. make of that what you will but you cannot be sure you wont also take out someone else in your group...

Deal! Awesome! Any chance of getting a pic for a desktop background without the watermarking?! -
Apart from the obvious one of doing loads more tunnel.....(meaing loads more $$$) does anyone have any good exercises or exercise types to do for tunnel strength and fitness. I do all round cardio and situps, pullups etc but Im wanting more specific stuff relating to long sessions of head up flying in the tunnel. meaning more bang per buck when I go!! thanks

I had met Emma briefly a couple of times and said hello to Brian about the same but hadnt had the pleasure of getting to know them both well. But this incident saddened me a great deal and I send heartfelt condolences out to the families and close friends of Emma and Brian. BSBD

Did Bush Jr just admit to committing war crimes?
humanflite replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/03/bushs-glib-waterboarding_n_599893.html Seems an odd thing to admit to, considering the gravity of the statement fair enough I say -

The British Parachute Website www.bpa.org.uk has some great info on tandems and statistically (by a lot!) has recorded them as being the safest skydive a newcomer can make.,
-
I still don;t understand how this can not be a rip off, at $300/mo you would have to live for > 138 years for them to break even even if they invested the $$ and made 7-10% the numbers don't seem to work. Yeah, but dont they base their premiums on the likelihood of the person actually dying? its all statistics and probabilities I thought anyway....

That would be on a suit with a full wing where the bottom hooks ot your leg, close to the PC. The suit the OP is using is a small wing, which doesn't go beyond the 'armpit' area, and uses no swoop cords to maintain wing tension, so PC or other entanglement problems are not a factor. Additonally, he has logged 7 hours in the tunnel with that suit and his AFF instructor prior to jumping. Ah ok, thanks for clarifying this Dave
-
Also, I dont know of many (any?) AFF instructors that will let a new student jump a camera suit with wings.. that adds just one extra element of risk to the skydive. A friend of mine with several thousand jumps managed to dump his pilot chute through a camera wing and ended up with a nasty malfunction. His experience and some luck saved his ass but it could easily have been much worse. Stick with weight watchers and if you want this bad enough you iwll lose a couple of stone good luck

Partial canopy collapse - in gusty conditions-
humanflite replied to humanflite's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Thanks calvin I am aware of active piloting but didnt know about the specific maintaining heading bit during a collapse. I think I did the best possible thing I could do given this situation though. Half the canopy collapsed and hence it dived hard and lsot a lot of height. I managed to re inflate that side by using toggle input and then just had to manage with the heading I was left with. downwind pretty much (from being facing into the wind) Will have to speak to some canopy gurus about how best to maintain a heading in this kind of scenario?!
