  1. I just bought a 170 .Down from I believe the 210 student rig.I was flying backward a lot.I plan on getting more accurate on that, and going to a 150. Which puts me closer to 1:1.I plan on staying there for some time.I was told you should be an expert on your canopy before you down size.Meaning there's nothing you can't comfortably do on it.So it will be some time before I'm off the 150.Everyone says it'll be sooner than I think.I'm in no hurry.I haven't even jumped my 170 yet.Winter sucks! 3. It's ok.So, you're nobody.Just stay away from the cans!!!!! "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  4. Wow! If I believed that I wouldn't jump.Sure anyone can make mistakes. But adding more complications before you have developed the skills to deal with them (IMO) is an unnecessary, avoidable mistake. 5. I have less jumps than you.I know you don't want replies from more inexperienced people than you.I'm not picking a fight either. Why don't you PM billvon and ask why your thread was locked. He probably will tell you and give you his opinion on your wing loading. 6. What's the fun in that?(being strapped in) "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  7. I've been working on that.Having a little trouble. It was suggested I take a canopy course, and I think she's right. Thanks for the help, though ,I appreciate it. "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  8. Sometimes the basics of camaraderie that have been instilled in me, I don't always see here.I don't know if it is seen more with experience or smaller DZs. "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  9. I thought it still was common practice.Or is that just because I learned from someone with 25 years in the sport? At this point, with me struggling with canopy skills, I probably wouldn't follow a d-bag.But, once I'm more comfortable under canopy I most certainly would. That's just common courtesy.I still think a bright color would be helpful. 10. That's brilliant. You can purchase a lift ticket or super launch lift ticket.I'd try and sell that to some resorts if I were you.Talk about the million dollar idea! "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  11. This should be a ride at a state fair! "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  12. I wasn't even thinking of that while stuffing my canopy with a green pilot chute into the black d-bag of my first rig.Good point. "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  13. I agree. My struggle is knowing at a high altitude how far I can reasonably make it.I think that might just have to come with experience. But that's probably for another thread.I don't want to get off the track of the original poster. 14. Thanks, because this is a problem I've also had. Although probably more important, developing the judgement to abort the plan as mentioned down the thread is something I need to do also. 15. Loosen chest strap is not one I've heard. What does that do? "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  16. I certainly won't advise you on EP's I'm to new. And I didn't fully understand the differences you were pointing out in your 2 scenarios.I will tell you in my quest for educating myself, I have found when asking the voices of experience about whether to go straight to silver or chop and go, in such a situation, it has been the most disputed subject I've asked about.Through lots of questions and reading of past incidents,I've come up with a plan I'm comfortable with.I just wanted you to know, many people disagree about this.So learn what you can here.Talk to your instructors, and people you know and trust, and then decide what's right for you.I'm not saying what's right or wrong. 17. You are correct. When deciding what to get for my first main, the advice I got was split between a 170 and a 150.I'm still under 1:1 on a 150.So I decided to error on the side of caution with the 170.I don't see me on it for a long time.I see me spending much more time on a 150.And currently I don't think a 150 is dangerous for me.I just wanted a little more experience on a bigger canopy. But now I'm not sure about one outflying the other in a 2-out situation. 18. (just replied to last post) I have a 170 main and 150 reserve because I thought I will keep the reserve throughout my downsizing.Wasn't thinking of a 2 out situation. Is this a big enough difference to cause one to out fly the other and choke it off before I had time to chop?Or in a situation you couldn't cut away from?I'm assuming that is the reason to have similar size in case of 2 out? 19. You are correct about others slamming this board. As someone wanting to learn about BASE long before my first jump. The experienced BASE jumpers I know advise against using this board for education, because even though there are very skilled BASE jumpers with good advice here, it becomes hard to decipher between good knowledgable advice and ignorance, to someone new. But, thanks to these kind of threads it makes it easier for someone like me to learn who to seek advice from.Thank you "Maggots Brat Pack" for helping me sort things out. Besides, serious questions I would still seek the opinions of the people I personally know. "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. 20. I know an RSL is right for me.It will be on my rig for sometime. Thanks for the info.I'm always trying to learn. "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  21. That does make sense. But, as a beginner, I would think dealing with a burble would be less of a concern than going too head low and increasing the chances of an entanglement.Although I don't walk around with a fear of these, if I had to choose it would be a burble.Recently I have questioned the dangers of a head-low deployment. It is something I would like to avoid. "I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas
  22. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Can you explain this. Why would slightly head-low be better than belly to earth?Doesn't head-low increase the chance of bridle entanglement?Especially if your putting your feet on your ass. 23. I am not an experienced jumper.I started reading incident reports long before I made my first jump.I can recall many fatalities that were assumed to be a result of lost altitude awareness during attempts to get stable. And disorientating spinning malfunctions. And trouble finding silver after cutaway.I can only think of one I know of where a bridle entanglement on a tandem may have been a result of an RSL.The reading I have done made me choose an RSL.I think not having one has caused more deaths.I would read back issues of parachutist magazine, or go back in the incidents forum here and see what you think.I'm sure there are more places to find imformation. Then you can form an educated opinion, and decide what's best for you. This is just a beginners opinion.
