  1. It also depends on wing load at our DZ Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  2. You can get both values almost instantly: Upper wind speed and direction can be calculated comparing airspeed with ground speed. The aircraft GPS asks for heading, temperature and altitude and outputs wind speed and direction. The pilots can ask air controllers for ground wind speed and direction. They differ quite often. BTW. At our DZ, we are all supposed to follow the same landing pattern followed by the first skydiver landing. If S/he fails going into the wind that means BEER! 3. Whoa. Sorry, never mind! Another anecdote: A few weeks ago ago we went to a different DZ. Many of us use altimeters with their readings in meters. Someone asked the pilots for the DZ altitude and they answered 1400 feet. Then he started changing our altimeter settings (he must be reading this ). Of course we all had our AAD and AA off. We jumped but when I checked my altimeter I decided not to pay attention to it but follow my instincts and opened "higher" than planned. Right after landing my altimeter showed I was 1000 ft AGL Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  4. Yeah ... the difference is big: 7080 ft . Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  5. Excellent idea the poll! I remember the first time I had to jump with my AAD off. Taking off altitude was a lot higher than the DZ altitude. I just knew about it on the flight line and asked my instructor on how to set up my ADD. He just told me: "We are not going to use any AAD this time" Plop! No more questions or explanations. I was worried about it but I had been trained to do it and felt myself confident and jumped. Now, I am not using any AAD long ago but already purchased a Cypress and am waiting for it. As our first taking off altitude is always higher than our DZ altitude we all must jump with our AAD off quite often and I like the idea because it makes us be alert. Of course things can go bad, but as someone said once here: I prefer dying because of my mistake and not because of a gear failure. 6. Was it an AAD failure? if it was, which AAD was it? Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  7. I am almost positive the flight would not be aborted and every one would be trying to: 1- figure out what the new skydivers will do 2- communicate with them What would I do in such a case? If I cannot be sure of their opening altitude I would try to jump the last but before wingsuiters and tandems and would open high Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  8. You are right. Both steering lines of the canopy with the malfunction are twisted. I uploaded here a picture of a good steering line. I already replaced the bumpers
  9. You are right: I ment I pomped the brakes. Sorry
  10. Hey! What an experience! It confirms the saying: When in doubt whip it out" BTW, how did your cameraman brake his femur? Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  11. Skydiving is addictive. Do you know any skydiver (not a student) who has quit skydiving because s/he just wanted to do so with no pressures from family, work, money, health, etc? Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  12. Basically, the slider got stuck halfway and I saw a little bulk just under the right rear grommet. Then I pulled and quickly released both steering lines several times, the slider went down, the right cells inflated and that was all. Unfortunately the picture quality is not good enough to show the little bulk under the grommet. Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  13. No, sorry I do not Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  14. It was me. My canopy was a DCM 280, wing load 0.8 I guess (it was long ago). There was a knot in my right brake line and the slider got stuck there. It took me 7 seconds to clear it. Fortunately I opened high because I had not jumped that canopy :) Could you clear yours? Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  15. This malfunction was caused by a tension knot (right control line). Hope it helps Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  16. Did you mount your protrack inside your helmet? If you want to use its full features you must mount it on you wrist or leg. (of course you can not use it as an audible altimeter then) Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  17. Start doing AFF jumps and you might change your mind. I did six AFF jumps right after SL and that is why, IMHO I think AFF is safer. Of course, you did 23 SL jumps. Most of us got off the rope in 5 or 6. Maybe any jump you did as a student was particularly unsafe. No wonder. I have seen people with a D license, 994 jumps 31 years on sport and that do not even know why line twists occur yet. No kidding! Please check this link http://dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?username=Andy9o8; Maybe they should have done much more students jumps Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  18. Thank you! It makes sense to me. Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet

  20. Good for you! but I wrote DougH . BTW: If you are kicking, rocking or twisting just as the bagged canopy lifts off, you can impart a twist to it. The principle is the same as when you give a Frisbee disc a flip of the wrist on launch. Line twist are more common on static line than freefall jumps. Parachuting - The Skydiver's Handbook, pag 142. Dan Poynter, Mike Turoff Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  21. No, I think it's because most static line jumps are made from the strut of a C-182. The static line's direction of pull is at an angle to the student, instead of straight up. This often imparts a spin to the bag, which will result in line twists. I've jumpmastered many hundreds of SL students. I've this happen a lot, even with great exits and arches. Is AFF safer than SL? Both seem pretty safe anymore. That's a good thing.
  22. Welcome to the sport! It is because of wrong body position. You do not have time to correct it. On AFF you have more time to correct it. I think AFF is safer. Please don't answer if you do not have a clue what you're talking about. With direct-bag SL you have a big chance of linetwists because of the deployment method. One in 3 jumps or so you will get linetwists even with great body position. No biggie, you're using a big docile canopy and I think it's actually good practice; seen a few AFF people who have no clue how to get out of simple linetwists and/or panic and/or cutaway needlessly. SL and AFF both have their strong points and their specific "dangers". There are a gazillion threads about which is better already. Both will get you on your way to your A so who cares. =I am not talking about Hop n' Pop, 5's, 10's, 15's and 20's. I am talking about body position and line twists. Please, select the one that applies: a- You are Dough's friend b- You do not have any idea about line twists and body position c- You think you are a skydive god d- All of them Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
  23. Yes, because you're the expert on saftey!!! Oops!. It seems someone finally explained my joke to you http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2677044#2677044 Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet
