  1. We'll try and get some pics up soon. Still trying to get some bugs worked out. Hope to have some quality shots we can post by next week. Craig Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but is there any news on this canopy? I'm assuming winning with them at nationals was proof enough that they're ready to show? 4. Not that anyone has questioned it, but Ed's logbook entries rock. While I was slightly annoyed a first at "loosing" a page in my logbook (stupid, I know) due to the detailed and verbose nature of his entry (2 large pages), it was well worth while. 5. Despite ostensibly being written by different people, I"m pretty sure I could write a script to generate an issue of Parachutist based on membership facts and boogie stats. Skydiving on the other hand consistently has actual worthwhile news about the sport. I think the paper and binding (or lack thereof) has something to do with the perceived quality as well. Neither magazine has enough content to fill a normal sized magazine, but only Skydiving admits this by printing something closer to what might be the skydiving section of a newspaper. Its thin, but well filled. Parachutist on the other hand seems to have more space to fill and just as little if not less real content to fill it. 7. I'm going to try and keep a level head because the R4 folks are friends and coaches of mine. Honestly I don't know why I'm bothering to feed an obvious troll, however here I go. As has been said, Jon is the only member who has competed in Advanced. The rest have their previous competition experience in Intermediate. No, they were not formed just before Nationals. My team has been training with them at iFly for months before Nationals, and I believe Rob said they formed not too long after last year's Nationals. They've been training their butts off, in addition to providing free coaching to local belly fliers. They certainly worked hard to earn their gold, and didn't just toss the team together to get a easy medal. Rob told me that they were considering competing in advanced, but due to their performance with the AA blocks, they didn't think it appropriate to try and learn the slot switchers of the AAA blocks. I'm not going to try to guess why someone would make anonymous accusations like this. I can only hope it's an honest mistake. Again, more support for the great internet sociologist: John Gabriel I really hate the internet some times. 9. Congratulations Fury! I expect a gold next year. Also, a heartfelt congratulations to R4, one of my team's coaches' team. Also, good on Slipstream(rhemwa's team?) and Air Force Encore for putting up a very respectable fight. A dolor netus non dui aliquet, sagittis felis sodales, dolor sociis mauris, vel eu libero cras. 12. I've ridden to the DZ with the rig (and gear bag) on my back, for lack of bungee implements, however I don't recommend it. In addition to being potentially dangerous, it got rather uncomfortable having 50+ pounds of gear on my back. I'd say on the back seat in a bag of some sort to keep straps and handles in check would be the best idea. Bungee nets are worth their weight in jump tickets. Remember to try and keep the weight as low as possible for maximum stability. A dolor netus non dui aliquet, sagittis felis sodales, dolor sociis mauris, vel eu libero cras. Interdum at. 13. I like the bit about a guy with a 182. Totally jives with what little I know about this region. I never noticed how close Moab is to Chinle. Maybe I'll head out the next time I visit my mother. 14. Just to be clear, if the members of my team (now 3 of us) were available to go to nationals this year, ,and we were somewhere near the same level as you, I would be all over this. I enjoyed watching you guys compete at the most recent NSL meet in Elsinore. You guys kicked ass! 17. Is it a deal? They'll most likely five some discount as compared to the normal rates. If you're a newb, they'll likely put you with a team where your level of experience and talent is appropriate. Fall rate is relative. That's (one reason) why they call it relative work. In 4-way, everyone speeds up to fall with the speedy one in the bunch. Wearing baggy suits to slow down, or cupping air is counter-productive to good 4-way. You do want to have your control surfaces (arms and shins/feet) in the airflow, but you don't want to be 'getting big'. There is a happy medium there. When the instructors do their demo's, the controller will crank the tunnel up to speeds appropriate for freefly body positions, so that they can show you everything you can do. You can do belly at freefly speeds, but you can't do freefly at belly speeds (unless you are a total bad-ass). For you, they're going to keep the speed at a level that has you on or near the net until you have shown that you can hold a stable arch, not bounce off the walls, and that you have control over your levels. I fly at iFly SF Bay on a regular basis, so feel free to PM with any more questions you might have. A dolor netus non dui aliquet, sagittis felis sodales, dolor sociis mauris, vel eu libero cras. 18. I would suggest that you get something inexpensive (used perhaps) until you're sure what you want to do. Also this 'provisional' time will allow you to assess (with the help of others) if you need a normal, fast, or slow suit. Buying an inappropriate type of suit can make you think you totally suck when you only sort of suck and have an improper suit for your body type and flying style. I would personally say stick to your belly for your first 200 jumps you are positive you want to free fly. 19. I think this is reasonable if you're "hiring" a videographer. This is pretty much what my team did for our first competition, and it worked out well. That said, if the camera guy is considered part of the team, paying them $20/jump plus slots is a bit much. If you are treating your camera guy a like a team member and not a hired hand, then they should be willing to act like one and pull some (financial) weight. Maybe expecting them to cover their own slot and packer is a bit much for someone who is producing decent "judgeable" video, but makeing money when the rest of the team is spending money seems off to me. Unfortunately, not many people have becoming an Airspeed quality video flyer as a goal, and it seems to me that it is perceived as being boring or not as fun as flying a normal slot. As such, it seems to be the case that some sort of incentive is needed to motivate camera flyers to do 4-way video as opposed to free flying with some friends or making money doing tandem video. 20. Closed faced helmets are theoretically: Easier to put on in the plane. No worries about goggles fogging up while you're waiting to get out. Just flip the lid down when you're ready to go. Quieter, due to less airflow into the helmet Warmer for the same reason Cooler because all the pro's wear them, even free fliers. Better face protection. No one likes a knee to the nose. A chin cup can help on an open faced helmet. Closed face helmets suck because the might be: More expensive. More material/perceived features == more cost Stuffier (is that a word?) You don't get that "air on your face" feeling some people love. Foggier? Some people say their glasses fog up more in cold weather with a closed face helmet. I've never had this problem, though it doesn't get *that* cold here. Worse for communication. Having a chin bar in front of your mouth doesn't exactly do wonders for your ability to yell audibly to a friend under canopy. I like my Mamba. Don't know that it's the best, but it seems to be fairly popular. I do dislike the fact that the screen is un-formed and must be bent substantially to get it into place. Then again, they can be made cheaply. I also have a protec that I wear when I feel the need for an open face. 21. Once you have a solid grasp of the basics, learning to fly Mantis and to do proper center point turns is worth it's weight in gold. I did this early in my jumping career, and it helped me immensely. A dolor netus non dui aliquet, sagittis felis sodales, dolor sociis mauris, vel eu libero cras. Interdum at. 22. As people are saying, video quite valuable, though not a necessity. The fun (and hard) part is the skydiving itself, and depending on (and possibly because of) your commitment, the team dynamics. 23. As a member of a Rookie/A team, I would second learning P and E, as was suggested. They give a good mix for long and round formations. We started with E, and stumbled a bit, as it requires some contortions and gymnastics of the OC and Tail, though our problems might have been equally due to learning how to exit properly in the first place. P came relatively quickly (once our IC got the proper grips on me (OC). A dolor netus non dui aliquet, sagittis felis sodales, dolor sociis mauris, vel eu libero cras. Interdum at.
