  3. Hey Sipi... The DZ where I try to prematurely kill myself has very knowledgeable and responsible pilots. We are on the edge of Denver's airspace, so pilot calls are critical. If I didn't feel safe with them, I wouldn't board the plane. Hell, I think most of our pilots are current jumpers, or at least have jumped. That being said, in my short time in the sport, I've seen far more potential incidents caused by general aviation pilots. And for the record, I'm a pilot too...couple of hundred hours, so I'm a newbie there too. But I can read and interpret charts. And see the little parachute symbols. And read NOTAMs. And listen to ATC, even when they aren't calling me. On more than several occasions, I've seen pilots fly straight over the landing area at what appeared to be not much more than pattern altitude while canopies were in the air. I've seen gliders that appeared to track jumpers under canopy. I'm not saying that every jump pilot is making every required call on every load, or doesn't do something questionable now and again. I'm sure it happens, I just haven't seen that. Not liking skydiving is your choice and I have no problems with that. Some people like meat, some don't. But, you will get much better responses here if: 1. You fill out your profile, or at least give some details on yourself, and what prompted your question, and 2. Don't be quite so confrontational. We skydivers are a fairly smart bunch. And we enjoy living. If we can do something to avoid dying, I'll bet most of us would be willing to listen. But if we're barked at, then most likely we'll bark back, and not much will get accomplished. Something sparked your post, so give us some details, and take a deep breath before typing. You may get the answers to your questions. Chris Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  4. Hawaii 5-0 or SWAT. Were they in the 70s? What about Land of the Lost? Doesn't matter, they were all good... Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  5. A while back, I was supposed to travel to Bogota for work, and posted here asking for tourist-type tips. LouDiamond gave me the contact info for another skydiver in case I had some spare time. Fast forward a few months, and I'm in Bogota this week. Lou's friend just called me and invited me to go out with a bunch of friends. Tomorrow is a national holiday here, so it's a fairly festive time! Unfortunately, I had to say no, since I have to work early tomorrow, and still have work to do tonite. What amazes me is how tight the skydiving community is! Here I am, a couple thousand miles from Colorado, and this guy who has never met me, invites me to a party. And, while we're talking on the phone, he mentions the name of a skydiver in Colorado that I've talked to too! Four thousand miles away from home, and we know some of the same people. Incredible. This sport is incredibly fun, but the people really are the best. So, thank you Lou for getting me in contact with Juan. Next time I travel to Bogota, or anywhere else, I'm bringing my rig. And thanks to the rest of you too. So, don't be surprised if sometime, some newbie from Colorado comes up to you, and says, I'm angrypeppers, and I want to jump. 6. The proceeds go to the 45th Infantry Division Museum fund. The info is in the order form. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  7. I did my first tandem two weeks after our wedding, and started AFF a few weeks later. My wife has zero interest in jumping, but knows that skydiving makes me happy, so she's cool with it. In fact, last spring, after going to the DZ and not jumping AGAIN due to a lack of rental gear, she told me I should just buy my own rig! Of course, I had been shopping already, but it was nice to hear that. I try to keep a balance in our life. I don't let skydiving control the bank account or our weekends. I make sure she knows that I'm being as safe as possible, and I don't let her feel like skydiving is a bigger priority than her. This weekend, I surprised her with a trip to Vegas for our anniversary! Maybe you could back off a bit on the trips to the DZ for a while? Or even better, find a way to get him to the DZ...even just to hang out for a few hours. Skydivers are some of the coolest people he'll meet! 8. Nada. The closest DZ is Mile Hi in Longmont, which is maybe a 2.5 hour drive from Vail. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.

  10. One jump: beer for my first helicopter jump. Just a nice slow, quiet backflip off the skid, but so much fun! Oh, beer too for my first jump as an A licensed skydiver. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  11. Since you mentioned it Julie, yes it was! Thanks! And an update. I checked out the canopy as much as I could while spread out on carpet on the basement floor, and couldn't find any damage: threads, bunched fabric, holes, etc. So I packed it up and plan on jumping it this weekend. I may still ask about hanging it up though. I appreciate all the help! Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  12. I did look at it last nite before I packed it and didn't see any holes, bunched fabric, etc. I'm going to check it more closely tonite. I really doubt that I'll find any damage, but it doesn't hurt to take another look either. I may just build a rack for the basement too. One I can disassemble when I don't need it. And don't worry you rigger-types...I'll have plenty of questions and work for you. I will know my rig inside and out, that's just how I am. But I'm not there yet, so you'll get the questions. Crossports...I'll have to remember that! Karen, Rob, Zig: thanks for the tips! d: Not a cornfield, but there's plenty of farmland in the area. Tumbleweeds are fairly common. So are prairie dogs...hopefully they won't show up in my canopy some day! Thanks! Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  13. I found this junk in my canopy tonite. I had to change the closing loop, so I figured I could get in a practice pack too. I was starting to flake the canopy, and saw this stuff. Looks to be part of a tumbleweed. I don't know how it got there. After I was finished jumping Saturday, I left the unpacked rig on the hangar carpet while I got out of my jumpsuit, etc., then packed the rig there. I checked out the canopy and didn't see any holes, but I think I'll hang it up this weekend and let a rigger inspect it. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
  14. :1:1 Only one jump, but I got my A! Weather moved in not long after I landed, so I didn't get to do any more jumps. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.

  18. Thanks for posting this, Rob! I'm practice packing my newish Pilot210, and your instructions worked like a champ. I need to get better folding and stuffing (controlling) the slider end still. The rolls loosen up as I stuff that end in to the bag. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.

  21. Hot enough that my SPF50 melted off my skin. The sunburn was bad enough, but the itching afterwards was worse. And now my skin is peeling off me like a snake shedding it's skin. Still a great vacation though! Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me.
