  1. Thanks DSE. How far would the century .55 stick out from the front of the cx100? would it be anything close to trunk's pic of the liquid lens in post 103?
  2. Anyone have the Century .55x on their CX100? The Century .55x is 37mm and the CX100 is 30mm...correct? Does that lens come with the step down ring as needed? Please post some pics if you have this lens on your CX100. Thanks
  3. Yeah that's a great way to just save the .MTS files, but it would be nice to be able to throw .MTS files back on the camera just to view full res movies on my HDTV without having to deal with burning Blue Rays. BTW. I was worried before I bought this camera since I was using a mac, but the process of getting footage off the cam and converting to quicktime or any other usable format is pretty easy.
  4. Just a little bump. Any thoughts on below? Question maybe for DSE... So I've been messing around with my options for getting media from my cx100 to my mac. When I connect the cam to my mac via the usb cable the cam comes up on the desktop with no problem. My plan for the future is to just copy the .MTS files from the folder called Stream to my mac or external hard drive. This way in the future should I need the original AVCHD .MTS files for editing or whatever, I will have copies in their native format. As for just viewing my movies I will convert to AIC and view with quicktime. Now for the strange questions... Once I save the .MTS files on my mac and delete from cam, is there any way to reverse this process? In other words say I want hook up my cam to the tv and watch and old movie that I have saved on my mac. Can I put the .MTS file back into the Steam folder and play it on the camera? I played around with this and couldn't get it to work. There are 2 folders on the cam that have files in them after I record a movie. One folder is called Playlist and it contains .MTL files. The other folder is called Stream and it contains the .MTS files. I tried copying the contents of both folders onto my mac then deleting those files on the cam. I then took the files from the mac and put them back in their respective folders and went to the play movie section on camera and the movies did not show up on the cam. Should this work?

  6. Just some more questions in follow up to cpoxon's post... Let's start by saying I'm on a mac. There I got that out of the way. So what do I need to do if I just want to view and store my videos from the cx100? and let's say I'm using an intel based mac. Can I copy the files to the hard drive and open them just to view? Now to throw a kink in things...can I store and view videos on my non intel based mac?
  7. Oh they're in stock at the B&H store, just stopped in and got mine yesterday. Damn this thing is tiny. I love it. Also got the Hypeye D Pro from B&H, but that's on backorder. :( So does the strap come off of this thing or do I have to cut it? Nice review DSE.
  8. I've gotta say, as much as I want the MC1 (by the way I thought that was coming out this month?) I think I'm just gonna get the cx100. Probably 1/3 the price and I don't have to deal with that long cable running down the helmet into the jump suit.
  9. Usable mounting surface on the rawa is about 2 1/2 wide by about 3 3/4 long, so I should be ok.
  10. I'm going to mount it to the top of a rawa which is fairly narrow and I'm not sure if I will be able to shift the mount far enough to one side to have the camera centered. Therefore I was hoping for a mount that allow the camera to be offset.
  11. So I'm planning on top mounting this camera using something like a Goldmember, Quick Quad or Schumacher Mount. Since the mounting hole on the bottom of the cam is not centered, do any of these mounts offer an offset option? Any suggestions? Rawa cam helmet.
  12. I thought I recalled there being a boogie in Puerto Escondito in the past. Anyone have any info on a boogie or if they jump on a regular basis down there?
  13. I just got to play with one of these cameras... DSE let me hold onto it for a bit. After toying with the menus, features, & buttons it seems just like a CX-12, but in 2 pieces. The lens part is very lightweight & the recording/lcd piece is pretty compact. There's a small square mount plate on the bottom of the camera... it'll fit into a lens shoe adapter & it has a threaded hole in the middle of that plate, so mounting to a helmet should be a breeze. For handycam use, I think it'd be pretty easy to make a handycam glove without need for the heavy-duty construction of current ones, since this camera has such a low profile. What to do with the long thick cable going from recorder to camera though... It seems at least 10 ft. and it doen't coil up into a small package. That could be useful tho... you could have the recorder on back of your right hand so you can see what you're recording & have access to all switches without need for an external control... cable routed over the shoulder to left hand for camera mount. Surprised Sony wouldn't have this cable disconnect with the option of different length cables. Actually no I'm not surprised. I'm sure once it comes out we could figure something out on our own.
  14. So would you guys take this unit over something like a cx12 that didn't have stabilization issues. I can't get over the fact of having to fish that head unit down from the helmet into a pocket or something. As apposed to just throwing one unit on top of the helmet. I guess if you're replacing both still and video then I see your point in weight. Am I wrong, but the still pic option is just like grabbing a frame of recorded video. The resolution can only be as much as the video resolution. 1920x1080. I can grab a pic off any video that I record. Doesn't seem like a selling point unless I am misunderstanding something. Don't get me wrong I love the concept of this camera. Having just the lens on a helmet would be awesome. Wireless would be the way to go, but with the HD bandwidth I don't think that's happening. Can't wait to hear more about it.
  15. Hmm, a recording deck coupled with a lens and imaging chip combined in one unit for mounting on a helmet....sounds familiar! :-P Yeah where the heck could we get technology like that? :) Do you think having a separate unit that has to be routed down to a pocket would be all that suitable for skydiving? I would much rather just have one of those cx12s on my head if they could only give us the option to truly shut off the OIS.
  16. It's nice to see that Sony is trying to create a more user friendly camera for extreme sporters, but the main unit with cable attached seems like it may be more of a pain in the ass or even dangerous. Having a cable routed down to a pocket from the helmet seems strange. Possibly the main unit could also be mounted perhaps on the back of helmet, but that would require a much shorter cable. Who knows. Just thinking.
  17. Sorry if this has been talked about, but I couldn't find anything with my search. Do we have any info on this camera for skydiving purposes?
  18. Are you telling me that a PC has finally got an advantage on a mac? What's this world coming to? I thought that the newest FCP version could import AVCHD? I guess I should read the user manual before I believe what I read. I'm not gonna give up on this camera that easily. Like I said, I have just about any video tool or software that one could ever imagine at my disposal, so there has to be a way to make this AVCHD format useful for me. Thanks for your replies. P.S. going jumping out in vegas the sunday before NAB starts. If you have any interest let me know. Uh...PC has had advantages over Mac for a long, long time. And Mac has had advantages over PC for a long, long time. they're just tools. Apple iMovie and FCE can import AVCHD, and do so just fine. But like everything else MPEG, Apple doesn't deal with the native format. you need a plugin to import, and need to wait time for the conversion. And in the conversion process, you lose bits/quality. Apple simply sucks at working with MPEG-based content. ProRes was advertised as the saviour of this issue, but it seriously lacks. CineForm is significantly better, BitJazz is even better still, IMO. Apple's codec ability simply sucks. They know it, their users know it, and hopefully one day, they'll quick fucking around and create a quality codec for pros, or they'll quit fucking around with pro's that want to use professional codecs and allow us to use the industry-standard, supported-by-everyone-but-Apple codecs. I'm fighting a bullshit FCP DVCProHD codec hassle even as I type this, and it's expensive. So basically for my simple viewing purposes, I can use imovie or FCP to import and deal with the loss of quality and I can just save my precious AVCHD files for when I am ready to edit them? Hopefully more of these companies will be AVCHD friendly in the near future. This camera just seems to be one of the best choices at the moment for a solid state skydiving friendly camera.

  20. Actually speed is not my concern and FCP is not my my workflow. I just use FCP to firewire videos off of DV cam onto my computer so I can simply watch the videos. I have many video/editing tools at my disposal so I guess I just need to know how I will deal with the AVCHD format if I get this cam? What is the easiest way to get the files off of the card and view them on a computer? Secondly, if I chose to edit using the media, what is my best way to convert the AVCHD files if I don't want to edit in that format? If or when I decide to edit, I would do it on an Autodesk platform which can import many different formats, but obviously AVCHD is not one of those.
  21. Hey DSE, I'm just about to make the final decision on whether to get the cx7 and I am leaning towards yes. I've held off for awhile to see what kinds of small HD cams would be out and this one is my favorite so far and it seems like it has passed the skydive tests. The only thing that I am worried about is the AVCHD. What are my options for just viewing the media I record? My plan is to import the files to FCP. Once I get the files to FCP, is it just a matter of converting the files to a more user friendly format so I can just play them as stand alone clips? My other concern is more about getting the media from the card to my Powerbook G4. From what I have read, I can't use FCP to import AVCHD unless I am using an intel based MAC. What would be my options in the field for transferring and possibly viewing the media on my G4? To sum this up, I guess my main concern is what is the best way to convert these AVCHD files to a more user friendly format?
