The 50m marker is not preventing popping up so it is rather useless. If the goal is to reduce popping up it should be placed 100m after the entry, and verting it should give a score of 100m instead of zero.

Cross wind landing on reserve
Guinness_fr replied to alexafox's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Not the same TJ (I'm assuming you meant Landgreen), look at the video! To the OP, your problem started way before flare-time, in the video at 23' (when highlighted in the square), you should have been more on the video guy's side so that a simple left 90° would put you facing into the wind with plenty of margin before the trees and their turbulence - it is hard to tell but even from where you where I think that you should have tried a 90° left instead of the right turn that I think you did (and which would have required about 270° to be facing the wind), you might have ended up closer to the trees' turbulence than might have been comfortable though. You've already learned the important lesson: plan things much higher and keep assessing your plan all the way down. -
Totally off topic but this reminds me that I wanted to ask if anyone had already measured the number of Gs that we are pulling in competition during our turns and compared them with the Gs we can get on very soft openings (hop & pop right out the door of a slow flying PAC750 for example). I'm asking because imagine that you had had a very very soft opening on that particular jump and that the lines got actually stressed during the turn (or the recovery), I would have hated to witness what you experienced lower to the ground scary stuff...

Instead of gate 5, I suggested to place a 1,5m sensor around the 80m or 90m mark in order to really limit the popups. If you vert that sensor you could still have the 80m or 90m score instead of a zero. Similiarly, I'd love to have the entry gate sensor lowered to about 0,2m instead of the water drag because having your foot bounce a bit just at the entry gate and getting a zero is annoying

Does anyone like the new rules?
Guinness_fr replied to morris's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Not a bad idea. I'd post that on the IPC page if you haven't already. I have, but you're the first person reacting to my proposal. Maybe I'll try to create a new post instead of just a comment. They would definitely get wet in zone accuracy then and get a zero. Disagree. Been there done that and you can still (sometimes) score if you decide to just avoid the VE for gate 1 and only touch water on 2 3 and 4 (or even only one of them if you think you're too short). But sometimes ending in the water is part of the game anyway ;-) it's also what makes it fun.. I look forward to giving these new rules at least a try at FLCPA#2! Then I'll know what I'm talking about (but being a newbie not so long ago I can tell this rule is not going to make it easier for them). I hope you'll be there. First beer's on me. -

But instead of having the VE on the gates over the water, you could place only one sensor at the 80m/90m mark and if you VE that sensor you still get the 80m/90m score instead of zero (and I don't think many people have enough power to efficiently pop up after 80m). I see 4 problems with the dragging the entry gate rule: - less training opportunities for people without a home swoop pond, - beginners with a moderate to strong headwind will not be able to get out of water - in downwind scenarios, the 20m margin before the entry gate is no longer enough imo, - aggressive people (pushing the limits) will make for spectacular crashes, while less aggressive pilots will sacrifice some distance for added safety. -

Does anyone like the new rules?
Guinness_fr replied to morris's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is that the 50 feet (from memory) requirement between the beginning of the pond and the entry gates does not seem enough if we are to drag the entry gate for power events (speed & distance), especially in downwind conditions, as it would make some competitors attack the ground aggressively. In downwind conditions I think we'd need something more in the 100 feet range, can all existing ponds accomodate this and then allow for dragging the entire speed course ? PS: I like the idea of going back to fun swoop courses as in the early 2000s -

Yup, they had plenty of weather holds and could not make the last rounds of speed and distance. -

I'm not really counting 9 cells on the pics/vids I've seen, but it does look a bit more than seven The front of the canopy does look elliptical like the petra does.

So how about those new rules in Dubai?
Guinness_fr replied to nigelh's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Who knows for sure? With a 7m/s tailwind Jonathan did 205m (670 feet) at an elevation of only 400m (1300 feet) (Distance2 pink open 2011). Plus these rules are not only for Dubai but also for subsequent events at other locations which may also have space issues with already existing ponds (or budget/space constraints to build a new one), and the more distance we'll allow, the more judges we will need ! I agree that it sounds frustrating to try and limit the total distance though. Having this new VE rule for distance will also increase the chances to do a zero if climbing a tiny bit too soon... -
So how about those new rules in Dubai?
Guinness_fr replied to nigelh's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Aargggh, my eyes ! I had been trying to remove from my brain the vision of Greg in his red suit since August, and now the shoes ! Oh the humanity ! On a more serious note my first thought was also about the power when touching water, we've seen Nick impact twice in the speed event (and still score very decently though) in Klatovy; I'm afraid there will be more of this. The first proposal that was made after the World Cup was to stay below 5 ft when over the water, but with no obligation to touch the water (also easy to judge with just another sensor+camera at the end of the pond), maybe that was not enough and that's why scoring the first accuracy gate was also introduced (it does require you to place your setup at least 50 ft back). You're probably right that we'll start seeing weird shoes now and we'll no longer be able to make fun of the classic accuracy guys with their funny heel -
Just drove by on a Friday (while on a roadtrip) and the people there went out of their way so that I could make a jump in their beautiful location. Extremely friendly staff ! Love that place !

Nick Batsh 220m Swoop Video
Guinness_fr replied to ianmdrennan's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
You're right Ian, air time will be shorter in the headwind scenario so the distance will be less. I happily stand corrected. PS: Unless I'm also mistaking here, the headwind starting speed should be 80 rather than 65 or am I missing something else? -

Guinness_fr replied to ianmdrennan's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Deceleration does no matter only air time (if the wind is perfectly in the line of flight) as you are flying in a mass of air that is travelling over the ground at a given speed. Now can I get a discount on the velo comp that I just ordered ?
