  1. I'm not sure who is judging the chili cookoff. Spicey chili is always good, in my opinion. and...um...what is the 'numbers'??? Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  2. "I am wondering how much $$ should I expect to spend a day once I am certified" Well what does the balance in your checking account say? Now multiply that number by 1.2 and thats about what you'll spend in a given month. Disclaimer: Don't forget to pay rent, other important bills before looking at that checking account amount. Seriously though...a lot. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  3. Eric, Bout time you made it out!!! Ha, just kidding, we keep missing each other. Been all over the place. This weekend? Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

  6. So just a thought that popped in my head while I'm attempting to work today. My...uh...prior to second night jump...will be tonight. I'm thinking that i'm going to unpack my rig and repack it. Not that I should pack any different for a night jump, I just know when I packed it last weekend that I was a bit rushed. It would probably be fine, and I wouldn't repack for a normal day jump, but looking for a canopy with a flashlight would suck. I wasn't anticipating a night jump when I packed it. So, what would you do? Just thought i'd pass the time! Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  7. Thanks for all the input. I think ultimately its best to go with what you've learned and practiced (even if its just practicing in your head). Preventative maintenance is the key!! Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  8. So, I have always been taught progression. Pilot chute, cut away, Reserve. Obviously in a hard pull or low exit (emergency), as well as some other instances maybe, I would go right for the reserve. I've heard some people say they wouldn't cut away w/ a pilot chute in tow (altitude permitting). What would you do/have you done and why? 9. Actually, in a track...your vertical speed is reduced. So optimally, you would track to the water and just at the last possible moment go into a stand. I've been below 85 mph (vertical) in a track...not sure that I would want to be in this situation though. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  10. PC in tow, resulted in two out (not side by side) landed both I know there are different schools of thought on this...well so I've been told. But here goes. With a PC in tow, my training and in my head I feel that I would cutaway before going to the reserve. I guess the thought being that when the main bag comes out that it would separate from the rig before the fabric was able to come out of the Dbag. Any tips on this school of thought? Is that correct thinking? WHEN or IF the Main Dbag comes out. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  11. Possible AAD save in Lodi yesterday. Not sure of all the details. Not a lot of information in the incident forum. Looks like the rare occasion of someone being knocked unconscious. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  12. hey guys...lets use this important thread so that people can learn and understand the limitations of certain AAD devices. Maybe thats not the intent of the thread, it was just a poll, but I think people especially new jumpers like myself can benefit from learning why people jump with/without AAD's as opposed to learning the definition of certain words. Lets educate ourselves as a group (skydivers) and let people make their own decisions. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  13. Also, I thought I would share one relevant personal experience. When I was 12 years old, I watched a jumper go in on my fathers rig. The older jumper was a friend of the family. Medical reports, from what I remember, appear to suggest at some point jumper had a heart attack. Although the jumper, nick name was 'RED', got the pilot chute out it remained in his burble to just below the tree line. The jumper was at full line stretch when impacting the ground. I'm not sure if the cypres was out yet when this accident occurred. I know that my father did not jump with one and the deceased was using my fathers rig. If there was truly a medical issue in the air, its possible reserve procedures (or simply clearing the burble from your back - think "check", "check" that you learn in First Jump Course) were not physically able to be performed. In this unfortunate case, a properly functioning AAD may have saved his life. These types of accidents leave quite an impression on anyone, especially a 12 year old aspiring skydiver. The AAD debate for me began a long time ago. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  14. What happens if there is a pre-mature...deployment! might hurt. But good for you. That definitely beats 50 yard line on the football field, or the library stacks at school. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  15. I voted yes - 90% of the time. I have been around the sport for what seems like a long time. I watched my father make about 850 jumps in the 80's to mid 90's when the AAD for experienced jumpers just came out (cypres). At that point, the AAD was required only for students. I did my first jump at 16 with an AAD in '96. I left the sport for a while and came back in March of '06. Obviously the technology is getting better, but the real question is whether its keeping up with the progression of the sport. Skydiving has evolved so much just in the 10 years I have been away. The question of jumping with an AAD in not black and white. There are so many disciplines in skydiving that each one needs to be looked at independently. For me, I jump with a cypres most of the time for several reasons: 1. I have 140 jumps. I do not swoop, I do not jump with wing man suits. 2. I jump with others that have low number of jumps (both RW and FF). Although I am confident in my abilities, I sometimes have to consider other people. 3. Although it hasn't happened yet in my life, i'm sure that I posses the ability to fuck up and in skydiving, it only takes once. Hopefully that does not happen and God forbid if it does - I need to take a serious look at my participation in the sport. I know that a AAD is a device that CAN work. I know that the device CAN and HAS failed and/or misfired. I CHOOSE to take the chance of wearing one most of the time and the device for all intents and purposes DOES NOT EXiST when I wear it. At this point in my skydiving career I feel that the AAD is a reasonable device to wear. When or if I get into other disciplines I will evaluate its use. All this being said, I recently sold my rig with a cypres in it. The new one I bought was supposed to come with a cypres but did not (thats a different story). I wanted to jump the rig and wanted to go to Lost Prairie which I did without purchasing one. So currently, I do not have a cypres until my next repack. All in all, skydiving inherently has risks. The only person that has the opinion that matters on wearing an AAD or not is the person putting the rig on their back. All we can do as jumpers is continue to learn as much as we can and make our decisions accordingly. Blue Skies. 16. I took the static line course and at the time didn't know much about AFF. I learned just fine and spent a fraction of the money it would have cost to do AFF at another drop zone. This drop zone that I started at (Malone Parachute Club in NY) didn't offer AFF. It helped also that my dad was my jump master and instructor. I think from a money stand point static line is the way to go. If money isn't an issue, I think you can learn to fly/fall through the sky faster with AFF. I base this on the fact that you have an instructor falling with you (2 of them for the first few levels) watching you...not just watching from the plane. Biggest con of static line...those damn line twists. Had bad line twists a couple weeks ago ( body position when opening maybe?) and it brought me right back to those static line days. I don't miss those. Also, unless the student gear has changed much over the past few years most static line programs teach the RCP - Ripcord pull. If you aren't familiar with modern skydiving gear when you start the sport, you've started to teach your muscle's how to deploy your main parachute that are no longer valid when you purchase your own gear. That can be a bit challenging when going to BOC. Just my $0.02 marcel Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  17. And if you plan on mediating me, you're gonna have your hands full! 'Shell I've always considered myself a "hands on" type. Of course, I will clear this with the West Coast Manager of The Rack V.2.0. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

  20. So everything went great. Jumped the new rig and had a blast. Its interesting to get everyone's take on the situation. Didn't stick to my original game plan and actually made some freefly jumps. Basically didn't change anything about the jumps I made. It will be nice to get the cypres in for sure but didn't cause much of a problem. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  21. For those of you on the Norcal Yahoo skydiving list this thread may be very familiar. But since I had to make a decision recently pertaining to this very question, I thought i'd revisit the situation. I bought a rig with a used cypres but unfortunately the rig was delivered without it. I am in the process of getting it delivered but it won't be here until the weekend is over at least. The container is brand new and I'm really excited to jump it (downsizing). My reserve was just delivered and I made the decision to pack up the reserve without the cypres and I'll just put it in when it arrives. I will be switching my main over to the new container tomorrow and I'll be jumping without the cypres. I've never made a jump without one but in my mind, I NEVER have one anyway. Now, I could jump my old rig all weekend that has the cypres. But faced with the decision a week of jumping without it doesn't bother me a whole bunch. I will think twice before jumping in certain situation however...i.e. I will probably limit my freefly jumps to one or two people with plenty of experience. No first timers. Having a very low amount of jumps myself I more likely will stay on my belly the entire time i'm jumping without the cypres. anyway, just curious as to the decision you would make. Would you/ do you jump without a cypres? Have a fun weekend and be safe out there! Blue Skies Marcel Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  22. I heard a certain guy from Byron, who may be taller than average, has had a run in with the cows...can anyone confirm and or elaborate? Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
  23. Quote 'tis true ... repeat after me ... the weather is terrible, the skydives suck, the beer is warm and there's too many damn Canadians! Quote But the good news is...there is skydiving, there is beer, and there are canadians...even if they are there for our own entertainment! And by the way, I always behave myself. What kind of trouble could a single, 25 year old male, who likes beer - preferred cold, but have been known to salvage whatever is available- get in? Basically, i'm an angel Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
