  1. Not me but a friend from way way back: This guy came from another country to New York in the mid 90's ('94 or '95 I think). Got a job as a day laborer in a moving company through a "friend of a friend". After 3-4 months the immigration authorities had a crackdown. He bought a car for $450 grabbed all his stuff and drove west. After about 16 hours of cold pizza and coffee fueled driving he pulled off the highway and slept in the car. When he woke up, it was getting dark and he decided to find some food and keep going. He didn't know it but he was somewhere in the Missouri Ozarks. He had breakfast at a "diner" next to a trailer park. The diner may have been nice at some point but the furnishings were stuck in the '70s. The food was hearty and hot. Bright neon lights and a general rundown decor. There were two line cooks and two waitresses. There were a few patrons in various booths and tables but the dinner crowd was dwindling. The guy sat at the counter and ordered food with a very thick accent that would have pegged him as a stranger anywhere in the US, let alone in Missouri. Being the kind of 23 year old guy he was, he flirted with the young waitress. She was 19 and had the skinny-wiry body that comes from hard living. Her eyes were still young with a plain face. The older waitress was 29 and looked 49. The young waitress undid her apron, said goodbye and without a second look got in to the guy's car with $57 in her pocket. Within a week, they were married and living in Vegas. Twenty years later, they are living in SoCal, two kids and a house. I asked her at some point why she got in to the car. She said that the older waitress told her that the worst that can happen is that the young guy with the accent chops her up and even that would be better than working a dead end diner job. I have talked to him several times about what he was thinking. He said that he didn't see the waitress that was running away in desperation, he saw the potential. "Besides, what could be better than driving in to the sunset with a cute girl?" There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers

  4. Agreed about the long intro. This is a fair point and I would usually agree. This is an excerpt from a Skydive Radio episode so it is mostly meant to be heard and not viewed. I just put it on with headphones and didn't really think about the video just like listening to the podcasts. The skydiving video is nice but the scare factor of this other activity he is doing is much higher. It terrifies me to see these expensive, time consuming and risky activities that Brian is engaging in: raising kids! Throw me out of a plane any day. Good job Brian There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers

  6. In preparation for the Fitz boogie, I cornered Chris into giving an interview. I am sorry for the audio quality. I put it on Dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/s/0x64h0v9hzs9jwb/ChrisSpence.mp3?dl=0 I would appreciate it if someone can post it on Youtube or anywhere you want. 10. Not directed at Mr. Troll (aka enta). Directed at other would-be "400 jumps velo guys" that pop up all the time here... FIFY Now that you make that clear...my apologies. Why are you such a killjoy pussy? At 1.46WL you are barely getting any performance on a Sabre2. Did mommy not pack and balls in your lunch? It means that you don't think at all. No one is angry because of the question. Some are a bit bored with having to deal with the fallout and "I told you so". The most cardinal sin you committed here, beyond your horribly arrogant posts, beyond the fact that you are a troll, beyond the fact that you remain completely anonymous, beyond the fact that you don't say who these mysterious rigger, DZO, Instructor and S&TA are, beyond the fact that you don't give a clue as to who's canopy course you took, beyond the fact that you have not posted a single video of your awesome landings....Beyond all that, you have failed to use the search function to read the many threads that are ridiculously similar to this one. FIFY, again If the "scared straight" approach will not work with you: 1) I just want the name of the pilot, dropzone, instructor, DZO and S&TA who are allowing you to jump that gear. I don't care if you survive or not: they should know better and I want to avoid the dropzone when you are jumping. If you care so little about your life who knows what you will do to mine. 2) At 200 jumps you might be fine. PD makes a good canopy. Deep flare. Into the wind. Wing level. Wear a helmet. Stay away from anything/anyone else in the landing area. 3) Insurance ID card in the jumpsuit. Signed incident report at the DZ. You ICE contact info is updated. Car keys, tent, bags are in a known place. Pre-filled permission to sell your rig (unless the paramedics cut it off you). 4) Post pictures of your x-rays. You will probably be fine. Hope you don't kill anyone else. There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers

Please provide: Name of instructor Name of DZO of dropzone you intend to jump this gear at Name of S&TA on duty when you exit the plane in this configuration Name of Rigger that packs the reserve with this configuration I intend to file a formal complaint against all of them to the USPA safety officials. Just kidding. You are a troll. In this forum you are called "400 jumps velo guy" Troll motto: "Go in or Go home!" There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  13. For someone who is supposed to be computer savvy, you are behaving like a dial-up user. There is a "search" function in the top right corner of the page. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=search_results&search_forum=all&search_string=AFF%20tunnel&sb=score&mh=25 Read my post in this one: http://www.dropzone.com/forum/Skydiving_C1/General_Skydiving_Discussions_F18/Is_a_windtunnel_worth_it_for_AFF_P4378808/ And this one: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4373312#4373312 In other words: How should I (someone you have never met) should know if you (someone I have never met) will benefit from tunnel time before AFF. I am not an AFF instructor. I am not a tunnel instructor. I am not even a competent skydiver. I might be a teenager troll without a clue (but I do know how to use the search function). Maybe you can try going to http://www.iflysingapore.com/ instead of lifting weights and jogging. It might create a much more relevant skill-set for skydiving. 15. Srikanth, From what I am reading, you have a bulk deficit of "follow through". Your online persona and list of activities indicate that you are long on anticipation and short on action. You have a tendency to do a lot of things but never take the time to master any skill (Except Oracle programming). There is a high probability that you will do the AFF course, get some pictures and videos to post online and when confronted by the long road to acquiring a skill set - you will be off to the next adventure etc etc. Your achievements are cool. Really! They are superficial and indicative of a lack of dedication to a single craft. You have done many amazing things as a novice. Every activity has the initial phase where you have an improvement from zero skills to being a n00b. That improvement happens very fast because when you are starting from zero, any improvement looks like a lot. And then the adrenaline/newness/novelty wears off and you are required to make an investment in gear, time and attention. It is hard to see incremental improvement after the initial rapid progression. The learning curve in skydiving can be a double-edged sword: It is possible to take it slow by performing tandem and static line jumps with tunnel time to de-couple the freefall and canopy portion of the jumps and putting them together later. You can also start AFF and in 7 jumps be a solo jumper. Both methods work. Some people like the slower path and others find it boring. Some people like the fast path and others find it overwhelming or get the bowling speech. I am guessing that someone like you will have no problems getting through AFF (with one caveat that I will get to later). Ultimately, "getting through" the AFF or AFP course is like removing the training wheels on a bicycle and it is a far cry from mountain biking, BMX-ing or Tour-de-France. Your largest obstacle in this endeavor is yourself. And this is where the caveat from above comes in to play. You are your own worst enemy, more precisely: your ego. I found it very difficult to jump with my ego on the back. It increased my wing loading, takes too much room in the plane, it is a bitch to get in the bag, it interferes in the dirt dive and generally makes me look like an a$$hole (ask anyone who knows me, they all hate my ego). My hardest skill to acquire was to stop farting in the plane but second that was to murder my ego. Thankfully, I had many willing accomplices! The ground hit me a few times, the S&TA took me aside, the door scraped my hand, load organizers showed me more patience than I deserved, I got "Burked". My ego still props up once in a while but mostly after a few drinks and it slinks away once I put my rig on. If you are not a bit afraid: you don't understand the seriousness of the situation and should not do this activity. Confidence is quiet, insecurities are loud. 18. Are you certified? Advanced? Technical? I am thinking we meet up at the Tel-Aviv international airport and either rent cars or a van to drive down to Eilat. It's about 3-4 hours to get there on easy roads. There are charter flights that go directly to the Eilat airport but I am not sure how reliable they are. If we have 10 divers we might be able to get a cheaper ride by renting a driver and a van. Once we are in Eilat, most of it is walking distance or short cab rides. Most diveshops have a deal to pick up divers at the hotel every morning and drop them off at the end of the day if you are diving with them. There are many hotels, motels, hostels and AirBnb type places in Eilat. Our group can decide where to stay. What other information would you like to know? 19. I would love to go diving in Jordan, Sinai and points south. There are better dive sites and more shoreline. Excellent suggestion. I would recommend to anyone on this trip to stay a few extra days in the region. You can easily cross over to Aqaba from Eilat and go diving or go to Petra and Wadi Rum (Totally BASE-worthy). You can also go south to Egypt and dive in Taba, Nuweibaa, Dahab, Sharm-al-Sheikh or Ras Muhammad. Jerusalem is fairly close and Tel-Aviv also. There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers

  21. Hello all, Background: I am organizing a trip to Israel for certified SCUBA divers. The red sea in Eilat is diveable year-round. Almost all dive sites can be accessed from the shore and that makes it very cheap. The slope is pretty much a dead drop and you can readily do a 60m(200ft) dive with your buddy. I am not affiliated with any shop or organization and I am not doing this for the money (If you don't believe me: ask me how I intend to prove it) The bureaucracy: The bureaucracy is relatively heavy as diving is regulated by a government organisation. There are SCUBA diving inspectors and training for safety is taken seriously. Instructors must be affiliated with a legitimate dive shop and have government permits so there are no freelancers. While they make it hard on dive shops to operate they give the divers a wide freedom to operate. I will coordinate all of this for everyone in the group. You really only need three things: A certification card or proof of certification that can be found online. Dive insurance (not just regular health insurance) and you it can be bought on the spot. Proof that you have dived in the past 6 months. Without proof of the last dive you will need to do a refresher dive that takes about 1.5 hours. Most dive shops require payment for dive services after you are done, like a restaurant. There is usually no need to pre-pay and you only pay for what you use. Traveling to Israel: US and Canadian passport holders only need a valid passport with 6 moth left on the expiration. You get 3 month on every entry. Duration: 4-5 days of diving in Eilat (red sea) Dates: TBA but March - May 2016 time frame Number of slots: 10 Requirements: --OW certification --Signed logbook with a dive at least 6 month prior to the trip.(Refresher dives will be required if you can't show a signed logbook) --Diving Insurance. This is a requirement by Israeli law. Certified divers who are tourists can buy one month diving insurance on the spot that works in Israel, Jordan and Egypt. --Emergency air source is required of all divers. Diving without and octopus is strictly forbidden Recommendation: --Advanced or deep diving certification. The slope in the red sea means that there are many dive sites deeper than 20m(60ft). You can do the certification in English while in Israel and it takes 2 days. You will be diving for those 2 days. If you have ever wanted to get your advanced certification this is an excellent time for it. --Wreck diving. There are 4 wrecks in Eilat: ---The missile boat is probably the most famous one. There are tons of pictures if you google "Satil Eilat". "Satil" is the acronym for "missile boat" and true to it's name it is a decommissioned Navy boat that was sunk as a dive site. It sits upright in 24m at the lowest point if you bring a shovel. It is a shore dive with an extremely short swim (less than a minute). There are a couple of swim-thrus and four rooms to do "penetration" dive. Most people don't bother with that. ---The "Yatush" yacht gets its nickname from being so small that it is like a mosquito or "Yatush" in Hebrew (That is actually a lie but I like this version of the story better). It lies at 30m and requires zero technical skill. it is a shore dive with a very short swim (3 minutes). Google "Yatush Eliat" for images. ---The "Yeelat" glass bottom boat hit a reef and quickly sank to 50m. It is only accessible by a short boat ride or a long swim because the shore entry point is in a nature preserve. The boat itself can be seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm3ZSDQxgOY ---The "Sunboat" is a 30m(100ft) long boat that was sunk as a dive site in the northern part of the Eilat bay. It is 30m long and here is a video of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyu4D9JuWxI. this site is a bit less accessible but on this trip I intend to dive it. To summarize the wreck diving: easy and non technical. --- Technical diving: --Eilat is a technical diving dream. If you have a technical certification you will love this place. Any Nitrox mix is easy to get since there are at least two dive shops that mix gasses on the spot. Pony bottles are available for rent along with full tech gear. You need a Nitrox approved and clean regulator (With a service date sleeve) to dive a Nitrox tank but they are available for rent if you don't have one. If you want to get Nitrox certified on this trip just let me know and I will set it up. The certification involves you doing some homework before the trip, a short classroom portion and 2 dives. --DPVs are available for rent in a couple of shops but you need to be certified. Certification classes are available by appointment and include two dives. If you want to get your DPV certification I can set it up ahead of time or you can decide on the spot. --Trimix and Heliox can be arranged fairly easily with a couple of days of heads up. Let me know in advance if you are going to do Trimix dives and the dive shop will have everything set up for you before you arrive. There are doubles, pony bottles, down lines, safety divers and surface supplied 100% Oxygen trapeze from a boat if you want it. At 75m there is still plenty of light penetration so you don't even need a flashlight. The bay bottoms out at 1,000m so it is plenty deep. --Extra insurance (costly) may be needed for serious tech diving. --Night dives are easy and you can dive all night. There is a recommendation to keep night dives shallower than 9 meters and to have dived that site during on the same day. I intend to do a night dive every night on the trip. --- Underwater Photography: --Most dive shops have GoPros for rent by the dive or by the day. There are also full photography lab services available. If you are bringing your fancy camera and housing I can probably arrange a professional underwater photographer for some training. --There is much to see. Octopus, blue spotted stingray, tons of coral, urchins, morays, lion fish, crocodile fish, turtles and many more. It is rare to see sharks or any really large fish. Accommodations: --It really depends on the group. There are places to stay from $30-$300 per night. Some dive shops have a diver's deal but the group can decide whatever. --The dive sites are a 10 minute ride from the center of the small city. There is a movie theater, a hospital with a hyperbaric chamber, tons of shops and restaurants and plenty of beach activities. There are also off-road jeep tours, camel rides and hiking tours. There is an excellent underwater observatory with a shark pool and a turtle hatchery. If you have read this far, let me know if you want to do this. There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  22. Ask him directly why he is teaching the 45 degree rule. He is an instructor and is responsible for what he teaches so you can ask about it all day without offending. For the jump order: remember that he is not responsible for your jump. Don't like the loading order, ask for a second pass, spot your exit for longer until the other canopy is in a place that you are comfortable with or stay on the plane or something else I haven't thought of. Bottom line: not safe = no jump. Ego and macho should stay at the bonfire, they have no place in the dirt dive or the sky. There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
