  3. Date: Ancient Greek times Gear: Wax, feathers and wood Manufacturer: Daedalus Wing loading: unknown No AAD reported No helmet reported Number of flights:1 Description: While trying to flee the island of Crete after being imprisoned with his father. Icarus ground launched his prototype wingsuit and began a flight over water. At some point, Icarus exceeded the manufacturer's recommended operating altitude and flew high enough to create a melting effect on the binding material on his wings. He then proceeded to a lower altitude but the humidity from the water underneath caused his feathers to become an ineffective air foil. Icarus plunged into the water without activating a reserve. It is not reported if he attempted to PLF but from later accounts he drowned in the water when the wood in his wingsuit did not keep him afloat. The manufacturer has been cleared of all wrongdoing due to the user exceeding the flight envelope of the equipment. Blue skies Icarus. April fools There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  4. Mr. MarkM, You make an excellent point. I am proposing a newer way of looking at formations 1) Plan a dive 2) Do it 3) Prove it Notes: I like to plan using a 3D computer tool to get the full view. I used Pro/E) The proof should show that the plan was followed. if you need 5 photographers and 3 video flyers and gps transponders on every flyer, so be it If you planned something you can't prove...find a way to prove it. One of the problems I see is that for regular formations the FAI defines a formation as "jumpers linked by grips"(for regular RW) There is a lot to talk about but still I keep coming back to the Grid being a good tool for some formations, not all or even most. 5. Mr. Guana, First of all let me apologize for the sarcastic remarks in my posts. It is not now or has it ever been my intention to put anyone in an uncomfortable position or cause distress. I feel the need to explain myself after such a passionate plea from you. I have never actually talked to, contacted, worshiped or had a conversation with user identified as "yuri". I have read a few of his posts. He can be funny, sometimes, almost. I barely have the skills to fly a wingsuit and I will be the first to admit it. Being a wingsuit flyer is not a necessity to provide an opinion in an open forum . In fact some of the people who make decisions in the USPA about wingsuit's regulations are not WS flyers themselves. Furthermore, any USPA member can open a discussion on any aspect regarding USPA board decisions. The recent board meeting was reported on in the link at the bottom [1]. "The Competition Committee met with several members of the wingsuit community and made slight modifications to the way wingsuit formation records are judged." From the IPC meeting notes in Lausanne.[2] "Jacqui Brewer then presented the guidelines for the Temporary Working Group on Wing Suits". And further down the page there is a note about the presentations made about judging wingsuit formations. From these two pieces of information, I would say that this discussion is far from over and it is nice to hear all ideas before committing. This forum is not formal and I have made no request from FAI or USPA to be heard with my 2 cents. It is important to note that there might be three different criteria for WS. The "docked" and "no-contact" formations are already mentioned by name if you read through the USPA and IPC pages. This opens up "hybrid" and "3D" or "stacked" formations. The "Grid" looks like it was designed to work with the "no-contact" formations only. I may be wrong, but I can't fit any hybrid, stacked or docked formations in the Grid in a legal way. (Not even a three way docked formation or a three way stack and so on.) Again I apologize for the hurtful sarcastic tone of the original post, but I don't feel I have invoked Godwin's law with it just yet. I agree wholeheartedly that this should remain an intelligent and thoughtful discussion on the future rules that will affect us all. 7. So just thinking outside the box... I want to do this 6-way, but I can't!!! It is not worthy of the grid!!! what shall I do??? There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  8. One day I will put up all the expenses and really depress the crap out of you. However, I take no responsibility for any resulting depression. I found that if I plan carefully, I get to do more with my meager resources. Didn't mean to cause distress. There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  9. Update to the boogie costs A week in Z-Hills $159.20 Southwest airlines:flight to Tampa $95 Ride to Z-Hills from airport and back $275 For 11 jumps ($25/jump) $71.20 Cost of food and drinks (oh-so-many drinks) for 6 and a half days $0 Lodging (Tent) For a grand total of: $600.40 Things to consider here: 1) The weather kept me on the ground. 2) I spent 2 days doing a coach course and a day sitting in on an AFF FJC 3) Another FYI for calculating costs $185+(2 jump tickets) Coach course with www.Skydiveratings.com There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  10. There should be no reason we can't have a large docked formations with wingsuits. Everyone who does not agree just look at the first people who ever did anything that was impossible. (Humble opinion...we have not yet scratched the limit of docked formations.) There is, however, a problem defining what is a wingsuit flight...If I put a couple of flaps on everyones RW suit and do a big way with a bit of a track, is that a wingsuit formation? I think not. I personally have a feeling that right now it is more "We know it when we see it" rather than measurable metrics. And I don't like that kind of thinking. It breeds sects and lack of unity. Maybe we should look at these problems from an angle of intent. Number one: You need to plan a skydive and execute it, safely. Number two: There are three types of flights 1)Wingsuit 2)Tracking 3)Hybrid...Just like RW and freefly Number Three: "Records are, by definition, feats that are breakable, measurable and comparable." (Source:www.guinnessworldrecords.com) So we can set glide paths as a measure of tracking/WS/hybrids. People can gripe about what the numbers should be....blah blah blah... and at the end we will have numbers and people will start to break records with these numbers. Intent is the main thread in this thought...you set out to do something and achieve it and later people can argue about it being a record or not. Another thing we need to consider is the freefall time records for docked formations. Wingsuit flyers can start setting records for "Longest time in docked formation" and keep them. If you can do an 8-way docked formation and keep it for a wingsuit jump, you can keep that record for a long long time. One last thought...I think it would be really cool to put grippers on bottom of wingsuits and let a freeflyer hang on for the ride...drag a person behind you? cool! 13. The pie is small and everyone wants a piece of it. So far as a brand spanking new flocker(more a dodo than an eagle) I have seen people having a good time with good friends and lots of shiny new toys to play with. I also hear of bubbles and lines and all kinds of geometries that do not exist in the sky but people can still stay right in them...that is good flying and the rest is arbitrary. Unlike FF or FS we do not have grippers that the dock is either "on or off"-the sky is our 3D playground that we can play in as we please. There are already people flying wingsuits with HD freefliers and docking for points What's next? -Sitfly in a wingsuit? -Flat spin competitions?(most number of flat spins in 15 seconds AND you have to fly out of it) -Rodeo transfer race?(Least amount of time from exit that it takes a rodeo rider to go from the back of one wingsuiter to the other) -There are many more that people will think of Point is...We need to be flexible and be able to play together. We shoot ourselves in the foot every time we fight about beaurocracy. (And you can't fly with a bullet in your foot.) I think there is wisdom to go back to the basics "Plan your flock and dive your...er...plan?" and the rules should be: 1)Were you safe? 2)Did you do what you set out to do? 3)Do you have proof? 4)Do you owe beer? If the answer is "yes" to all of them (well maybe not 4) then the rest of it is squabbling for bragging rights. USPA can adopt whatever rules they want to judge a formation or whatever. On my dive, participants define failure and success. I see the rules as something that is there until something better comes along.(Like a condom in Boston?yech) I for one will stay on the sidelines and just watch the people who are figting over how to brag about your accomplishments because when you play with poop long enough, you start smelling. caw caw Checkyourgear There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
  14. 1. How does one become interested in the sport of Wing Suiting? How did you start? I fell into it. I ran with the wrong crowd. They bullied me into it. I didn't inhale. Seriously, I talked to a couple of first flight instructors at the dropzone and I have a friend who started at the same time. 2. Has your view of the sport changed since you have become involved seriously in it? Yes. the sky became a three dimensional flight plan. Not falling down a tube. I think it improved my FS skills too but most people tell me I still flail more than fly. 3. Is there still fear before you jump or are you confident in your abilities? I pee my pants every time I am in the door. My legs shake and my brain blanks. Seriously, it is not an either/or deal here. I am confident I can exit the plane and land safely. AND Fear exists on multiple levels. I think I keep it at manageable levels. 4. Do you have friends or family who oppose to this risk taking? Look up "Problems with whuffos". The answer is Yes. 5. When in the sport did you realize you were hooked to this rush? After the first time? What!!? Hooked? Rush? Slow your horses brother. With all due respect, you are being a bit forward here. Its like me asking you "At what point after murdering your landlord did you hide the body?" This is the definition of a bad question. Not hooked and the "rush" is happiness at doing something relaxing with some good people. 6. What’s next? Is there anything crazier you want to try? Next? Getting better at this whole falling through the air. Maybe instructional rating to be able to get some more people into the glorious joy. Crazier? What is crazy about this? Do you walk around weddings and ask people "Is there anything "normaler" you want to try?" 7. Have you ever had any close calls with disaster and if so how did it effect you? 2003 someone decided to go on a red light and almost got me, scary. Same year, went to a party and almost got fleeced into being the designated driver, Thank god one of the dudes was a Mormon!! Disaster avoided. Seriously, no 8. How much does it cost approximately per jump? Is this a financially tough sport? $54.82 seriously. I have the spreadsheet with all the expenses. I also have a post about my first boogie costs. I is nerdy that way. 9. How long do you hope to continue jumping? Are there any age restrictions? As long as I can. 10. How many times a year do you usually get to jump? 99.62 Jumps per year since May 2005. Again the nerdy comes out. I got the spreadsheet and all that. 11. 15. #138 I was one of the grad students in Collegiates last year. Came with 250 jumps, less than 3 years in the sport but more than 25 years old. I am glad to have had the opportunity to compete before this rule change. Thanks to the "VT B team" There are no dangerous dives Only dangerous divers
