  1. You dredged up a thread from 2005 to answer Tardo's joke after 13 years??? That is commitment.
  2. How would the Feds know? A we talking fun jumpers at night, or are we talking about tandem students and observers during the day. If jumpers are the jumpers dealing on the property, storing quantities that would attract attention? Are they using it discretely, or are they being assholes and drawing negative attention? If it was my business I would make it clear that at minimum there is no substance consumption on the premises by any time during operating hours.
  3. What would be the prevention here? Non-destructive testing at some interval? Magna-flux or x-ray? I think we all know that with metal parts there isn't always visible damage on the surface even though the part may have a major internal flaw.
  4. At my home DZ I don't every jump, but I know when all of the rigs get repacked, and we have a good handle on maintenance and rigging. If I go to a different DZ to lend a hand for the weekend, or over the winter, I take the time to check. As far as lack of gear checks on the ground, and handle checks... fuck that. It is their ass and their students ass on the line, don't follow their bad example. It is a really negligent and frankly stupid. I have caught things numerous times doing gear-checks, packers aren't infallible and there are even more ways you can mess up packing and closing a tandem rig. I have seen one come back from a major rigging loft with the 3-rigs all FUBAR. Check your gear, your life and your students life is depending on it. Especially as a new TI, don't let anyone rush you. They aren't going to be the ones listed in the incident report.
  5. Pilots and Safire II's would both also be good options to consider. The Sabre II will be slightly more aggressive, but you won't really notice a huge difference at that size and wing-loading, and all three would be good choices.
  6. Fine by me. I sold in July and the timing was right, and don't plan to purchase again for the next year or two. Rates will probably suck at that time, and I will never see the 3% 15 year rate that I had before but at least I will hopefully be in a good cycle of buying low again. I doubt we will see the 1980's double digit mortgage rates again, but I could be sorrily mistaken.
  7. Not here either. I don't think it is bad press if you are doing your EP's properly. I don't have a ton of tandem cutaways (*knock on wood*) but my students have often ended up posing with the cutaway and reserve handle for ground shots, and they certainly got their video. As I said before I don't think withholding this specific video would have been dishonest if the DZO also took the corrective action with this TI and explained to the student what occurred. Step 1 is owning up to the fuck up.
  8. Is it just me, or is a line or some other break needed in the way that the forum displays signatures. I could just be that I am seeing old pre-change signatures that look odd because of the way they were retained. Either way they blend right into the actual post content.
  9. We had been discussing this in the TI Instructors forum. Yes it makes the tandem instructor look very bad. His stellar exit, arching, and drogue toss is only bested by his astute judgement in releasing the video out into the wild. What do you mean when you ask about what happened after? Are you asking about retraining or sanction for the TI?
  10. Whoops. This popped up a few times this morning.
  11. Too bright and way too much white space on my desktop, holy eye strain batman!
  12. Please see your other post. You don't need two, unless you want to get flak from everyone about asking twice. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  13. Wing loading matters, until it doesn't. Yes, that isn't an ill-advised wing-loading, but only in a vacuum without considering any other factors. Controlling for canopy type, the 170 will have more forward speed and more descent speed than the 190 and if you aren't already flying the 190 well you should wait to fly the 170 because it is only going to compound the areas that you need to practice and improve on. It isn't that I would be calling your DZ to get in on the bounce bingo, I don't know anything about you other than what you typed, but people have gotten away with way worse. But... that really isn't the point. It is more an issue of learning and progression. You will build your basic canopy skills better with a slower progression on a slower canopy. It is easy to learn when things are going slower, and your brain isn't racing to keep one step ahead of the canopy. Your canopy skills for the rest of your skydiving career will build on the base skills you are learning right now. Get your hands on another demo canopy and do some more jumps that focus primarily on canopy flight. Also ask an instructor or an experienced jumper to film your landing and debrief you, or better yet take a Flight 1 canopy course. That is a much better than trying trial and error, because at your level of experience it is hard for you to know what you screwed up when the landing wasn't great. 14. Nope. But here's a recent picture of it relaxing in the couch. Dave Dave Be careful with that thing! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  15. The Sony's with the BOSS (balanced optical steady shot) system are rock solid in that regard. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  16. That is going to be pretty soft in there. The closing loop location on the icons can allow you to mis-size some, hell I had a 114 in a I5, but in hindsight it probably wasn't a great idea and I only took it on hop and pops and I tried to be a ninja with every movement in the plane. You could have a rigger make you up a pillow to take up some of the space in the main container. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  17. Can't speak for Perris, but the Eloy boogie is awesome. It isn't all partying. There is so much organizing going on during the day. I haven't been in a few years because of work commitments, but I had amazing trips in years past. The partying itself isn't a big distraction either. They have had a beer truck in the past that opened when the last load took off, but everyone is pretty laid-back about it. I don't recall much wing-suit organizing but maybe I wasn't paying attention. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  18. Are we watching the same video? He exited back towards the relative wind, and it isn't like he did a diving exit, or a gainer that would have transitioned into positioning him back into a good orientation to the relative wind on the hill. If he got back to the basics that we teach students would we even be talking about him right now? Up - down - prop - arch. Present into the relative wind, watch the plane fly away. A large percentage of students don't arch from their hips right out the door, especially if they are crouched down on exit like in an aircraft with a shorter door like a caravan. They leave knees bent and down. How can you place this on the student? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  19. I am going to send all my old miniDV tapes to legacy box. I bought a media conversion package on groupon for a pretty fair price, I figured it would be the easiest way of ever seeing those videos again. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  20. I get it! Good luck with the event! I have never travelled to Africa, so maybe next year if there is enough advanced notice. Please post pictures and about how the even turned out. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  21. December 2019?? This sounds rad, but trying to figure out how anyone would coordinate this trip if they first found out in November if we are talking this year.
  22. Hey Chris, I sent you a PM, but might as well follow up here since you are active in the thread. Is there any possibility that you will be refreshing a dual camera upper housing for your gloves to fit the new Gopro 7 black? I love my current setup from you, but every season my 3+ blacks are getting longer and longer in the tooth. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  23. Wasn't grandma a few years post Y-mod, I thought that was around 2012. The two fatalities before the near-miss with the grandmother video were what pushed the Y mod requirement. I forget when Strong started requiring it, but it was probably back in 2007-8. I get what you are saying Tony, but I don't think this is revealing anything new. The tandem commandments already cover all the elements of this jump that nearly killed the pair. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  24. Maybe because dishonestly doesent come off as natural to everyone? The camera did not malfunction. It worked perfectly fine and the student did pay for a video. If anything, I'd give the TI props for releasing a video that he knows he will take on a shit load of heat for, as opposed to trying his best to cover it up like nothing happened. He may have messed up big time, but if he is willing to release to the public a video showing his mistakes and he is willing to admit his mistakes, that puts him higher on the list than a lot of people I've met in my life. As usual, what the hell do you know. It doesn't have to be dishonest, you simply refuse the hand over the video. You explain what happened, and tell them that the video doesn't meet the drop zones standards. You refund all of the students money, you kiss the students ass, and you dig deep when you consider what happened and if the instructor can be retrained, or if maybe he should stick to fun jumping. You can also add hoping and praying that you have a good waiver, and that your manifest did all their diligence involving the waiver. The video does nothing good for tandem skydiving. As far as the instructor and the drop zone... They obviously sugar coated what happened, GREATLY, so the release of the video has nothing to do with full disclosure or honesty. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  25. Wow, where should we start? The great exit? The great drogue throw? The great execution of emergency procedures? Maybe with the thing that surprises me the most about these videos, why the hell would you let a copy of it get out to the student? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
