  1. http://usparachuteteam.org/disciplines/ws As of 11:00 p.m. EST, Scott Callantine has been voted as the Captain of the 2015 US Wingsuit Team. "We Are Sparta!"
  2. I have a Bolt, and it's not usable for skydiving. I wish it were. It's sketchy above 8K. h.265/HEVC is about half the load of h.264. Teradek (and others) are virtually immediately converting to .265 for a variety of reasons (.264 will also be available). we won't see a 4K live feed for a while, and few places have displays (yet) that can manage it. That said, even Walmart has bailed on HD now, in favor of 4K.
  3. Walk away from h.264; everyone else is/has. HEVC is where it's at, bro..
  4. You're applying too much stabilization. If you need THAT much...something else is the problem. Here is 50%stab, which is WAY too much for most things.
  5. At this point, this particular solution will not work for skydiving. There are solutions, but nothing small, nothing that is currently stable enough to use day in/day out, and cost is quite high. Frequency, power, and antenna specifics prevent Herocast from being a viable option. I'm very surprised to see them suggest at all, that 4000m would be "likely." Teradek has some answers, but again...cost is high. Editing on the "fly" isn't really viable either, as a file needs a closing header, so cuts aren't possible. video has to buffer to be seen, and in that process there are stops/starts. Cutting on the fly is exceptionally challenging, made easier only because we'd know what was "next" after an exit or deployment. Beyond that... Great idea for a problem that doesn't exist. Streaming to the ground however....is a great (and old) idea. It'll happen, just not right this moment.
  6. This is a fallacy. Every time you jump with someone you are trusting your safety to others. If you didn't trust your safety to others, maybe you should be jumping alone. Don't believe me? On a jump I could end up going low on the formation and deploy right below you (while you are filming the formation). You may or may not see me deploy. Your safety is in danger. You could be part of the formation or filming it and I'm a late diver. I'm late and trying to make up time and come in at 180 MPH and plow right into your back (from behind). Your safety is in danger. I could be learning to swoop and am setting up for that awesome 540 degree turn. I don't see you in the landing pattern below me and - you can guess the rest. Your safety is in danger. Moral of the story. DSE - you better trust me with your safety if you want to jump with me. Fair enough, taken out of context of the thread, you're entirely right (remember, I'm the guy now deaf in one ear due to an organizer putting a newbie into a complex formation, compounded by said newbie being stoned at the time). More properly stated in context of the thread, "Do you really want to trust your jump buddy to tell you when the fun is done and it's time to break off and deploy?" Wouldn't you rather be self-aware and self-reliant? Audibles are a great backup, but primary awareness comes from eyeballs and perhaps a visual alti.
  7. Actually, Adobe's stabilizer will crop AS MUCH as 10% of the image, not 90%, and it is quite usable. However... there are much better stabilizers out there should you need to stabilize. A solid platform rarely requires much stabilization. I haven't dug into PlayMemories to see how/if it will display the altitude that the app alleges to display, but then again, I don't use PM for anything at all anyway. If I get some free time, I'll see if I can figure it out. It is definitely in the Developer kit as a vendor embedded option. Yes, the X1000 is a terrific little camera.
  8. why 1080 and not 4K? 4K is hitting faster than HD did by roughly 4x. In 2016, it'll be the standard across the board for a person of your background and skill. If you'll be sticking with the camera for a while (seems like that's your MO) why not be well inside the cutting edge vs purchasing "outdated?"
  9. https://vimeo.com/113977394 Of course, the next argument is what is a "lightly loaded canopy"... I disagree. Red flies faster than blue, and orange flies longer than any other color.
  10. I guess you are talking about this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_4Z1M_iG8o. I don't think the helmet of the guy that appears in the larger part of the video has any audible pocket. I don't know about the other one, but to me it looks like none of them had audibles. Nope, not the right video (and I'm too lazy to spend my time overseas searching just now). However, both jumpers in the video I refer to are wearing Dytters. I know both jumpers; we've talked about how it all happened. It's easy in the heat of the moment to lose awareness. True, more audibles in more people mean more likely awareness, but again...do you really want to be trusting YOUR safety to others? Truly, don't you want to be self-reliant?
  11. The audio is about the same as the CX (same mics), assuming you remove the waterproof mic plugs on the waterproof case.
  12. In the past, the smaller action cameras weren't as useful as the bigger CX series. That has shifted, and I'm a fan of the small AS and FDR series cameras. Both are better in resolution with the built in/designed wide lens and stabilization. You lose playback view, but most don't care about that.
  13. Somewhere on YouTube is a video of a two way, both of them lose alti awareness and both of them have audibles. Both of them have AAD fires. Both survive, but do you really, truly want to trust others with your life? What, for examle, if everyone decides they're having a great time and ignore a deck, and someone has an AAD fire, putting them into you or someone else on the group? Use the eyes that evolution gave you. Maybe train yourself to see that alti on your wrist, even in FS formation jumping? You can always use a forearm mount to make it easier to see. Either way, depending on an audible is short-sighted. They fail from time to time.
  14. If the ActionCam series would work, I'd consider that route. Small, amazing quality, stabilized, lots of options.
  15. Whether arms or legs are collapsed makes no difference to the descent rate of the canopy. Granted, I *assume* it's a highly loaded canopy. It's Luke Aikens. I've seen Luke fly several times, and never under a "lightly loaded canopy." But for the sake of argument, you're correct in that I'm making an assumption. Either way, this sort of video proves nothing, it's just a fun visual to see.
  16. Visit the website. Look at the video demos on their website. It's terribly compressed. You're right, there is "no reason it has to be a crappy camera" but it is. Likely for a reason of cost. No, it's not Hollywood. Spending that much money on a locked-in, poor-quality solution seems silly, Hollywood or not. For a much lesser cost, a much greater camera can be sourced.
  17. We see this at practically every Performance Comp...been a known thing for years Take a peek at some of the GPS logs; it's very clear where in speed rounds, competitors "pop" up sometimes as much as a couple of hundred feet from their glide path. As far as this video goes...a wingsuiter flying flat, viewed from a highly-loaded canopy descending at a rapid rate does not suggest the wingsuiter is flying "up." The "up" is a very temporary state of flight, not remotely sustained. Spend some time looking at the speed rounds on Paralog. You'll find quite a few where there are relatively significant "climbs."
  18. all but one are for real/have been jumped, yes. https://www.creativecow.net/interstitial.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibrary.creativecow.net%2Fspottedeagle_douglas%2FPOV-Camera-Testing%2F1&id=0 http://www.dropzone.com/news/Gear/Best_Action_Camera_2014_-_Ultimate_POV_Camera_Shootout_1027.html
  19. A-Do you have any idea how few Pilatus Porters are around for anyone to attempt this? B-Are you aware that the insurance company that insures most turbine aircraft in the USA have come straight out and said that if there is any evidence of prox flying or docking wingsuits with aircraft, they will immediately cancel insurance on said aircraft? Between those two thoughts, there is very litle reason for anyone to become excited. Congrats, you've found an ideal speed, and it's nice to have the reference. There. Controversy started. You're welcome?
  20. The Elsinore system is a full lap belt/goes around your waist.
  21. I'm pretty proud of my friends that earned slots on the team, and believe the USA will be well-represented at the World Cup. Hoping to see either Scott Callantine or Steve Hubbard knock Spike Harper off the podium.
  22. Because it's super-crappy video?
  23. This is one of the frailties of MFT lenses, however...with a tight aperture (the only way you'll have focus with a UAV), focus is infinite. HOWEVER...the *primary* reason for the Micro, is high-quality UAV work, and one *can* control focus with it. The Pocket doesn't do 4K.
  24. I use the pocketcam regularly; it too, goes into Resolve for posting, but more and more, I'm using LUTs that I built for Vegas, and it's more or less "instant." The attached shots are from Vegas 13's output, split for before/after. It's just 4:2:2 ProRes vs RAW (except one shot, and I defy anyone to know which one :) I'm in love with the process, now that it's *mostly* a one-button add. These shots have not been retouched, they're just straight LUTs that I designed and have stored as presets.
