  1. Yeah, in fairness, I've been calling from 3 timezones away, and just before, and all week after the Xmas holiday, so they probably were off for the boogie. That didn't dawn on me til just now. I love my TalonFat Sucker, and they were great to work with when it needed to be modded. Since we're on the subject, sorta, I've decided against cut-in laterals based both on how non-cut Voodoo's feel, and my Talon, which is cut-in. However, I'm interested if anyone has a different viewpoint. I liked the cut-in on other rigs, but on the RI rigs, it doesn't seem as comfy.
  2. A 1080 HDV grab is 1.62 Mp. The HC3 shoots 4Mp, but as Pops mentioned, you can only shoot to card or tape, and it's not convenient unless you have a proprietary LANC from Sony, and even then...you'll need to modify. The V1U allows for a slightly easier mod, but it's a significantly larger camcorder.
  3. Froggy, thanks for that, I couldn't find it online. Odd, talking with a local Voodoo dealer, they say the Silhouette 190 will "just fit" the Voodoo V4, but the Paragear chart suggests this is not so. I wish the Rigging Innovations folks were more accessible by phone. Bad enough you have to wait nearly 5 months to get the container.
  4. I'm ordering a Voodoo/Rigging Innovations, and have a 190 Silhouette with Micron lines.
  5. I'm ready to order a container for a new main, but the container mfg website only indicates cubic inch volume. The manufacturer of my main doesn't list cubic inches, only square feet. What am I missing?

    Skydive Hawaii

Over the Xmas holidays, I spent 5 days at Skydive Hawaii. I went next door first, as it's regionally known as the "upjumper place." Not one person said "hello" or any other form of greeting, even though it was clear I was an upjumper. So, went to Skydive Hawaii even though I didn't really want to go there. I had barely set foot in the door before Mary had said "Hello" and then introduced me to manifest and to a couple of others on the DZ. Manifest hooked me up with another upjumper. With only one exception, everyone there was very friendly and welcoming, both staff and upjumpers. On the weekdays, there were only a couple upjumpers and lots of tandems, but that made it easy to get onto loads. The one exception is a local upjumper that was overly filled with her own sense of self-importance and skill, and when she had an issue with me pulling in place (I was flying camera slot) she made sure everyone on the DZ knew it on landing. A couple of other jumpers and a staff member all loudly commented that she should go home. After she left, and during the following week, others were quite open about "That's not how we do things around here, she's just a nasty person." I was told straight up that it was possible that a tandem could potentially take my slot. It never happened. Packers are out of this world good and fast by comparison to my experiences at several other DZs around the world. Prices are right. I wish they had food there at the DZ, but Haleiwa is very close and you can't beat the Kua 'iina Burger joint there. Thanks to Mary, Frank, Jonny, Noel, Jake, Ben, and others at Skydive Hawaii for a great time over the holidays.
  7. Are they still available, and attractive? Cheating on your wife may be a crime, depending on which law you're speaking of. "Crime" can be used synonymously with "sin" in some contexts, which is again why I try to avoid the word, simply because of the potential connotations. You're correct, of course, it it's properly used form, "crime," "wrong," and "sin" all hold exclusive meanings. But then so does "sucks," "garbage," "crap," "junk." English sucks. It's a language without a cultural foundation from which everyone originates. IMO, everyone should be forced to speak Dine', the most commonly spoken indigenous language in the US. It's impossible to have these sorts of ambiguous or multi-meaning words.
  8. I acquiese to your more articulate expression. I choose not to use the word "sin" only because it's one of those buzzwords most often used by Christians. Were it not for that quality, it would be a common word in my lexicon as well. However, I don't know that "wrong" necessarily discounts or ignores volition or will. It could equally be argued (depending on one's moral code) that cheating on your wife is a crime as much as a wrong. Robbing a bank is definitely a crime, but may not be a sin. Mormons believe in a context of "Lying for the Lord." My experience is that most believers in the bible exercise an identical code at one point or another. Are they sinning? Committing a crime? Or merely behaving in a wrongful fashion? I'd argue all three, but once you toss the religious lexicon in there, it takes on an entirely new direction and value.
  9. I would argue that doing "right" comes just as naturally as doing "wrong." For some however, the absence of "wrong" doesn't equate to the existence of "right." Frans deWaal, a Christian primatologist/zoologist, has written quite a bit about the genetics involved in primates (and humans) that allows for self-sacrifice, survivability, compassion, etc. His opinion as both a Christian and a zoologist, is that morals to a great extent, are genetic. In other words, ethics and morality are biological, not spiritual.
  10. so in your vocabulary - you refuse to even come up with a secular definition of either 'evil' or 'sin' sounds a bit frustrating to me and turns this part of the discussion away from substantive talk and into a semantics contest I don't see it as semantics at all. "Evil" and "sin" are vocabularies of the Christian faith. "right" and "wrong" are from the vocabularies of mankind. Don't you feel it's necessary to establish the language of the topic to as to set the tenor? The Sanatana Dharma, which is indisputably the oldest writing of "Gods Law" mentions nothing of "sin" nor "evil" but rather what is right and wrong with regard to human interaction within society. There are varying degrees of "right" and "wrong," which in my opinion, closely echo the degrees of "sinfulness" of Christians. Where my difference lies, is that I think it's beyond utterly ridiculous to assert that we're born in sin or as a result of sin. That's just a silly scare tactic that can be philosophized or debated to death, and still end up with no valid conclusion. So...no. I don't believe in sin. I believe that humans are capable of horribly wrongful acts towards each other and the earth, however. Is it a sin to dig a hole in the earth for accessing uranium and leaves a wasteland that kills every one that walks through it? Or is it just plain "wrong?" If it is a church that digs the hole, is it still "just plain wrong?" or is it a grievious sin? If the church knows they've dug a hole that kills people and does nothing about it, are they guilty of murder, but if the profits go to "supporting the Lords work," is it no longer a sin but rather just an "oops?"
  11. I'd wager my sister that the definition for "church" was written by a Christian. Yet I capitulate;I don't attend a "church" as I was born in the midst of the place used for worship in my particular case. We refer to it as a "church" too. But their sure ain't no blue-eyed, smooth-nosed, blonde haired, model-quality Jewish dude playing the role of "the Christ" on our walls. Our form of worship dates far back by comparison.
  12. My, my my. aren't we all full of piss and vinegar, today. I assumed the OP was referencing Christians because following the statement about believing in God, she posted BUT unlike most Christians, believes in the possibility of ALIENS and EVOLUTION. If she wasn't addressing Christians, what was the point of that phrase??? Also, her question about what CHURCH to attend was indicative of who she was talking about. Or are there other religions that believe in God, where worship is done in churches? Emphasis mine... Are you serious with this question? Or does "church" only connote buildings with crosses on them? Synagogues, temples, mosques fit into the realm of "churches?" If so, then more than 2/3 of the world worships God without the component of "Jesus, the Christ."
  13. A prophet is a fictional entity, a whackjob is anyone who believes they are a fictional entity. A prophet is a whackjob that hasn't been exposed yet. Seriously...how is it that guys like Swaggert, Robertson, etc get into these positions? Because they say agreeable things. They get enough of a following, they start to venture farther out on the branch. Eventually the branch snaps, and they go from seer to basket case. But the basic tenet that fueled their rise to "stardom" remains the same. I believe that's known as "false idolatry."
  14. Note that rate is in pounds sterling, not USD. 500 pounds is 970.00 USD per day. 250 pounds is 480.00 USD per day 125 pounds is 242.00 per day. (all rounded off to dollar) That's about right for non-big name shooters. It's also in addition to all/any media costs, generally T/L are not included in those rates. It's slightly higher than the US avg, but only slightly so.
  15. Hi Brian, yup, same guy. I've played with this Oregon Scientific, at Govt Expo, and got some files from the cam from another scuba journo. Not too impressed; it really has some nasty chroma artifacts. But, it does get wet, it's cheap, and delivers an interframe format.
  16. http://www.elmo.co.jp/suv-cam/en/product/index.html just starting to ship in Australia and Japan, although it was announced a while back. Just rec'd one for testing, but it looks pretty fun. 33 mins of record time at near-PAL resolution, only 25fps at the moment, so perfect for PAL folks, and great for 24p conversion for the NTSC folk. About $800.00 USD
  17. What's pathetic is your attempt to swing the discussion to one of race/culture because that's a place where only subjectivity can reign, objectivity and intellect can't play there. That's messed up, IMO. Said it before...the problem lies not with the faith, but the faithful. I have a healthy respect for anyone that lives by any rote and ritual so long as they're not trying to cram it down my throat. I have a healthy respect for Christians that are like super porn-freaks addicts. Keep it in the privacy of your home where it offends no one, and we're all happier and society functions better. If this forum is any indicator as a microcosm of society, it's no wonder we're at war, and will likely be at war for a long, long time. I think that's called "Self-fulfilling prophecy."
  18. Butisn't that what ALL Christian religions do? Prey on the weak and needy? Show me one that doesn't. All of these religions have monstrously wealthy leaders, and none of them are ashamed of it. There are many that even go so far as to proclaim that being wealthy is a sign from God that you're living right. tithing, donations of time, going to foreign nations to "help" (you have to join our church to get help though). It all boils down to $$ if you're Christian. Pay to play, payola, etc are all illegal in business, but in religion? He who has the most $$$ wins heaven.
  19. C'mon, believing in the possibility of aliens existing on other worlds is far, far removed from believing in what that freakshow of an organisation spouts. I think that your answer is as much an issue of perspective and willingness to make/not make logical determinations as Christians or anyone else does. I don't see a lot of difference in believing that alien beings can transport their intelligence to Earthlings being any more or less far-fetched in believing in a book that multiple people wrote via proxy about events they heard about 3-4th hand, that predicts events 2000 years off. Hell, you can't even play "telephone" without someone screwing up the message. Scientologists just believe they get it straight. Christians get it from a source proven to be tainted. So...maybe Scientologists gots something we just don't have enough $$ to understand? (personally, I agree w/you, BTW)
  20. That's why I said Oral was proven to not be a prophet. Funny thing, the few prophets of the OT were not the type to live the high life as the modern day prophets do. I seriously doubt any of these modern day hucksters would want the job as prophet if we did to them what they did to "prophets" of old. From the Article: PAT: "I have a relatively good track record," he said. "Sometimes I miss." Obviously Pat needs to go back to Bible college. __________________________________ You nailed that one! I don't think, any of them would want to be stoned to death for their actions. As for Pat... he needs to just go away. I think, Oral, already has. That phony, Al Sharpton (look at his track record) is another one who needs to go-away! You can't say that! It's "censorship." Just ask SteveOrino. Or jesusorino. Or Godorino. More seriously, check out http://www.100prophecies.org/ for a list of prophecies that have been "fulfilled." Things like "The sun will rise, and the moon will set" and so forth. Kevin Maney did pretty good with his 2006 prophecies, but they're called "predictions." url "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unfulfilled_historical_predictions_by_Christians"]Bigger prophetic failures[/url] don't include Robertson claiming Bush by a "blowout" in November. Yep, the closest election in history, fraught with failed chads, broken voting machines, etc...Bush won because "God elected me." Does anyone else find it ironic and a kinda whacked that prophets of today are false prophets if their predictions don't come true, but prophets of 2000 years ago are given a pass? On all accounts, not just the return of jesus?
  21. I'd recommend he take a close look at Scientology amongst others.
  22. Chris, If I might interject... Questions are one thing. Statements are another, especially when you have little grasp of the reality vs the intellectual aspects of the discussion. Hard as it is, might I suggest that you: ~figure out specific questions as they apply to your current level of skill, ask them. ~sit back, move away from the keyboard. ~let the knowledgeable, experienced people that are very willing and able to answer your questions do so ~Allow the answers to percolate without questioning their answers? It'll all make more sense if you just step back, listen, and think. I know I've learned a basketful just reading the Incidents thread without comment. I'm so swoop-ignorant, I don't even know the right questions to ask, and when I do know the right questions, I'll not be asking them here, I'll be asking people who can see my landing skills with their own eyes. Wouldn't that make you feel more safe too? You'll be able to consider learning swoops in another few hundred jumps. Take a canopy course from a pro like Jon Tagle, Scott Miller, Brian Germain. That alone will help you a LOT, and help you understand how it all fits together. In the meantime, might I suggest that you concern yourself with where YOU are in the pattern? Cuz if you don't understand it clearly and cleanly, you're as much if not more of a danger to your fellow skydivers than the guy that you're worried about maybe hooking into you.
  23. Not quite true... The Canon 24f format isn't totally supported (yet) nor is the 24p in the Sony V1U (yet). The really exciting news though, is that the CineForm codec will shortly be available on the Mac, therefore allowing the silly HDV/AIC conversion to Quicktime to be escaped. That said, I'd guess that fewer than a dozen V1's are being used in skydiving, and given the issues of the HV10 and the Canon A1 sharing the same OIS, none of those are being used, so other than me being a stickling prick, MB38's answer is correct (I'm assuming you're also the person who emailed me).
