  1. I jump a 98 Triathlon made with the South African ZP "Gelvenor". I never knew how awesome that fabric was. I am demo'ing a Spectre and just packed it for the first time. Holy crap, that is the slickest piece of snot I have ever stuffed into a d-bag. I realize that part of the issue is the 300 jumps on my Tri versus this nearly new Spectre, but it is clear that the fabric is the biggest factor. The Tri fabric is almost tacky when pressed against itself and the new ZP is super slippy. It seems to me that Gelvenor is a much better fabric than standard ZP and now even Aerodyne uses stardard ZP. What's the reason that Gelvenor is no more? Cost? - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  2. Regretfully, I'm going to miss it. My wife will be running the Phoenix marathon that weekend, and I will be there to cheer her on....and of course jump at Eloy the day before and after. If it weren't for the scheduling conflict, I'd be there! It sounds like a good boogie...with cheap jumps, 2 planes, the film festival and all. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  3. I hear the 4.0 is a big improvement, but I have a 98 Tri without the mod and it is a great canopy. No hard opening (yet) and good flare. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  4. I love it!! Nice! - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  5. OK. That is easy. I was expecting to have to start/stop it besides cutting it on/off. THANKS! - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  6. I'm sure that I am just overlooking the obvious...but I need some basic help on using the Fortrex 201. I had a Forerunner 301 and used it for my tracking jumps in the past and it was quite 'intuitive' to use (i.e. press start to start before jumping and press start to stop when I land; reset and repeat each jump; get home and download each dive) I have been to tracking derby and used their instructions to set the read time to every second on my new Foretrex. But...how do I start and stop the foretrex for each jump. Can you record multiple dives before downloading? I'm sure that I am being really dense here...but your help is appreciated. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  7. Thanks...I knew you would understand that my keen eyes are way more accurate than any alti. Why should I not attempt? Come on, maybe none of us on the ground or your group in the air can tell the difference between 1500 and 1200 but there is a HUGE difference in your proposed pull alti of 3K versus what we all witnessed. Whatever though. I actually don't care. I support your right to pull low, hook youself into the ground or any other thing you want to do. I only spoke up to defend the DZ because I feel you have misrepresented the facts. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  8. OK...I should probably just stay out of this but... I was at Titusville on Sunday (the day in question). Lets discuss the facts and my observations. FACTS: Jumps were from 15K+ There is no rule (that I was informed of) to pull above the BSR rules. (I pulled at 3.5K) Cloud Layer was light/broken and between 4.5-3K. I arrived when the first load was in the air. I (BTW-I am not the "very experienced skydiver" who chatted with manifest) and several other observers watched as a group of jumpers pulled and one fell considerably further and pulled. MY OBSERVATIONS: The majority of the deploying divers did so at what looked to me to be between 4k-3K. The last one to pull, was in the saddle at no more than 1.500ft (probably
  9. My visit was only on a weekday, so I can't speak to what a busy weekend day is like, but to my suprise, there were plenty of jumpers and plenty of loads to keep me happy even on a Monday! The facilities are right up there with Perris and the like: nice bar/restaraunt, store, nice packing area, huge landing area with a lot of potential outs; nice chilling areas, etc. I guess they have an Otter and Skyvan running on the weekend, but during the week they had the PAC750 running and it was REALLY nice. Not as fast as the SpaceCenter King Air, but still pretty darn fast and VERY nice. The people there during my visit were all nice and I had no problem finding someone to jump with. All in all, DeLand is an absolute must visit DZ. I only wish I could have had more days to spend here.
  10. I only jumped here for one day, but I had a good time. The King Air is super fast and gets to 15K+ in less than 15 minutes. The facilities were adequate and the locals were nice. Things were kind of slow on the Sunday I visited; 1 hour between loads. The landing area is nice and big. Off airport outs are few if you were to get a bad spot. There were also quite a few ultralights about during my visit. All in all, it is a great place to visit to experience the fast flights to 15K+!
  11. I do try to roll my shoulders and somewhat cup my body. I think palms up does help with that position. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  12. Skydiving Avoid doing anything stupid! Avoid hurting myself or others! Avoid people who are doing anything stupid! Avoid letting anyone else hurt me! Have Fun!!! Maximize my tracking skills with and without my PF tracking suit. (Try to get 1.3 glide and
  13. Yup! I wasn't happy with what I got off of the Forerunner. It seemed to work OK for some jumps (when used with google earth), but I really like the detailed info that trackingderby.com is giving people who use the Foretrex 201, so I am definitely getting one of those soon. And then...it's time to save up for a wingsuit course and suit (I know I still need about 130 more jumps...but give me 6 months, and I'll be there.) - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  14. 1.3-1.4 Sounds good. You would get between 2.5-3 Miles on a jump from 14K. I'll have to try to loosen the legs a bit. Anyway, I'll definitely have to keep experiementing...I'm only getting glide ratios of about .9 to one so far. I could kind of tell that there was a trade off at some point between minimum fall rate and maximum glide. Maybe I can talk some of the part-time birdmen to fly with me soon and see how I do. Eitherway, playing with this suit is way FUN. BTW-I'm 6'2" and about 225 out the door. What GPS device are you using. I'm using my wifes Forrunner and it gives some inconsistent readings and will only record once every 3 seconds and doesn't work with tracking derby. I'm going to buy a Fortrex 201 soon. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  15. I recently got a Phoenix-Fly tracking suit (pants and jacket) and have been learning to fly it. My best to date (8 jumps so far) is an average vertical speed of 77MPH (SAS per protrack) with a minimum speed of 57MPH. I've noticed that flying palms up and arms at 45 degrees (not next to body and not 90 degrees out from shoulders) with super stiff legs and arms pushing down to be lower than torso seems to work best. I've flown several times with GPS and have logged distances up to 1.45 Miles. I'm super new at this though...what has worked best for you? Any other tips on maximizing time/distance on these suits? THanks! - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  16. Skydive Mesquite is indeed the only dropzone to consider if you live or are visiting Las Vegas. The others are just tandem factories without a commitment to the sport. Mesquite is different and is a real dropzone with lots of great people. The scenery from altitude is the best I have experienced thus far in the sport (although I'm sure some of the ocean side DZ's could compete). The DZ is in the small town of Mequite which host some of the most dramatic desert scenery (and golf courses) in country. From altitude you can see the edge of Lake Mead, The Virgin River Gorge, Lime Kiln Canyon, The Town of Mequite, and some of the coolest desert landscapes you will ever see (think the surface of Mars). Mequite host a Grand Caravan from October-April(ish) that flies to 13AGL pretty quickly and does quite a few loads a day on the weekends and holidays. Brad, the DZO, host 3-4 boogies a year and I've only heard great things about them all. I've experienced one boogie thus far and it was cool. There are a variety of Free Flyers and Belly Flyers and I'm certain any visitor will have no problem finding someone to jump with. The DZ has a very open group of locals and is still small enough to ensure that everyone knows everyone, talks to everyone, and welcomes the newcomers. No DZ is perfect, and the only downsides I see to Mesquite are that the landing area is kind of small, the facilities and packing area are not super nice or huge (when compared to some of the big DZ's)but they are adequate. Also the Summers are freaking hot (but the trade off there is that we're jumping comfortably all winter long)!
  17. The tour sounds like the best plan to me. I would suggest the South Western Tour: Eloy, Elsinore, Perris, Mesquite, Moab, etc Although I'm sure that Florida would be fun too: SpaceCenter, Deland, etc. Of course you could always just live at Eloy during that time...that is the time of the HOLIDAY Boogie (balloons, heli's, skyvan, otter, etc etc).... But then again...there is also a HOLIDAY Boogie at Perris (andt they are jumping the Jet).... Oh decisions decisions.... - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  18. I'll be ther by 10AM! Whoohoo! Here we go! - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  19. Yup! And, It was a beutiful day at Mesquite today. Cool, Clear, and No Wind. Kind of slow but we got in a few jumps. So now I just gotta' get through 4 days of work...and then it's time to jump the Caravan! - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  20. I'm sure there will be many more....I'm just not sure anyone looks at this section of the forum very often. I didn't until this thread was moved from "general skydiving". - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  21. I went Saturday for the first time since spring and only the 5th or 6th time this year. And that is why I missed out on the only good skydiving day this weeknd. I used to climb multiple times per week, but its now gotten hard to balance all my hobbies. After 10+ years of climbing pretty hard...skydiving just seems so much more fun these days. My wife will keep me climbing on a occassion though...as she can join in on the fun...skydiving will never be for her. Maybe a tandem every couple of years...but thats it. There is a great climbing spot on the other side of mesquite...you can clearly see it on jumprun and in freefall. It's called limekiln canyon. A picture of the main wall is attached. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  22. Yup. I think that guy is going to be around a lot this season! He's a low-timer but he's learning more every jump! I can hardly wait for the Caravan to arrive! I know...and there was no wind in Vegas when I left and I just knew it would be a perfect day for skydiving in Mesquite...Oh well it got me out of the bed at least. Some of the pictures are from Red Rocks, one is Arrow Canyon (half way to Mesquite) and another is from the foothills of Mt. Charleston. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  23. 10 days from today baby! - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
  24. Here are a couple of pics of me climbing.....before I started skydiving on the weekends.... I have no good skydiving pics yet...hmm..maybe that JT guy at the DZ will get some of me this season. edit..yes...the moon is doctored on the first pic. - - - I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
