  1. And how do you think a lot of jumping was financed in the 80's? Read the post in history & trivia about Cowboys Caravan. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  2. True but... In 1974, when Otters first became available for jumping in Perris, a lift to 12,500 was $8.50. Now it's $25, or a 3X increase. In 1973, A square canopy cost about $600. Now $1800 seems about average. Again, a 3X increase. In 1974, I bought a new Pinto Station Wagon for under $3,000. Try to buy a new car for under $9,000 now! Prices have gone up more than 3X. In 1974, Congress passed a bill providing for a gradual increase from the prevailing $1.60 per hour to $2.30 per hour by 1976. In 2007 it was $5.85. Wages have gone up more than 3X. In general, skydiving prices have gone up less than the average inflation. It isn't really that bad! What do you want to do, die with $ left in your bank account? Blue skies! 3. gary- There were some articles in Parachutist in the early 70's. I'll look them up when I get home. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  4. As a CFI I get to do a number of aircraft check outs and flight reviews. As far as I am concerned, all the licensing process does is weed out some of the incompetents. Hope that makes you more comfortable next time you get into an airplane. BSBD harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 5. http://www.historyingranite.org/ Made it a clicky -- Note that the stained glass window in the church is the PI logo! "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  6. Jacques Istel made page one, column one of the L. A. Times http://www.latimes.com/news/la-me-felicity16apr16,1,1168125.story Actually got to jump there about a year ago. Istel hosted a dinner, dress was either black tie or jump suit. I rolled up my booties. Blue Skies! Harry L. "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 8. What's wrong with him being 60 but thinking like a 30 year old? More stable, and better able to be protective. 9. I remember doing that many times flying between Chicago and New York for holidays. As far load factors, I remember one flight on a 747 that was almost empty. The stews got on our case for tossing a frisbee around the section that had only 4 college students in it. Also something to add to the "skydiving experience" thoughts. It was common to jump a modified military canopy as a main back then. I made my first jump in 1969, bought a military surplus rig with a modified 28' canopy (still in my garage) and didn't buy a ParaCommander until 1973. Also, it was common to take observers on jump planes, and they would be issued pilot emergency rigs (the NB-6 is one type) and given a short "first jump course" on what to do if they bailed out. In November, 1970, a friend with no skydiving experience known to me, accompanied me to the DZ and took this photo of me. Right after he took the photo, he handed the camera to another observer in the plane and followed me out and managed to find and pull the ripcord and land safely on the DZ. You know the help wanted sign "No Experience Necessary?" It could have applied here. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 10. For what it's worth, I have a Feb. 1958 ripstop C-9 in my garage. The first one I ever owned. My guess is that nylon was in use by the end of WW-2. "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  11. Any time something goes wrong, the FAA can, and often does, hold up this one: ********* Title 14: Aeronautics and Space PART 91—GENERAL OPERATING AND FLIGHT RULES Subpart A—General § 91.13 Careless or reckless operation. (a) Aircraft operations for the purpose of air navigation. No person may operate an aircraft in a careless or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another. *********** On the other hand, it seems to me that a pilot would be absolved of responsibility by saying "the passenger was warned of the hazards of this type of exit and did it anyway." The hazards of exiting a Beech in a climb, as well as the ways to minimize the risk, are commonly known. By the time jumper has an "A" license, the jumper is responsible for asking if there are any specific exit procedures when jumping an unfamiliar aircraft. Skydiving is inherently dangerous. If you chose to go against someone's safety advice, it becomes your responsibility, not the pilot's. Same if you are faced with an unfamiliar situation and don't ask for advice. 12. "dark" parachuting humor was probably first recorded before you were born. In case you haven't heard them, listen to "Blood on the Risers" and "Beautiful Streamer" recorded in 1958. The songs were probably many years old by then: http://www.west-point.org/greimanj/west_point/songs/as/index.html BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? 19. On my very first load flying static liners, the static line snagged on something and the pilot chute took off while the student was still on the step. As an experienced jumper, I had heard of such things and just stomped on the right rudder to slip the horizontal stab out of the way of the pilot chute. The student had an otherwise uneventful opening and canopy ride. The jump master bought me a beer that night. Oh, the good old days! BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there?
