  1. Honestly I don't know I never had a chance to compare them. But based on the specs the 5D's full frame sensor should perform lot better in low light. Also the larger image sensor can provide a more shallow depth of field. In this case most likely AF is required (since in skydiving very hard to maintain the distance in a few inches limit...) and I don't know yet how the Mark-II handles that.
  2. Spot, These two cost about $500: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/841023-REG/Blackmagic_Design_HYPERD_PT2_HyperDeck_Shuttle_2_SSD.html http://www.ebay.com/itm/OCZ-Agility-3-120GB-Internal-Solid-State-Drive-AGT3-25SAT3-120G-SSD-NEW-SEALED-/320853717015?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab45f3017 They can do the job right?
  3. ...I just got one too ...and a Canon 50mm f1.2 L lens for a price of the Mark-III body only
  4. Spot, Thank you very much for the info! I wish if the new Canon Mark-III could output uncomprresed video too through its HDMI, but it doesn't The new Nikon D800 does though...
  5. Every year a a bunch of new cameras, file formats, compressions and etc. come to the market. It's hard to keep up with as we know... Tape is pretty much dead. But there were cameras made with still up to date capabilities or beyond, except their recording medium. For example the Sony V1U, a kick-ass camcorder which couldn't utilize its true capabilty because of the lack of high data rate recording devices. I just realized that now days we can buy SSD HDMI recording systems for an affordable price. For example a Balck Magic2 enclosure and a 128-160Gb SSD drive can be purchased for about $500. This means a "good old" Sony V1U (and many other camcorders) can record true progressive 1080x1920 uncompressed 4:2:2 video vs. HDV onto tape which is MPEG2 1080x1440 in interlaced stream. Most of those external systems also allow compressed recording, but the file format is still lot better than HDV or today's AVCHD. Further more these recorders allow editing directly from their drive on most NLE systems. So it all seems to me recording externally through HDMI makes those cameras "better" than they were in their own time. DSE and the other few experts please corret me ifmail] I'm wrong here!
  6. You two should be burned at the stake for your comments! ...just kidding
  7. Finally, Canon announced the 5D MarkIII today. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_iii From some aspects it's awesome and from other aspects it's a bit disappointing. Here's a chart to compare to the 5D MarkII and Nikon D800: http://blog.planet5d.com/2012/03/canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-vs-canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-vs-nikon-d800/
  8. It took 2-2.5 billion years (ever since the first living things appeared on this planet) to have all our carbon based energy source (coal, oil, natural, gas) generated and accumulated. Our industrialized human society sent a significant chunk of this 2-2.5 billion years worth deposits back into Earth's atmosphere in the form of CO2 only in 150 years. If we draw a timeline of 2.5 billion years, 150 years will only look like a tiny dot or a "flash of a moment" if you will. Burn a large portion of those fossil fuels in a blink of an eye gotta have some consequences. Every part of our "civilized" life (even typing this comment) 100% depends on energy which is most likely coming from a fossil based source. The entire structure of our economy, society, and just generally the way of our today's life is standing upon fossil fuel based energy. Because of that it would be impossible switch over to something else in a very short period of time. Understandably there's a lot of blanketing over this issue. Any major change in our current energy policy would lead to an unimaginably great political and economical changes in an unpredictable way. If we do nothing about reducing our fossil fuel usage, the 2.5 billion years vs. 150 factor can make a sudden stop to our "the way as we know" human civilization. To make radical changes can't work because of the radical political and economical consequences... I guess the best we can do is to consider these issues and start gradually phasing out fossil fuel based energy sources and replace them with something else. There's lot of currently suppressed solutions out there. I hope it makes sense.
  9. Here it is, the new Nikon D800: http://www.nikon.com/news/2012/0207_dslr_01.htm It seems to me bad ass. I can't wait to see Canon's respond. The 5D mark-II replacement was due at last fall. According with the rumors it will happen soon (late Feb. early March). I hope the new Canon full frame model will be just as cool (or even better) than this Nikon D800
  10. Here it is all of you CReW dogs. The DVD is ready and available of this recent Skydive Arizona camp. The disc contains Kirk's camera's footage as well. Please send me a private message or contact me through my website http://laszloimage.com/ if you're interested! Thank you everybody for the great time! BlueS! -Laszlo-
  11. Spot, Thank you for the info! That JVC 4K camera looks very promising. So a whole new era begins again right? 4K (or even higher) cameras, displays, delivery formats, codecs, and etc... We just sorted out the 1080 and the AVCHD
  12. "The days of optical media are numbered" I know for sure Skydive New England delivers their tandem videos and stills on a thumb drive, they don't burn DVDs anymore. The drives are provided by the DZ to the camera staff. My Bluray player is only 2.5yrs old...
  13. Yes, I have the video as well of the wrap. The DVD should be done by the end of this week.
  14. Dogs and pups, Thanks for Brian Pangburn and Kirk VanZandt to organize another CReW camp in Eloy, AZ (Skydive Arizona). 15. Some photos from the CReW camp held at Skydive Arizona. The organizers were Brian Pangburn and Kirk VanZandt. http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_06_12%20051.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_06_12%20045.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_07_12%20028.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_07_12%20087.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_05_12%20019.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_07_12%20050.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_07_12%20061.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_07_12%20062.htm http://laszloimage.com/2012/January_2012/pages/Jan_08_12%20085.htm ...and the attachment is the best action sequence
  16. Thank you for the info Spot! ps. for jumping the FS100 would be my choice right now because of the cost/weight/performance ratio
  17. Spot, I read about this new Canon C300PL right after its announcement. Based on the specs it seems to me it’s pretty similar to Sony’s FS100U http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/761578-REG/Sony_NEX_FS100U_NEX_FS100E_Super_35mm_Sensor.html The major difference is the Canon can record 50Mbps 4:2:2 onto a memory card vs. Sony’s 28Mbps. But apparently Sony is capable to record 4:4:4 onto an external device via HDMI. The price tag is lot better of Sony as well. But unfortunately I didn’t have a chance (yet) using any of these cameras, so all I see is the specs available on the internet. I’m sure your feed back and opinion of these cameras will be very valuable and appreciated when the time comes to make the right choice.
  18. "Hook knife or cutaway?" Both! I actually carry two good (metal housing) hook knives besides the cutaway system.
  19. Thank you! The widest shot was taken at 70mm focal lenght. One time I used the full zoom on my 24-105L lens. Framing wasn't easy...

  21. I'm not planning to pick one up... I'm waiting for the 5D Mk2 replacement. Where it's going??? Based on the 1DX probably the same sensor and similar processing but slower frame rate. Also enhanced video features, and of course smaller/lighter and lot cheaper (the usual $3,000 range). It's all my speculation though... Will see hopefully soon
  22. Your external HD has to be formated to file system FAT32 in order to be compantible with both PC and Mac. I went through this issue earlier this year. Mac won't recognize NTFS fromatted HDs. When you go to "My Computer" right click on the connected external drive and select "properties". That will tell you what fileing sysytem is your HD formatted for. If showes NTFS, you have to re-format it for FAT32. Make sure you back up all your data before you doing it so, because re-formating means ereasing all files!!! For re-formatting right click on the external HD on "My Computer" then select "Format" then you have to select FAT.
  23. At last Canon announced a new pro level camera the 1D X. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_1d_x#Overview While it’s big, heavy, and I assume will be pricey this camera gives some ideas (I guess) about the 5D MK2 replacement. -Laszlo-
