That video is actually very funny. Thanks for sharing it!

    ringsight outdated?

I don't think a ring sight (camera sight) is a fashion item of freefall photography. I think (actually I know) a sight is an important piece of the camera helmet/set up in order to have proper framing and composition.

    editing comparisons

Thank you Spot! I liked the first one the best, it's the most "sophisticated" in my eyes. And I liked the second guy's dog fight idea...

    Back to older camcorders???

Back to using older cameras again... :) Does the good old HC3 output uncompressed 4:2:2? Even if it's interlaced... How about CX100? The HC3 still seems to me better from the sensor aspect right? It would be great to use these older cameras in some low budget aerial projects with higher quality unitizing the BMD or the Ninja...

    Canon C300PL

Spot, I read about this new Canon C300PL right after its announcement. Based on the specs it seems to me it’s pretty similar to Sony’s FS100U http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/761578-REG/Sony_NEX_FS100U_NEX_FS100E_Super_35mm_Sensor.html The major difference is the Canon can record 50Mbps 4:2:2 onto a memory card vs. Sony’s 28Mbps. But apparently Sony is capable to record 4:4:4 onto an external device via HDMI. The price tag is lot better of Sony as well. But unfortunately I didn’t have a chance (yet) using any of these cameras, so all I see is the specs available on the internet. I’m sure your feed back and opinion of these cameras will be very valuable and appreciated when the time comes to make the right choice.

    Ham Radio ATV (video) gear

I jump every week with a 900MHz 0.7W video transmitter providing air to ground (live video). You can buy even more powerful wireless video systems (transmitter and receiver) on ebay for $150. ...now you just need to become an experinced jumper. 73's HA3TW

    kodak v 705 laszlo mod

I made about 1,200 jums with mine, but honestly I never used the burst mode. Certain light conditions I use exposure compensation one step (0.3) up or down and I normally use the flash. End of the day I shoot at ISO 200 this way the camera maintains descent shutter speed.

    Broadcast delivery formats/media

Whatever the broadcasters/TV stations paying for... Seriously, my experince is they really not set up for AVCHD (yet). I would convert the video into HDV (MPEG2) and put it onto a disc as a data file.

    Sony Vegas Quality

As you descibed the problem it seems to me you have saved (rendered) your project into a well compressed file format. The "ghostly" stuff is the sign of the very high compression (maybe some kind of internet file format). The skipping frames tellig me there are problems with the frame rate as well. The TRV18 captures NTSC 30i field order "A" video. Make sure you render your project with the same settings. Also make sure you chose MPEG-2 (for DVD) with at least 4000MBS constant data rate (6 or 8000 would be better though). I'm not using Vegas so I don't know the "exact clicks" in that software, but I'm sure if you find those setting I mentioned the froblem will be fixed. Ultimately as we know already DSE is the guru of Vegas (and other video stuff too) -Laszlo-

    Tonfly/CX7 side mounting opinions

Tonfly, Rawa, and etc. helmets are basically free fly helmets with the option to mount a camera onto them. They are not real camera helmets for real camera work. The idea of these helmets coming from the time when Sony and came out with the PC series video cameras (and other manufactures too with similar design). The size and dimention of those cameras allowed to mount them on the side of the helmet. But those cameras are no more! As you see you bumped into a limitation already. I recommend to sell your helmet and get a full face one with big top platform instead (there are a few very good designs out there) which allows you to mount various camera equipment with less limitation. The CX7 "shake problem" is coming from its optical image stabilization. We have one person using it here the Ranch, he's ok with it. He has it mounted on the top without a box. Generally these cameras are ok for belly flying. When you start free flying with it (defenitelly sit flying) you gonna have more and more "jittery" issues. The CX12 perfoms better but still have the same problem because of the optical image stabilization. The real solution is the CX100 which has electronic stabiliztion (no floating lens element). For further info please read the camera forum regarding to the CX7/CX12/CX100.

Be carefull where you send your photos

We all went through this... strange cropping, unreal colors in the printing, and so on... Not only Strong's calendar, but all publications. My story with this practicular calendar is I allowed them to use my image since they said it will be handed out for free. But they wanted me to sign a full release of the image and grant all rights to Strong Enterprices. Of course I denided that. My image wasn't "destroyed" in this calendar though

    TDK Blu-ray blanks...

Spot, Thank you for the info about BluRay. Here's the info about my software I couldn't remember when we talked. It is called Power Producer by Cyber Link. It's a pretty lame application, it came with my LG BluRay burner. I wrote my tandem video onto Ridata BD-R and LG BD-RE (came with the burner) The video played at Best Buy on one of the Samsung player, on Sony Viao computer, and the BD-RE disc on the LG player as well. Everything else gave me "disc error" or "can't play" message. Now I'll try to use a different program to create a BluRay disc, and also I'll update the burner's firmware. Will see. ...by the way, those Ridata discs are $10 at Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817132051 Thanks again for the help! -Laszlo-

    Going rate for magazine photos

Andy, I normally use http://www.gettyimages.com/Editorial/Editorial.aspx for pricing. when this page comes up type in to the search bar "skydiving" (if it's a skydiving image...). After that you can get pricing any of them based on lot of criterias (purpose of use, size of the print, amount of the prints, and etc...) I would select an image what is closest to yours... -Laszlo- PS. you might have to open an accoun there though, which isn't to hard.

    BASE "photography"

Yuri, It could only work if the person was standing right next to the bridges's pillar. Otherwise the calculation won't be accurate beacause the distance between the known value (the person) and the angle of view of the lens allows infinite variations. Counting the pixels is a good idea. But the only accurate calculation would be if we know the actual angle of the view and the distance between the camera and the known person. Based on that we can calculate the hight of the object in the back using triangulation (Tg, Ctg, Sin, Cos....) Otherwise we're going to be a victim of optical illusion. -Laszlo-

Settings for a Canon Rebel XT

All of the settings. There's no such a thing or setting wich always will work. Light is different all the time, distance is different all the time, flash or no flash and etc... It all dipends by what do you want to see in your photographs. This "what setting" subject is way to more extended than the capabilty of this thread. I recommend to search some photo sites and get some photo books where you can learn the basics of photography. Also I'm pretty sure there's an experienced photgrapher around your DZ who can help you at the begining. Also you can practice and tweek around on the ground without jumping and find out about your camera. Even the XT's manual has lots of useful information. Good luck! -Laszlo-
  21. I use the Epson R-1800. This one can print up to 13x19 borderless, or 13"wide roll paper. It's also very fast. It has a "smaller brother" the R-800 which uses the exact same kind of ink (8 different colors) and printing head except the max paper size is 8.5"x11". Canon and HP printers are very good too, but the Epson a bit better. -Laszlo-

    Videos for advertizing

The DZ's where I work the waiver has a Model Release section too. So everybody who makes a jump (including fun jumpers) basically agreeing that their faces can be used anywhere by the DZ or the photographer wheter it's a video or a photo taken at DZ. But the video or photo taken home by tandems or anyone shouldn't be used else where, deffinetly not for advertisment without the permission of the photographer! -Laszlo-

    How close is this..?

Rule #1 is never trust in anyone. You should always keep everybody in your view. (at least if you film 3-way) The other thing is normally the camera guy pulls in place right at the break off, so you should have had at least some vertical separation (unless if you have to cutaway…). Shooting the jumpers “turn and track” is lot easier if you plan it with them, and the separation happens a bit higher than normal allowing you to get away from them safely. With lower experienced jumpers (like the video shows) the planning is lot harder, they have a good tendency to get lower or forget about the plan. You always have to be prepared for that to and abort your plan to take a cool shot and start to save your own butt. It’s always better to be disappointed and not having “THE SHOT” than get hurt. -Laszlo- ps. I wish you had that canopy played in slow motion. Yes I agree that was close.
