  1. I have the same exact problem but the opening has been quick enough that I realize my bearings and go for the right-riser instantly.

I've had no line twists on it so far, and have managed to get a few on-heading openings. Still experimenting with different pack methods to keep the 180 degree spin from happening during the inflation sequence. I don't do CRW, and I don't open close to other people, much less at the same alti. so I'm not going to worry about it for now.

It was snappy, but the landing was fine. This isn't a worn out old F-111 tandem main, this is a pretty new Sigma, with the elliptical main, apparently it flies really well, and apparently so. B|

Elliptical main for tandems? Wow. I bet you could have a bitchin' time with a non-student in the harness. B|

  3. Hope you get well soon, Gale! At least look on the bright side... it's an infection... not a stone! That would really hurt! (imagine peeing out a metal sticker burr)

    :)

Just because something is legal doesn't make it safe.

Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it's going to cause a fatality.

I didn't imply that if the playing field is green that there isn't going to be a brown spot in the lawn. What I said was that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to identify an environment where safety is more precocious than the norm.

Please don't take this as a knock, but do you really think you're qualified to judge the safety of a dropzone based on your A license?

Oh this is rich. Skydiving fatalities in the past several years have been lopsided towards the experienced end of the spectrum (Parachutist, 2002) whereas student fatalities have remained fairly constant.

I don't think it's that difficult for students to realize the difference between reality and regulation when they read the SIM and the FARs and compare what's listed to how things really operate at their DZ. Skydivers also have to realize that most DZs are tandem factories; they have to pay the bills. It's just a matter of personal judgement, not skill, to tell which DZs are more interested in your wallet vs. your life.

Some of these interests surface themselves very glaringly... like overloading the jumpship, or DZs who jump junk, lots of NTSB reports, etc.

I really don't believe a D license holder has any better skill than a A license holder in assessing the "safety" of a DZ unless the D-holder holds some has a job that involves general aviation, as opposed to say... arranging flowers.

We are all human, and as such... subject to malfunction!

  6. It's mostly protecting skydiving itself. Because these "kids" are not of the age of majority, practically anything they sign or their parents/relatives is worthless. Such is the case with child actors who sign into contracts with tv/film studios, etc.

So, in a nutshell, when these kiddos take to the sky they are practically waiverless. It's only a matter of time until this principle is tested. Stay tuned.

  7. Hmm... *kix database server*

    UPDATE PROFILES
    SET LOGON = 0
    WHERE (I_LEFT_MY_BEER = 1 AND
    (CURRENT_CRANIAL_STATE LIKE '%I_AM_SO_WASTED%')) OR
    (I_LOCKED_MY_DB_KEYS_IN_MY_CAR_AGAIN = 1)

    Sorry, geek joke. ;)

  8. I have an "emergency" stash, which is basically a 10 gallon glass jar (it's immense) full of coin. If I ever get low enough that I can't jump, I scoop out a coffe can worth of coins and viola... jump weekend. ;)

  10. It would be nice if USPA did post its balance sheet in Parachutist at the end-of-year close. Seeing that we're all members and this is a non-profit...

  12. Good point. I have those and worry about a line dump or nasty accidental opening disloging one or both breaks and making a bad situation worse. I think I'll chop my main next time and rubbers on em.

Don't know what it looks like in Austin but in New Braunfels it finally let up again and the sky is clearing. I doubt San Marcos is running though. Maybe I'll pick up the phone...........

  15. This was happening to me ALL the time on student gear and on rental, usually when jumping a Talon2 (what is it with these tiny tabs that pop out all the time)? It happened on old and brand new gear.

I stopped worrying about it because I only did belly and the packtray was always supertight but I can see how it "might" cause a horseshoe. I never did notice the risers coming out when I turned my back, though... just the tuck tab flappin' away.

Time to max out a credit card and get a rig!

  16. I might be able to help you out. I'm flying to Champaign Aug 1 and getting the hotel all taken care of, then going to Chicago later that night to shack up with an old friend ;)

Could get ya on the way back on Aug 2 if it's in the morning.

Not only that, but the incident report about Chris was also inaccurate. According to his friends that were with him every minute of the preceding day, he never claimed he wanted to do a 360 degree turn. Chris also had more like 600+ jumps. He had 200+ on that canopy and had gotten all his jumps in the last two years, therefore being very current. The report makes it sound as if an inexperienced jumper was out of his league. This was not the case.

I concur. I've spent the last three years at Skydive San Marcos (where Chris jumped most of the time) and he was very current and experienced.

  • I'm jumping a '97 J1. It's been modified for a board and also has a laminate plate and rig-mounted altimeter on the right-side harness strap.

Is the tab really short when it's placed under the flaps? Wonder what could be catching air and causing the cover to come off. Any possibility that something is "pushing" the tab out... like a kink in fabric under the tab? Is it smooth down there? No air pockets?

I did see a new Odyssey last weekend that had a length problem on the reserve cover... it would close very loosely because it was too short and would flap in freefall. The jumper who owns it will probably return it to SunPath to get it fixed or have a rigger check it out.
