Bryan Burke - SDAZ 270 Policy notes
OSOK replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
How about setting "gates" on all 4 sides of a landing area. The HP landings would HAVE to use one of the gates, and they can plan it accordingly as to not use the same one if they're on the same group. I'll draw a quick pic... Ok, take a look at the pic and I'll explain a bit more. The swooper does his 180/270/360/etc OUTSIDE of the actua landing area. He'll be spiriling down where there is no traffic at all. He would time it so when he enters the landing area he's pretty much at ground level, passing by the gate. In this case if anyone would be on top of anyone would be the standard pattern flyer while on their base leg over the swooper while on his final. The directions would all depend on winds, of course, but it would at least make it a little more 'organized' than the way it is now. Feel free to post your thoughts... I don't know much about swooping, if anything at all. -

I wonder if they ones that died because of swoopers share the same idea... Why put together "idiot" and "standard pattern flyers" together? Flying a standard pattern makes you an idiot or something? Yeap, agree with you there... so safe how many died because of their swooping? ------------------------------------------- All that aside, I'm not against swooping of any kind, but I am against people that prove me right when I say that common sense ain't that common. -
Just exit one after the other, both commecing the track in a certain direction right away. Have a predetermined pull alt for both, and whoever is furthes AND highest at pull time wins! Done it before, and it's as simple as it gets.

It has nothing to do with guns. Really bad exmaple! Swooping is not a crime, bad ass flying is. Exactly. Owning guns isn't a crime either, but using them a certain way is. See the correlation? -
Don't DZs have to have a landing area X by X for students to land on, as per USPA? Why doesn't USPA do the same but add swooping to the mix? If the landing area isnt X by X then no swooping is allowed, period.

My 2 cents: Banning swooping in 'any' way is the same as banning guns. We don't need to ban guns, just teach people how to use them so accidents don't continue to happen. -
Dude... you need some serious... something. sigh

Ok, let me try to explain what I mean, in my terms. RW track = tracking dive with buddies where you work on taking docks, flying your slot, etc. pull-time track = track where you turn and track away from the formation, tracking for a few seconds before pulltime. hardcore track = usually solo, the whole dive is a track, and you achieve lift/speed much greater than in any of the two above. Sorry if my terms are a bit unorthodox. So, back to my original question, for the hardcore trackers: how do you do it?

Sorry to be off-topic... but I've thought about this, and who is going to sue? If both die, usually the person's family won't be in the 'loop' well enough to know why it happened. If both just get hurt and live, who will sue, risking 'popularity' with their peers and the community? I haven't been in the sport that long, so when I talked about the nasty numbers recently, 3 double fatalities in a span of 9 days, I was told that the sport has its downs and ups. If someone was to actually sue because of an accident that could've been avoided, I personally wouldn't think of that person as some as*hole that is trying to kill the sport. On the other hand, I'd probably thank that person for probably saving numerous lives in the future. Yes, it'd suck for it to get that point... but you know what, I rather take out part of the fun of the sport than to die because of it.

Reading some of the posts here (and trying to skip the bs) I came up with 2 ideas: 1) Setting a limit on when it's ok or not ok to swoop that depends on the number of people in the air at the same time. I know many incidents (including a recent one) occured when there were only 2 canopies in the sky, but all the same, the more people airborne, the bigger the chances. 2) Setting a 'recurrency' on flying a straight pattern. I assume some people do s-turns (me being one) is because they have a hard time getting to where they want to without it. If you set some kind of "goal" ... like before getting your A license you need a to do a barrel roll ... so that every so often you have to perform a straight landing pattern, it might keep people current and make them able to do it when needed. It kinda sounds silly... it's just a very vague idea being thrown out there.

Thanks for the replies, all. By "hardcore tracking" and "not RW tracks" I meant full solo tracking dives. In a big-way track (that's what I meant by RW tracking) you don't really get to max out your track, since you're usually following a lead and have to adjust to not overshoot, etc. I also didn't mean "hardcore tracking" as the tracks to gain distance before pulltime, since on those you really don't have enough time to get going on a good track, the kind of track that starts creating lift as your speed increases. All that aside, I will try the palms up method on a day that I can get a few solo tracks in and compare how it 'feels' different one type after the other. I can't wait to get my GPS so I can have better numbers than just avg vertical speeds from my Neptune. Thanks all! Keep it coming!

Well, I know this topic has been talked about many many times, but I'd like some opinions from the hardcore trackers out there. Do you track with both legs kinda of together or separate, more than shoulder-width apart? I'm interested in hearing from people what works for them. Again, I'm talking hardcore tracking... not RW tracking, etc. Thanks!

http://www.flylikebrick.com/movie1.php That the same?

Or someone being directly supervised by a rigger.

Since we're on the topic... you know what's really annoying? People with less jumps than me, not wearing helmets. I know it's not needed, but I wish I had the jump numbers to tell that arrogant f*ck to put it on and not look like a "wanna be S&TA" in front of everyone that either don't care or something .... /vent off

I was taught that unless the grommet is positioned to the right on the flap (like Vectors), then the order doesn't "really" matter... however, it's good to be consistent, so anything that doesn't "say" to close right-left then gets closed left-right.

Amazon now has a nice 2-day free shipping sale going on the electronics, and both Foretrex apply. Can you please give your inpunt on which one you'd recommend, having tried both? The free-shipping ends in about 20 hours... so... Thanks!

this the one you have? http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Foretrex-201-Wrist-Mounted-Waterproof/dp/B0001K2JD0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0905773-9378221?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1174267537&sr=8-1 Any comments on it from anyone who owns one?

Interesting. Do you happen to have a pic of it while on the ground, maybe a close up?
-
This post might be kind of pointless, but I just had to say "wow" when I read the incidents page a few minutes ago after getting home from work. 2 double fatalities plus a plane crash in 3 days? Geez... "Ides of March" anyone?
-
Didn't see any feet-first tracking there. Did I miss it?
-
You mean the whole track like that? or switching back and forth? Any other drills that will come in handy?
-
I would, but 1) I'm not gay and 2) such marriages haven't been legalized in the state of Florida. However, if you have a sister, I'll happily marry her and then you can tag along.

There's always been a big question... what's a better track? One that gets a lot of distance but loses alt quick, or one that doesn't get that much distance but is flatter? And how this relates to wingsuits?
