  1. I stayed out of this thread as long as I could... I swear. Now a long boring post. Like ZigZag I am one of those so called aviation professionals. A couple degrees, Commercial Pilot, Aircraft Dispatcher, Air Traffic Controller and I even did a little over half a year in Safety at a major airline at one point. blah blah blah... I work for the devil now..... I also happen to jump at SDLI... when not doing the other jumping. To cut to the chase, Zig is right on the money. If there is an accident, they (NTSB) are going to reference the fact that there is 10,000' of runway, and we used X,XXX feet.... NTSB always puts safety over $$$.... By no means are intersection departures unsafe. In fact, at any intersection departure at Calverton there is more than adequate runway for a Caravan to safely takeoff and clear obstacles..... however; Going back to the taxi-ing issue: Certain planes, aren't designed for long distance taxiing.... I remember a certain incident where a large aircraft aborted a takeoff due to an insignificant fact and on the taxi back the brakes caught fire... whoops! Suppose to wait and let them cool after a Rejected takeoff..... Too much taxiing + aborted takeoff = bad..... The other thing, is the math aspect, with people figuring out distances, and etcetera (sorry Jordan). It's all assumptions. Bad ones off internet data. To make accurate ones, we need a POH (pilot operating handbook) some real world figures and an experienced caravan pilot. Look at just some of the variables: - The weight the aircraft took off at. - Temperature or density altitude - Take off type Rolling takeoff? Stop apply max power, then let off the brakes? -Center of gravity (it does affect climb rate and stability) - CLimb speed? Vx (best angle) or Vy (best rate) and when? - Headwind, crosswind, tailwind? These are just a few variables.... Then factor in there is an engine failure in the aircraft.... -Altitude and speed it occured at? -Is it sudden? (turbines don't generally just lose a cylender and start self destructing) -How quick was it recognized? Pitch changed instantly? - Time to feather prop? - What is the best glide speed in a 208B? - Power off, how much altitude does it take to make a 90 degree turn, a 180 degree turn? Calverton has plenty of outs if the aircraft were to lose power from an intersection takeoff. SkyDive Long island also has good pilots. Pilots I would easily trust with my life if something bad happend. However, the fact remains that the airport / town can do what it likes. Beleive it or not, more than likely, banning intersection takeoffs would increase safety. It's an undeniable fact. Take off from one end straight ahead, and no matter what altitude you were at, you could easily land straight ahead or have more than enough altitude by the airport boundry to do a 180 and land opposite direction to the takeoff on the runway. However, the FAA is about cost benefit. We could even probably make airlines a 99.999999% safe. Too bad it would cost a million bucks a ticket. And that's what this is about. Cost benefit analysis. The cost of the extra wear and tear on the aircraft, the extra taxiing of the plane, the increased fuel burn, is not worth the increase in safety we would recieve in terms of landing on the airport or landing in a sod farm or field in case of engine failure. This is about one resident pushing his agenda. I hope that SDLI wins, and intersection takeoffs are allowed, because of the above fact. _justin By the way, Back when I used to fly I did one time use a 3200' runway instead of a 10,000' one in a piston single and after breaking ground I lost partial power and almost put it in the trees. Micky Mouse yells mayday I suppose. Even after that incident, I still took the 3200' runway rather than the increased taxi distance. Risk / Reward.
  2. I am so glad people are finaly starting to take interest in the theory. A great book is: Target Risk 2: A New Psychology of Safety and Health It's by Gerald Wilde, who postulates the whole risk homeostasis theory. cool and interesting to me and I hatemost psychology texts.... A lot of the data is auto related stuff, but still pretty interesting if you like risk theory and such..... Coincidentaly, it arrived right before a base jumping trip I took to Idaho. go figure. _justin

    4000ft Glass B

I Doubt it. One rig from an aircraft, not even a belly mount reserve? Highly unlikely considering the this caveat alone in the petition..... Which is of course: That was not a base rig they jumped from the helicopter. Savvey? That agency is inflexible.... believe me I know..... _j
  4. With that I give you this pic. Maggot hiding near an A while waiting for the workers to leave. Notice the creative use of his camo stash bag.....
  5. If you've heard / seen one, a high speed fatal / near fatal water impact makes a sound that haunts you in nightmares.
  6. Come on now.... risking a catastrophe? Made me look it up..... What I found was.... § 3302. Causing or risking catasrophe. (a) Causing catastrophe.--A person who causes a catastrophe by explosion, fire, flood, avalanche, collapse of building, release of poison gas, radioactive material or other harmful or destructive force or substance, or by any other means of causing potentially widespread injury or damage, including selling, dealing in or otherwise providing licenses or permits to transport hazardous materials in violation of 75 Pa.C.S. Ch. 83 (relating to hazardous materials transportation), commits a felony of the first degree if he does so intentionally or knowingly, or a felony of the second degree if he does so recklessly. (b) Risking catastrophe.--A person is guilty of a felony of the third degree if he recklessly creates a risk of catastrophe in the employment of fire, explosives or other dangerous means listing in subsection (a) of this section. Now regardless of how people feel about the video and the jump, doesn't it seem like a witch hunt now-a-days with the police, politicians and law enforcement officials? Sheesh.....
  7. Yes. I thought the ground crew did a shitty job with the video camera too. They could take a lesson from Felix on how to do it the 'proper' way......
  8. Not for the state of NY.... City of NY... New York is more than just the city. It is an important distinction.....
  9. Magot sent me the following text "Tell the idiots on dz to mind there own business its are play ground" Sadly he can't post. Notice I didn't edit for spelling / grammer either..... He's still on blinc though.... Anyway, I don't know if I missed it or not, but this law, proposed law is only right now for NYC. http://www.senatorgolden.com/press_archive_story.asp?id=15611 Notice that this was from his press archive, Jan 18th. The great paper the Brooklyn graphic didn't run this story till Feb 8th..... Not exactly earth breaking news to say the least. As for the issue, will other cities, municipalities follow? Perhaps, perhaps not. Skin said it best a few pages ago. So right now, who does this proposed lawaffect those that jump regularly in NYC. I am not one of them, though I made a jump there with Magot last week. The fun jump that it was. In truth, it doesn't affect him that much, cause he doesn't care, he'll just jump anyway. So here we all are searching for damage control, and blaming ourselves and each other. Shit happens. Time to stand back and watch the fall out. We'll see who's still around when it's all over. Me, I can't afford a felony with my job, so I'll just go back to Twin and Moab... I accept the risk of death, but losing my job... well that would just suck. Still have those sites for now right? _justin
  10. I have the velocity armor. Use it for BASE when the situation calls for it. Also use it skiing and downhill mtn biking a bit. Arm movement isn't bad. I have one rig which was measured without it, and it is a little tighter, but not that bad. Arm movement is a little less than without, but my armor fits well, so I don't notice it much. Plus the spine protector is detachable (which I like) so I am more likely to wear it more situations in which I decide against the whole she-bang. For the knees, I wear a combo knee shin guard by race face made for downhill mtn biking. It's not too bad in terms of articulation, but difficult to fit under pants... unless you have motorcross pants. All plastic is sewn down to the pad so the snag potential I feel is less. THough I prefer everything covered. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m233/jdailey624/MOAB/DSC04665.jpg A shot of me getting ready to exit in MOAB (photo thanks to Jimmy) I am wearing the armor underneath a fleece with my rig that wasn't measured for it, the knee/shin outside of my pants and HanWags. Dress for the crash I guess. Thankfully haven't needed it yet. The vest also fits under my Impact track suit ok. Hope this helps- _justin

    Thank you TomDancs

If you saw Ryan, you'd know he has to pay to play.... Though I guess we all pay in some sense. By the way Ryan, how's the healing process going?

    LORAN-C

Loran-C Frequently Asked Questions Is Loran-C a risk to health? The McManus Report investigated public health regarding radiation from a transmitting mast such as the proposed Loop XXXX Loran-C. The power output is no greater than that of a typical RTE or BBC station. Aside from precautions to be taken by maintenance personnel servicing the mast and limiting public access, there have been no identifiable risks for public health. All LORAN-C antennas radiate an omnidirectional pattern... Beats the hell out of me, but then again, I hate towers and they hate me.
  13. Ryan, cut the guy some slack, he's selling a facon 175 in the classifieds. Perfect size to be rolled over off a B into a parking lot... By the way, great Xray pics. I didn't now you had a nipple ring..... I'm scared to see what other hardware you have, thank god you didn't break your pelvis!

Along with your self-medication I guess so. Remember to be in a lot of pain so they put you on the good shit. Don't try and man up and pretend it doesn't hurt. Remember always get crazy X-ray pictures.

A couple of months? When that new rig comes in you will cut the cast off.... wait isn't it your left arm? You should be ok.
  16. I know, but it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling when I climb... and that's all I really want out of it.
  17. There was a kite surfer out in Hawaii years back that got lofted about 200' by a thermal. landed with some bruises. It's on the web somewhere. I've got an 18 meter kite at the ready if someone else wants to try it... I'll just shoot the video for the first one. _justin
  18. There's a rig in that picture?!?
  19. I don't usually engage in such banter- but, let me throw my hat in the ring. To the original, which has been hashed out, legal yes. I could grab a friend who's a pilot, bomb out of the plane over an uninhabited area low(i.e. my own property) and open up at 7' and god know's it be legal as long as I had complied with FAA regs.... concerning ATC, notams, certified, blah blah blah... oh wait, what's this in my pocket an FAA work id, commercial pilot license, Aircraft Dispatcher license, etc? Wait, I still get to keep all of these even if someone went to Johnny law, cause all I did was ignore some USPA regs? hmm... the practiced approach is one thing, legal approach is another... but is it really the point? People sometimes here it seems spend way too much time concerning themselves with other people then with themselves. I could understand Lisamariewillbe's post if calvin showed up at the dropzone with a friend and they went tracking up the flightline, endangering others and drinking beer at the same time. Seems to me she is just trying to stir things up. But what do I know. I just sit hear and see people with 10k posts and XXX jumps and say hmmm..... Maybe they should read more, think more, jump more, and post less.... But then again, what do I know? ps Calvin, I'll jump with you anytime. we can take turns flying the jump plane.
  20. Yup. A friend of mine is headed out to Moab and is looking to grab my rig as a second... but I have a new one coming anyway.... However. my rig is currently packed..... for how long who knows, I told him I"d like him to repack it before he jumps it. I think it's the whole *if shit happend thing... you'd never want to wonder, was it my pack job or his body position that caused the 180..... Now between now and then, I plan to jump, and this pack job is fine, but it's for me. not him. _justin
  21. Someone earlier today broguht it back... then deleted their post..... hmmm.... Perhaps internet boredom.... time to go flick something eh?
  22. Quote.... we are selfish in our pursuit of life satisfaction, and they are selfish in their desire for our longevity. Quote Thanks Ryan. Pretty much hits the nail on the head on my family's approach. Borhters and Sisters are OK... understand, the old have fun, don't die. But the rents, man oh man.....
  23. I am bringing this thread back up because I had another falling out with the family (mom) tonight. Unfortunately, I have been present at the last 2 fatalities, and my Mom is well aware of it. I am completely independent of my family, as I have a good job and am geographically seperated from them. I like Ray's advice though as it rings true. Being an asshole helps as well I've found. I have been honest about BASE with her, the risks, etc, but I leave for Moab tuesday and she is having a hard time.... especially with the latest 2 fatalities. My question is, those of you that have met such familyresistance with honesty, does it ever get easier? Or should I just say fuck it, and give up and just stop telling her about BASE jumping? I thought honesty was the best policy, but it is proving increasingly difficult to the point I should just tell her after my trips. _justin
  24. Quote Did you really fall for justin's "land on me hard" line? Didn't you think it was funny how he wanted to go for his naked base#, but kept suggesting that A way out in the woods?Quote After that trip to the A in the woods I was on antibiotics for 3 weeks.... thanks a lot!
  25. Hey, Fuck you Ryan! By the way, what are you selling that Raven for? I hear it opens higher then a vented Fox..... _justin
