  1. Here we go again. It's like the last thread from the WFFC last year.... With the guy and the BASE rig and the balloon... I hear he got the whole thing cancelled for this year.... Whuffos would think it's stupid to jump with 2 parachutes, why not 3? Shoot, they even make an airplane with a parachute, maybe it's safer.... we should have that on airliners right? You jump down this guys throat, and he's only here to ask a question. Do you really think that's the right post and response.... sheesh.... He's not from the US, where we have hashed this issue out to the death, right? _justin oh and by the way, I concede to your skydiving experiece, and respect you for it, but not for responses like this.... Is being condescending on a message board really helping the sport either? Ask yourself if this approach works with a Airport Manager, an inspector, or even an air traffic controller.... I can tell you right now, it doesn't work for the latter.
  2. Not excatly correct according to the NTSB report. http://www.ntsb.gov/publictn/2002/AAR0201.pdf Page 34 No technical objection, and then an in service test... It was later that they found the grease not suitable.... Then check page 178 #21.... You do read the whole NTSB reports right? Or am I missing something? _justin
  3. http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/GenPDF.asp?id=DCA00MA023&rpt=fa I was working at US Airways at the time of this in their safety department.... They grounded all their MD80's.... Safety First.... _justin
  4. I am lazy too, but I love looking up shit like this- http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFAR.nsf/0/AD2EBDA6370BB404852566CF0061287A?OpenDocument Reasonable precuations... rea·son·a·ble 1. agreeable to reason or sound judgment 2. not exceeding the limit prescribed by reason 3. moderate, 4. endowed with reason. 5. capable of rational behavior, decision, etc. pre·cau·tion 1. An action taken in advance to protect against possible danger, failure, or injury 2. Caution practiced in advance; forethought or circumspection I searched the sim and there is no mention of "sky ball"... anyone find that? Remember though, it's all in fun, but let the pilot know as you'd burn him bad if things went wrong....
  5. HAHAHA!! I know that guy. Some people you just can't reason with. It's funny watching this thread, I knew what the outcome would be. It's a hierarchy in skydiving message board posting... If I have 30 years in the sport, anyone with less time and experience's opinion doesn't count... No matter what the discussion! Look at the great responses by Bilvon in this thread, spot on as far as I am concerned, but since Our hero the thread starter has more time in the sport, Bill is wrong. It's great. No wait it's sad. Maybe it's certain old timer's bad attitudes toward the younger generations that are driving new people away. Thank god, I managed to fall into generation X! _justin
  6. There are no BASE jumps in the NYC left... Maggot burned all the sites with his poo.
  7. edit... forget it you seem intent on laying blame. Explaining who owns what and where isn't worth the time. Good luck at your commuter.
  8. Doubt it. Are air traffic controllers required to issue traffic advisories to jump aircraft? FAAO 7110.65, Air Traffic Control, paragraph 9-8-4, requires that controllers issue traffic advisories to the jump aircraft before the jump. Controllers must issue advisories to all known aircraft that will transit the airspace when the jump operations will be conducted. Are air traffic controllers required to separate jump aircraft that operate within a Class E airspace area? No. Traffic advisories shall be provided, but ATC is not required to separate visual flight rules aircraft within Class E airspace. However, in accordance with FAAO 7110.65, Air Traffic Control, paragraph 9-8-4, ATC may assist pilots of non-participating aircraft that request help in avoiding the jump airspace. In addition, if there is other traffic in the jump area, ATC does not authorize or deny jump operations due to traffic. The jump pilot shall be issued traffic advisories. The jump pilot and jumpers will make a decision on whether or not to allow the jumpers to leave the aircraft. 14 CFR, section 105.5, clearly places the burden on the jump pilot and parachutist by stating that no person may conduct a parachute operation and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow a parachute operation to be conducted from an aircraft, if that operation creates a hazard to air traffic or to persons or property on the ground. Actually, looks like crosskeys is outside the class B of PHL.... http://skyvector.com/ I am leaving work to go skydiving. not my problem! _justin

    Hey Tom

HAHAHA! That's how I got 2 weeks off. Remember, better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
  10. Agreed. However, I find it funny, Jimmy H, once stated: [url]http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1798789#1798789 I know this post was made a long long long time ago, when you were teaching a wee 16 yr old lass named Clair to BASE jump.... So what changed Jimmy? HIDGAF? I know I'd like to know. _justin
  11. ...the list... When I used to fly, suprisingly I was a pilot at one time, I used to read a lot of NTSB accident reports... I figured if I could learn from those mistakes, maybe, just maybe, I wouldn't make the same ones myself... Then a few friends started showing up in the reports..... dieing in really stupid preventable airplane crashes... It upsets me that they are known/remembered as NTSB XXX report, and not the person they were making perhaps just a one time error in judgement. However, If one person reads the report of where they went so wrong and learns from it, it is not all for naught.... But I wish they could have just a glimpse of the person that made that mistake... To me, the BASE jumping fatality list does both. It personifies the accident, and provides a lesson... I think it is valuable and I thank Nick for doing a difficult job. Beth, I am so sorry about Joe. I think about it often... _justin
  12. Sorry. I can't believe that was a personal attack, Let's face facts, this guy since he registered at DZ.com consitantly posts some stupid shit in the Base Zone. -> like, oh say a thread looking for BASE 3919 and 1784.... -> Oh and totaly, worshiping any jumper he's seen on You-tube cause he doesn't know dick about the history of BASE jumping? How about stupid posts like this; http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2762016#2762016 Which is in this thread no less! Enlighten us with more of your wisdom WI-Fly... like the following. Nic, on the money.... and the simile was good, polite, but good. Maybe it is cause I have made my last few jumps with Magot, but I give up. WI-Fly you are a fucking idiot. Shut the Fuck up. Now, that's a personal attack. _justin

    New Forum

wow. Very apt. cool. I like it. _justin
  14. Ok.. perhaps I am channeling another poster here, but why? You aren't even through AFF yet? http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2744932;#2744932 So why do you want to meet some local jumpers? I understand the whole 'I want to get into BASE and jump right away thing'... but lately, some of these posts are a bit much. How about doing some reading? Some research? Some, perhaps, skydiving? You seem to want to shortcut the entire process? Well let me help you out. BASE rig http://cgi.ebay.com/BASE-RIG-220-Cruiselite-Skydive-skydiving-Parachute_W0QQitemZ220100773678QQihZ012QQcategoryZ106980QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem How to pack http://www.crmojo.com/adobepdf/ra_manual_online.pdf Then you can end up here. http://hometown.aol.com/base194/myhomepage/base_fatality_list #53 tried to shortcut the process too. There. Happy? Fuck.
  15. And even then your 1st exit was...... headlow perhaps? But the dead air skills allowed you to recover.... I believe Balloon and helicopter jumps are good for the whole 'dead air experience', but most balloon and helicopter pilots don't like you to push off hard like a good solid base exit... They prefer you to fall off, so as not to upset the aircraft. At least with 'the standard pool' exit practice you get to push off hard... So what do you opt for? Practice a good hard launch into a pool that isn't really a jump, or a helicopter / balloon jump with some dead air practice to right yourself? I'd say the best case scenario is a mix of both, but since there are no guarantees in base, you could still mess up the exit... However, if your exit goes well, things tend to stay in that direction... If you zoo your exit well, you may need those dead air skills pretty quick.... if and only if there is enough height for that.... just my thoughts- _justin
  16. I watched the show (i.e. TIVO Fast forward through most of it) and was under the impression that it was 1m55s of level flight.... Right? Not delay? Cool stuff non-the-less.... remember how far the wirhgt brothers flew initially... _justin
  17. hahaha... I do struggle.... My spelling sucks too.... I understand.... The Cincy crew should have put out a post congratulating Andrew on obtaining some good base experiences! _j
  18. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=704024;#704024 Something about glass houses comes to mind. I guess since it was a long time ago (4 years), you outgrew this kind of online thank you thing.... Lighten up. Kids proud and sounds like the locals are quite hospitable... sounds like a good thing. _j

    Miles Daisher

If only he'd taught you to make sure your shoes were on tight for long slider off delays... haha See you at the perrine Memorial Day? _justin

    Saturday . . . .

Wish I could make it! With enough notice ahead of time, I'd fly out for dinner and of course to hear Nick's stories and history of BASE.... ....making a jump would just be icing on the cake! _justin
  21. I have one of each kind (clear / soft) that came with each of my rigs from the same manufacturer...... but I haven't jumped them both near enough to see the breakdown.........One's practically a virgin! I think I'll wait and see.... and post my findings in ayear.
  22. At the WFFC, per the 06 stuff anyway and I quote Course they also stated; Then again, I saw a lot of people breaking these rules, and no one said a thing.... hmmm..... The FAA is often called the 'tombstone agency' for this reason. They are slow to act and fix problems that are relatively well known until the body count climbs.... Maybe the USPA is trying to vie for that moniker. _justin
  23. Try again turbine baby, at least 400$. That's great..... In fact, the Saint Alphonsus Life Flight out of TF flies Eurocopter EC 135's... They burn about 460 - 520 lb/hr at cruise speed. So do your math (6.6 lbs /gallon) and figure all that out if it's really important. Helicopters are expensive. So are medical procedures. What's more important is the fact that spending some time beforehand developing the necessary canopy skills and pre-requisite knowledge about BASE jumping might give you a chance to avoid being a passenger in one during your stay in TF if you are jumping . It might not depending on your luck as well.... Sometimes things happen. There are no guarantees in BASE.... In which case; http://www.boiseonlinemall.com/storeframe.php?ID=58 See you all in TF memorial day. _justin
  24. Sure.... the FAA is always there to help out.... And while they are at it, maybe they could add a couple more lines in to the FAR's..... Shoot, being that aviation in the US is ridiculously under regulated..... I would not invite the FAA to help out with this. Seems like something best handled by the USPA...... Which section is your favorite? http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFAR.nsf/MainFrame?OpenFrameSet
