  1. Do not underestimate the traction your knee will undergo during a canopy deployment. I tore my pcl a few years back and "thought" that I was ok to jump after 2 months even though it was still a bit sore and stiff. I did a hop n pop which was incredibly painful. AHHHHHHHH! I waited another month before I jumped again. I ended up upsizing to a Storm 150 from my Katana 135 and I'm still pondering ever going back even though my knee now feels fine. Use good judgement, upsize until your knee heals. Or else!

  4. Are any of YOU actually going to bet your LIFE that the adhesive doesn't hold or your gopro breaks off in an entanglement? Even with your reserve? This is NOT an acceptable plan. Anyone deciding to jump with any type of video/camera needs some type of a cutaway system or an easy way of removing their helmet as well as a plan and continual practicing of emergency procedures. Go try and remove a gopro mount off of a helmet and see how easy that it is. The plastic mount will likely fail first if it does at all. I commonly ask jumpers with gopros/etc and no cutaway system on their helmets what they would do if they have an entanglement on their next jump. Usually there is silence and no answer. Good luck with that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsEI_6cErbM

  6. I think a transgender male has a better chance at being the first female president... Kaitlin for President...she can be the POTUS and first lady. It's amazing how some candidates can be so delusional as to "stay the course" as if they can actually win...it kinda makes me wanna vote for Rick Perry in a stupid fuckhead voter kinda way... Too late, Rick Perry just bowed out of the race. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/09/rick-perry-drops-out-presidential-race-213569

  8. Why? built in camera systems have never been very successful. Today, cameras are shifting rapidly. Ambarella is micro-sizing their imagers, and we'll see a significant drop in size and increase in some quality aspects in the next 18 months. Why buy a helmet that is outdated before it has 500 jumps on it? How many people are going to replace their GoPro's and invest at least another $400-500+ when the quality and features are not going to be worth the upgrade? I'll be staying with both my GP4/GP3+ and Hypoxic Turned On's for the foreseeable future. Any new video camera smaller than the GP form factor could easily be adapted to be mounted in that helmet. I bet that you could fit 2 new GP sessions side by side. The helmet looks great and reminds me of my old 2k Composites ff2 helmet. I would definitely get the chin cup option. This is much safer option than all of the helmets with top mounted GP's. I know quite a few skydivers who have lost their GP's on exit. Not with this helmet. $400-500 is a reasonable price. Is it worth replacing the helmets we all currently own? Probably not. It is a good option for a newer jumper looking for a first helmet and could add the GP later.
  9. I love my Tony Suit and use it primarily for videoing 4 way. I have a brand new one that just replaced one that I outgrew. It had over 1500 jumps and is still in good shape. There are some new improvements with some extra strengthening around the wing attachment. The quality is great and the material seems a bit more durable over my old suit. I like the mega booties, mesh line front, extra thigh pocket, foam padded knees, reinforced arms/legs, spandex arms and the A wing.
  10. Didn't Senator Elizabeth Warren do that when she claimed that she was Indian? http://townhall.com/columnists/anncoulter/2012/05/09/elizabeth_warren_dances_with_lies/page/full
  11. There was a videographer at Elsinore jumping a larger Sony cam (model?) with a large honking lens held only by the 1/4 bottom screw. On opening the receptacle and screw tore right out of the bottom and the camcorder went for its final flight until it hit the ground. Luckily he was out near the end of the runway where it hit no one. The only thing we recovered that still worked and was not completely destroyed was the memory card and we watched the whole thing on video. If the camcorder is heavy I would use nylon straps with fastec buckles or preferably a box which would be less of a snag hazard. Like you noticed those sony receptacles were only designed to hold a camcorder on a tripod mount and not for skydiving. The mount receptacles should be inspected regularly if they are the only attachment point on any system.
  12. Be careful if you use a chin mounted go pro setup. I've been using a custom one for years and my visor got all fogged up on exit the first time jumping on a cold day due to the chin venting being partially blocked by my mount. Luckily I was tracking and left the camera step last. Had to open the visor in freefall to see anything and watch everyone track away. I added extra foam padding on the inside liner around my mouth area to deflect breath down away from the visor. Helmet is a bonehead mamba. The mount is a standard curved gopro plate with a 1 1/2" aluminum extension bar. That being said in general it is a safer area to mount to the go pro and you can even see the rear tiny recording lights flashing. No more asking is my gopro on. Cutaway is a must on any setup.
  13. It's the landing area for anyone with less than a C-license. What it's called really doesn't matter. You should care, you said I was unsafe, you should care about people that are unsafe. I gave you the details and asked you -an experienced jumper- a question. I am inexperienced but I am not uninformed. So I ask you again, what about my riser turn are unsafe? Or are you so stuck in discrediting me you are incapable of answering that question? I love the way you cite the work of a guy who has told you that you are an incident waiting to happen. His personal beliefs about me do not affect the helpfulness/content of his incident thread. Reading that thread and in particular the vast number of distraction incidents in it does not mean squat unless it affects your decision making for the better. You show no indication of that. On the contrary it seems that it has imbued you with a delusional sense of knowledge. That is remarkable since an easily discernible dominant theme in DSE's incidents list is newbies with many of the views you have espoused here getting bitten. This is so glaringly discordant that I'm beginning to suspect that your deficit of self-perception and introspection might be clinical. You think you can throw internet posts at this problem when in fact your primary defense is to make good decisions on the ground before you skydive. Your word salad transmitting your rationalizations at others who know better won't affect anything. You are wrong on your analysis of me. I've offered to answer question so people have actual information so base there opinion of me on. No one has taken the opportunity. You may have missed the who post where I explained how I was purposefully being combative to observe people reactions. Now that I explained it I can no longer do it. So I say it again. Instead of basin you judgment of me on intentionally misrepresenting comments (by me) why don't you ask me some questions so you have actual information. Nice try troll, I stand by my prior posts. I responded to the information provided by you. I refuse to continue to engage someone who is tone deaf. You are not qualified to instruct or advise anyone about skydiving videography and you do not address this key fact because it is true. Good luck JWest, you are surely going to need it. Have fun landing with the students, maybe you will learn something from them? I do not care.
  14. JWest - It is NOT SAFE to be doing a 720 from 2k+ ish ft to enter "your landing pattern" at 900ft. Doesn't sound much like a landing pattern to me. Please stop doing this. A 720 in the landing pattern will not be "fun" at all IF and WHEN you collide with another jumper. Your attitude scares me JWest and I know there are MANY others. This is DEADLY serious business and not a debate class. I'm tired of losing friends and don't really care what your "reasoned" answer is on this topic or anything else relating to skydiving. You should NOT be giving advise to ANYONE. Stop Turning I was trying to keep my post short. I will explain. C-182 max load five people. Two landing areas. I only do this when I am the only person landing in the "student" landing area and I have already counted the 4 other canopies that are landing in the 'experienced' landing area. If I can't find all 4 I would not do this. The landing areas are separated by a significant distance. If I spiral down I line it up so I get spit out right into my down wind leg. I would never do this if there was someone else landing in that area with me or I was at a different drop zone. That would be blatantly unsafe and irresponsible. I covered a two out scenario, and possible collisions. Besides getting spun up (PD Specter, probably won't happen) I can't think of any other issues with it. I have explained myself, if you still think that it is unsafe please inform me what I missed. If you have any questions ask. Try not to jump to a conclusion, I don't do anything without researching it first. I love the way you cite the work of a guy who has told you that you are an incident waiting to happen. His personal beliefs about me do not affect the helpfulness/content of his incident thread. My replies to you are in bold. If the only purpose of this thread That was not the original purpose, I was curious about the reasons behind the mentality towards low time jumpers with camera, Only about the last 1/4 was about the rest of your sentence. is to argue that there exists at least one person in the world who may be able to forget the camera after they turn it on, I don't think anyone would seriously disagree with that. Exactly, that is why I kept saying it over and over. I wanted to see if people would acknowledge that. Most did not. What they disagree with is that: (a) the general rule shouldn't change for that one person Agreed; (b) that person is qualified to self-identifyAgreed; or (c) you are likely that person. Agreed Now, you may say that you never made any of those claims --- I haven't followed this thread carefully enough to say otherwise. But the reaction you got I think was a result of two things: (1) the great majority of people who made the claims you're making (certainly everyone I can remember), made them either to: (a) advocate for lowering the C-license rule Recomendation, I don't think it should be lowered. It's a solid goal for some people to shoot for. It also encompasses more than just chucking yourself out of a plane. I just don't like seeing jumpers attracted over it. Chances are that their DZ is aware of it and has given them permission/talked about it. (Might be different on big DZ but that is not how it is at mine); or (b) claim that they were able to put a camera on their head and not let it distract them I have no comment because I do not know If I can do this in skydiving as I do with other activities.; and (2) there is little utility to the truth of your statement. Agreed, besides the social aspect I became interested in. I'm sure you would agree that we should not let students jump Velocities. YeP. Why? Because students aren't experienced enough to do so. I could point out that you can't categorically say that 100% of students are unable to handle a Velocity, and I'd bet quite a lot that there is at least one student in the world who could, but, so what? What utility does that true statement of exception have? None. So, if I were to make such a statement, most would assume that I was advocating a change in the rules, or, alternatively, that I should be allowed to do something I wasn't currently being allowed to do. Because why else would I make that statement? It became a social experiment, I wanted to see how people replied and their reasoning behind it. JWest - You land in the STUDENT LANDING AREA! OMG! LOL! That's certainly where you BELONG! You are a so called expert on skydiving videography but still land with the students? Hilarious! Dude stop with the advise and debate club. I am being blunt but this needs to end. Ignore DSE or the rest of us that have been around FAR longer and know way more than you at your own peril. Once again, I don't really care what your "reasoned" inexperienced answer is on anything relating to skydiving. You should NOT be giving advise or instruction to ANYONE. Are you deaf?
