Don't confuse one or two persons with an entire group. I've met Miles on a few occasions now and like him a lot. He's a genuinely upbeat, funny likable guy who I can tell has a good heart. That's the most important thing to me. Any "negativity" from me toward anyone has always been in relation to actions... not the person... with one or two very notable exceptions. If someone does something that I think is harmful to others or the sport, I'm going to speak up about it. But I don't really hold that against the person unless it's a consistent pattern of selfish, disrespectful behavior. I don't see that in Miles. Miles may be onto something combining physical challenge with the jump itself. I could see this manifesting itself in several ways. I've always thought combining a hardcore rock climb (like the spires out west) with a BASE jump was one of the future directions BASE would go. BASE Climb is also a good example of what I'm talking about here. Unfortunately, about the only thing around here someone could do on Miles' level would be 27+ 1000' tower climbs in one day. I don't see what's either newbie-ish or arrogant about it. Seem's pretty damn true in my experience as well. Most "normal" people don't understand. Hell, most skydivers don't understand. In my experience most are curious and see it as sort of neat... while simultaneously muttering how crazy you are. And more specifically to grundleson's point... I've seen many a whuffo relationship transform from "You BASE jump? Oooo that's so dangerous..." to "You gotta quite BASE jumping... it's so DANGEROUS." On a side note, I've reached the same point in my jumping career as Abbie and Nic. She's one of the original BASE pioneers and one of the nicest people on the face of the planet. I go through "de-motivational" periods as well. Fortunately my friends manage to drag my butt out so that generally the longest I go between jumps is maybe a couple of weeks. I've noticed a bit of a pattern. Most folks seem to go gangbusters for the first 50-60 jumps. Once that initial rush wears off you get into a more relaxed pattern. After trips folks seem to be more motivated (and current) and bust out more jumps than usual. After about 100 jumps I just reached a point to where running out somewhere and climbing a tower on a work night seemed more of a hassle than fun. And when something stops being fun, you need to change your habits so that it stays fun. Otherwise you just get burned out completely. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

I'm not particularly thrilled with the idea of cell phone towers in a national park... being that the idea is to preserve the natural beauty of the land, but opening them up to broader recreational use is definitely a step in the right direction. As a side note, I remember when I was up in Big Sky Montana and there was a lot of discussion about the NPS restricting snowmobiles in Yellowstone.
