But, let me recommend you do some (a lot) of tards off the P. Bridge before you try it off other stuff. I say that because I really do believe the probablility for off heading is more on the tard, at least when learning. Of courese, your mileage may vary, but I had one of the neatese, quickest, cleanest 180 openings on a tard at the bridge. Personal taste is always sour though I guess.
Hey, answer my email I sent you, unless you didn't get it.
Again, glad you came out ok. I recently had a 200 left opening on a similar tower, but 320feet high.
Good news: I missed the building, the tower, and the fence.
Bad news: I hit the tree.
Gooder news, I am ok but the canopy had to go to the repair hospital.
Be careful man, cause you is one of my fabvorite people [at least during the holidays :)] .
Gee, don't you people have any taller towers around there? I wouldn't jump those low ones :)

I was just joking about the TARD thing. I won't be trying that!
Glad to see you came out OK on your jump even if your canopy did not. My canopy has a few fabric stretches on the left stabilizer and 2 small cuts on the stabilizer near the slider stops. Overall it wasn't too bad.

  2. When I started BASE jumping the BASE prophets always said that if your in the sport long enough you'll eventually have an object strike and as much as I didn't want to believe this I knew deep down that it was true, one day I would be faced with hitting an object. Well, on Good Friday '04 that prophecy finally came true for me. It was a perfect day for jumping light winds warm temps and plenty of sunshine. Our group headed out to our local favorite 271ft "A" for an evening of jumping. The 4 of us reached the top about 7pm and proceeded to flick off. 3 freefalls and a PCA later everyone was 'big eyed and grinning'. 2 of us decided to make a second jump so we grabbed our gear and headed back up to do a 'roll-over'. Jumper one goes and has a 45 off heading to the left, now it's my turn for my 5th roll-over. I lower my canopy down and prepare to launch. There is a slight crosswind (2-3mph) from left to right, should be no problem. I check everything one last time and push off. As I'm rotating over my canopy I watch it turn slightly and I become almost mesmerized and transfixed. I watched it for too long and when the canopy sprung to life I was looking at it and not out in front of me. In the split second it took to look down from the canopy and get my bearings the parachute came alive and became very angry. It whipped open right back at the tower and I torked my body in the harness to try to keep it from going further left and grabbed for the steering lines, I looked at the tower and I knew it was going to be close and I actually thought to myself 'whew I'm going to make it' the all of a sudden my forward momentum ceases and I start to go backwards. I think 'oh shit, I clipped it'. The next thing I know I'm being slammed into the steel. On the second hit I'm able to grab something and hold on. I'm now at about 160ft with a sore ass and a canopy draped on the side of a tower[:/] I quickly call down to the ground and let them know I'm OK and proceed to get to a more secure location, and not hang from the rig anymore. I get out of my harness and climb up to release the canopy, by this time one friend is already half way up the tower and he grabs part of the canopy and begins to real it in. This whole process takes about 5 minutes and then we're climbing back down to the ground. What a strange feeling that is... jumping from a tower but never actually landing your parachute! I came out of this relatively unscathed; a few cuts and bruises. I'm a bit pissed at myself for watching the canopy for so long but you live and you learn I guess.... Next time I'll try the TARD insteadB|
So the BASE prophets are right again. I thought at one point in my career I might prove them wrong but alas in the end it is I that is wrong. It took me 487 jumps to fulfill their prophecy, when will you be faced with the inevitable???

    Stay safe,

there are some day sites to jump, and you dont have to be stealthy on all jumps...........

Just make sure you know which ones are and which ones aren't.;) We don't want any more sites to get hot around here, if you know what I mean.

Personally, I don't like having to climb my fat ass up anything, but you boys won't take me to an elevator yet...

    Ganja

Don't group me with those losers down there:P They haven't taken you because they don't jump anymore (well, at least sites that aren't within 1mile of there homes). They are just in it for the # and the fame that comes with it:D. Anyway you have to earn your altitude most of the time... so get used to it. I'll be in Chester next weekend doing some kick ass 4way so maybe we can get out and make a jump while I'm in the area.

  5. Make sure you check to see it the pegs go all the way to the top on the side you decide to climb. Some have pegs only up to a certain point then stop. I guess it's for working on the equipment. Also, getting around the dishes might be a bit tricky on those peg climbs if they are bolted on the leg[:/]

  6. I try to do about 2 a week/100 per year. I have been doing that for the last 3.5 years. Before that I was making 1 or less per week/20-50 per year. The first few years I only made a handfull, maybe 10. I have definitly picked up the pace from when I started and I guess it's because I'm more confident and there are more people to jump with around here. Plus, I know which objects are easier to get in and out of quickly and with little confrontation. Now after 7.5 years BASE jumping I'm inching closer and closer to the elusive 500 mark. I'm around 480 so I should be there by 4/20/04. Any suggestions on how to mark this milestone jump??
    WooHoo can't wait!!!B|

oh yeah, I'm in the same boat as you with close legal sites(none)... I'm in the state directly North of you.

  7. Dear Ray and Spence,
while I do agree that my monkey did have an attitude problem and he didn't much like being told what to do, I will have to say that his untimely demise is because of the lack of supervision you had for your students. You can clearly see in that picture that was taken just a few moments before his last jump that he was not in his right frame of monkey mind. Look into his eyes what do you see? Not the fun loving monkey we all love but rather a lifeless gaze. You may not know what was on his mind but I do. These are his words in a letter to me written the day he died: "Eeeeak eeeak oooh ooh, ooooh eeak eeeeeeeeeaaaakkkk". You should be ashamed and apologetic for your other students behavior. This is truly horrible and no-one should ever be tortured like this. I know monkey jokes are funny but this was taking it too far.
I do apologize for the torn up gear, I think he was just reaching out for help.:(

I expect to be fully compensated for my loss of course. A fair settlement will be...
    1. An apology from the 3 individuals who perpetrated this horrible act that drove him to take the drugs before he jumped and killed himself.
    2. A name change for your company to include an asterisk * after the term "Bounce Proof" indicating "except mentally tortured, drug taking monkeys"
    3. $50 US (not Canadian) to cover half the cost of the cool monkey skull drinking cup and bone sculpture I'm having made from his remains
    4. 2 free slots at an upcoming Ray and Spence Bounce Proof* BASE Course.

If you will agree to these terms we can settle out of court.
    Thanks for your time,

You stated that you'll take man, woman or child for your course, while I think this is a good policy you are alienating a much larger clientel. I have a pet monkey that was really looking forward to attending your course until he read that satement, now he's just huddled in a corner flinging crap[:/] I emplore you to reconsider your strict requirements for acceptance and make my monkey happy:)Do you offer group discounts? As I would also like to be considered for your course if your no-monkey rules are changed.

  • What up Tree???
It's really very easy to keep track of all that stuff. I have my info in an Access Database. All I do is fill in the blanks or choose from a preset list after each jump and then I can sort them any way I want. It's nice but it's not for everyone. I like numbers, stats etc.

You guys making any road trips soon?

  • I had about 800 skydives before I made a BASE jump. 300 of them being on a big 7 cell pegasus. I really think that people who start BASE jumping with only a few hundred skydives, and most of them on a fast 9 cell, are just an accident waiting to happen. It looks like "Being COOL" has taken precedence over "being safe" and gaining as much experience as possible to save your ass when the time comes.

For me, I care way too much about myself and my personal safety to go into such a dangerous sport unprepared... Shame on those who don't!>:( Plan on becoming an OLD BASE jumper not just a jumper.

  • Slider up will be harder on your lines than on the parachute itself. The slider zooming domn the lines will heat them up thus over time causing distortion of the lines and this distortion of the lines causes your canopy to come out of trim. I believe that slider down jumps are harder on the actual stitching on the parachute and not the lines. Just a thought though:P
As far as telling a perspective buyer how many jumps are on a canopy, the seller should tell them exactly how many jumps are on them. The buyers life might depend on it. Not only is it a good idea to keep track of jumps on a canopy for potential resale, it's a good idea to keep track for your own personal benefit. I know exactly how many jumps are on each of my 3 rigs, I can also tell you how many of the jumps were slider up or down, I even know how many jumps each PC has so after so many jumps I can start to think about getting a new one and keeping a record also helps me to determine if certain PC's are a factor in heading performance.
I think record keeping is a smart thing and I think honesty when selling gear is a smart thing. Unfortunatly we cannot rely on others to keep detailed records so as others have said a visual inspection will tell the tale that the seller won't.

PS-I would even tell a perspective buyer (if they inquired)which harness had my naked ass hanging from it, just in case they were some sort of homophobe :o and couln't handle the thought of touching the same stuff as another naked man!! Ha.

  • Aren't those guys a little on the CRAZY side to be instructing people how to BASE jump? And from what I remember about them is that most of them just started BASE jumping and skydiving just recently and they were making a lot of common mistakes and letting their "enthusiasm" get the best of them. Are you sure you want to trust your life to 'newbies' in the sport? Especially when you only have 60 or so skydives?? Are you sure they have your BEST INTEREST in mind? I'm thinking that you being 'in love' might be clouding your vision. :S
Don't get me wrong, I think those guys are a lot of fun and I had a great time meeting them hanging out, I just don't think they are ready to be teaching BASE yet. Just my opinion... take it for what it's worth.

PS how did Selwyn "lose" his canopy? I thought I lost my canopy once but then I remembered that the MAN had taken it [:/]

  • Just wanted to congratulate BASE 652 for reaching his goal a few weeks ago... 1,000 BASE jumps is impressive, no doubt.(even if most are from the same object) ;)
As soon as this wind dies down we'll go and add a few more to your total. Hmm let's see should it be the "B" or that new short "A" or just those darn 2000 footers again?? Decisions... Decisions.

  • Just wondering why this was moved from "Events and gatherings" to "talk back"??? I thought this forum was for Non-skydiving related stuff, bitching, complaining etc.
I'm pretty sure this was a skydiving event and a gathering. A pretty cool event at that!!! One that will never happen again. Thanks Orville and Wilbur Wright... without your determination we(skydivers) would not be where we are now... jumping out of your creations!

  • Thanks for the update Jimmy. I had gotten a few emails from Judy but hadn't heard anything in the past few days. Lisa called the hopital a few times but they would not tell her any new updates. Flowers have been on standby till he got out of ICU but will go out on Monday.

After the incident I didn't have an opportunity to thank everyone who pitched in and helped a brother in trouble. So, thank you:)).

    BASE jumper's death revives debate
    By Sandy Miller
    Times-News writer

Roberts, who has been parachuting for 30 years and says he was one of the first to BASE jump off the Perrine Bridge in 1989, said Twin Falls and Jerome counties would be wise to sit up and take notice from officials in Fayetteville.

"These guys around here are being blind in one eye about this," Roberts said. "Sure, it draws in revenue, but what about a lawsuit?"

Sounds like one of our own is turning on us...

Thank god he is here to make our sport more safe:S I guess he just gets afraid when people actually LIVE 'their' lives and their dreams instead of someone else's. Mr. Stout, No-one can bring back your son no matter how many people you sue or blame, can't you see that?? People like you are the reason we (US Citizens) have lost so many of our freedoms already. >:(>:(>:(

I've given some more thought to the possibility, and am realizing a few things. Zaz can land his VX 68 with weights straight in and I can match his flight. This is because a canopy can be flared. Awhile ago, I started working on "flaring" the wingsuit as much like a canopy as I could...

Have you tried flaring next to Zaz while he is flaring up high?? This might give you a good reference to go by.

  • Hello brothers and sisters...
Experienced BASE jumper looking for contacts out west. After being away for over 3 years I'm going back out west to explore and was looking for some jumpers to play with while I'm traveling. My travel dates are 10/28 to 12/4. I'll be flying in and out of Vegas and will most likely stay within these boundaries (of course I might be persuaded otherwise)...West-Vegas; North-SLC; East-CO and NM western parts; and maybe as far South as Sedona, AZ. I'll also be in Moab for the Turkey Day festivities. Anyone want to get together for a few jumps?? For those of you who already know me and might know some contacts in these areas who don't read this board please forward my email address and experience level to them so we can get in touch.
    Thanks for everyones help.
