  1. I think he is dealing with a P 206. We covered this a couple of months ago. A fabric door can be made for the forward door in a P206 like the U206 door. Velcro, Cordura, Sewing Machine. 100 ways to build it, 50 ways to do it wrong. Just build it, test fly it, modify it, keep it maintained.
  2. The cabin is still holding its shape. Thats impressive. Cessnas are usually 2 foot high after an impact like that.
  3. Your auto gas prices may have dropped $.50 at the time but the avgas prices pretty much just kept climbing. Avgas and Jet A are now usually $1.50 more than your high auto gas price.
  4. {I believe Van Pray Jr. had an event like this at his DZ in Missouri. I know it was in the plans but not sure if it ever happened. } We have the shooting range on one side of the landing area. It seems that first they jump, jump, jump and then start blasting after jumpings done. Talked about having the event but as we are skydivers it was mostly talk and didnt happen.
  5. The cargo door looks great but the cut out is Aft of the normal door and puts more weight aft at climb out. King Airs dont need the CG farther aft. The pilot will have to keep a higher airspeed for climb out and jump run. King Airs dont need faster jump runs.
  6. A King Air 90 sitting in the hanger will have a higher cost (risk / money) than one thats flying. Pilots have to stay proficient like the Porter, the aircrafts cash flow = money for maint, mechanics also have to stay in a flow on the aircraft. Farming it out to events sets up more problems with this type of aircraft. When jumpers are excited and unfamilar you have to have a pilot like Mullins who has seen it all to reduce the risk. Whats the cost per seat? Kind of a gamble. Do you feel lucky?
  7. Looks like Joes plane, Took a while but that tail strike cost him his life.
  8. Low acquisition cost can short turn around times make the king air attractive. You could sell the Porter and buy 2 King Airs. When I flew King Air 90s for skydiving I averaged 30-33 slots per flight hour. Pick an aircraft already converted to hydraulic gear from the chain drive. I did gear swings and phased rebuilding sections of the landing gear and flaps every 75 hours. At the time the 91.407f aircraft inspections were 150 hours apart. If you own the airplane, fly the airplane, maintain the plane and don’t have to run the day to day ops of a 4-5 day a week DZ, it wouldn’t be a bad choice. The gear and flaps were not designed to handle the number of cycles we want to put on them and so increased maintenance is required there. Many DZs have had success with King Airs but they have a history of greater risk, landing gear failures, pilot failures, mechanic failures, tail strikes and all come at high cost. The Porter should be worth more in 10 years than an old King Air. I think the Porter engine upgrade requires that the operator have the engine in TBO in which the engine would cost what a used King Air 90 would. My PT6-20 206 should have the same purchase cost of the KA90 with a max of 24 head per flight hour. Not bigger and sexy but much lower risk because of the simple airframe and derated engine. I am hoping that it would be a good complement to an established Porter or Twin Otter DZ. The increase in Maintenance would be less than a King Air and the -20 spares would cross over to a -20 Porter, also a pilot training aircraft for upgrade to the Porter. Sorry to turn this into a sales pitch.
  9. Moving fwd slooooowwwwwlllllyyyy.
  10. Im not sure why he would have to remove the wing tips from the 195. . Ive seen the aircraft on Youtube and noticed that. By removing the lenght of wing he could have gained a higher manuvering speed so the aircraft could cruise at a higher speed. We wont have any limitations on wing extensions and infact will recomend the Flint extensions that will give a gross weight increase of 200lbs. Carved foam shape is covered in fiberglass and we are now bondoing the plug smooth. After cutting off the plug it will be time for the torque and gust load pull test on engine mount / firewall installation.
  11. This case here. $10,000 for 21 guys, 4 hours = $119 per person per hour. I know that there must have been a big red truck involed but Im going to have to start charging more money or get into the "pulling people out of tree busniess". If the agencies broke the bill down better, Charged for the truck call out and a fair rate for the 3 or 4 guys instead of 21. I wouldnt have such a knee jerk reaction. If I was the city manager and 21 guys put in a bill for that Id freak out.
  12. Foam, Carving, stand back and look at it, more foam, carving, looking. It takes time. The 206 is rounder than a Porter so getting the shape right is taking time. Still going forward.
  13. Skydive Flying V Ranch in Missouri. Started jumping here in March 2010.
  14. She lets me do most of the fun stuff. She will like the climb with 6 jumpers in it.
  15. With the fuselage reinforcement and engineering we are increasing it to 450 continuous hp.
  16. No big visual progress to display yet. All the little stuff is moving forward. Should have something soon to show off.
  17. Is this guy a jumper? This isnt an aerobatic airplane and sounds like he was on a xcountry in the aircraft. He has a lot of explaining to do. Bizarre Bailout Story By Glenn Pew, Contributing Editor, Video Editor Barrington Slack, a private pilot, was reportedly alone in a single-engine 1976 Rockwell International 112TC Commander flying over Burke County, Georgia, when he departed the aircraft and landed safely under canopy. The aircraft impacted near a cow pasture and was destroyed. One witness who estimated he was about 400 yards from the crash site saw the aircraft come down and said the impact, "was like a bomb went off." A local ABC news affiliate reported that a police report "said Slack tried to get the plane’s rudder to work but didn’t have much luck. And a little after 7, the plane ran out of fuel and crashed." The Augusta Chronicle reported that Slack told authorities he'd departed Covington at about 4 p.m. for Columbia, S.C.. The cities are about 175 miles apart and the crash site is roughly between the two but off track to the south. After landing safely with his parachute, Slack reportedly hitched a ride back to the crash site, where he apparently spoke with early responders, refused medical attention and left. The Augusta Chronicle reported that the wrecked aircraft is registered to Kalunju Aviation Group of Atlanta, and the Georgia Secretary of State's Web site lists Slack as that company's agent.
  18. I think the time it took for the Load master to hook up an additional parachute to the S/L (that is suposed to come off the main/jumper) adds to much risk to the aircraft and load masters. The main could have deployed at any time and the S/L would have torn out the structure of the aircraft (more than likely injuring the load master on its way out) It appears that the S/L wrapped around the container before or on exit causing the jumper in tow, one hand on the helmet would have been enough for me to cut him away. He would have got his first free fall wings.
  19. You will have to worry about burning out your IA. The airplanes can be replaced easier. Now with my Tiger 206 he may have to go part time.
  20. Cessna has some internal hat structure that runs diagonally. You see the external reinforcement, it attaches the the internal hat structure, that attaches to the cabin box. This is a lot more than the Soloy at 420hp. Can anyone tell me how the airframe holds up to the to skydiving hours with the Soloy?
  21. better photo showing fire wall reinforcements.
  22. King air 90 prop. 9 inch shorter dia than the Otter. Same hub and blades
  23. Engine on, a long way to go. should have better pics of it out in the sun after we get the nose wheel tire on.
  24. DER has the drawings and it should hold a target 450hp max continous power. Engine mount powder coated, all fuselage reinforcements riveted in place. Large nose gear fork reinstalled and waiting on my 6.00X6 tire and wheel to arrive. Engine will be hung begining of next week. Pictures to follow. I have the next set of fuselage attach fittings ready and second engine mount coming out the the jig. Are you next?
